Savannah with 13-year-old boy
It's been years since I've been to Savannah, but it looks like it might be a nice place to stop with my 13-year-old boy on the way back to Fl. Any ideas on what to do? He will be ok with a couple historical houses/museums, but I will need some outdoor stuff. What about forts/kayaking/active things? Also, what about a motel? Is there anything reasonable near the old section? And places to eat - any barbecue or southern cooking? Doesn't Paula Deen have her restaurant there?

would he be interested in the Historical Forts? Fort Jackson was constructed for the war of 1812. Fort Pulaski is a huge place that dates back just before the Civil War.
He might like the Ships of the Sea Museum too. Take him to Tybee, after you see Fort Pulaski and let him climb up the lighthouse. There is also kayaking from Tybee.

Is the Riverwalk the old warehouse area? Do you have a name for the riverboat company? What about a place to stay? I'm thinking basic hotel with a 13-year-old boy, but I would like to be able to walk places so I would consider B&B.

Hampton Inn at Bay and Abercorn.
Hand him a guide book and let him plan some things he is interested in.
I did this with a 10 year old boy and he designed a very unique trip. We visited places I had no idea were in the state!
Just Savannah? How about taking the ferry out to Cumberland Island for the day (from St. Mary's GA) and stopping in Jekyll Island for a night? Do the kayak trip in the marsh offered by the Outdoor Education Center.
Read P_M's report on Savannah.

I read P_M's report just after I posted this - and asked some questions there. I would love to spend more time, but this is the return of the taking-my-oldest-to-college trip (you gave me some info about Moultrie and Dixie)and the "quick trip" has already grown to over a week. We used to go to Sea Island every year for Thanksgiving and I always wanted to go to Cumberland Island, but we never had enough time. Someday!
