I will have 4 or 5 days and wonder how to split it between these 2 cities at Christmas. I'm also wondering in which city I should actually spend Christmas day.
Any ideas or thoughts?

The majority of posters here would vote for Charleston. More quaint--walkable.
And then there are some of us who would choose Savannah
You aren't going to get "one right answer" on this board. Ever. Both cities are beautiful during the holidays. Both offer wonderful walking tours. Both cities have churches with lovely services. Both have horse-drawn carriage rides. Both have waterfronts. Both have beaches nearby for a walk on the beach.
Those are the things I would do at this time of year. You can't go wrong wtih either location.
Are you bringing the pups?
Now wouldn't the pups just love to go with mommy! But alas, they are more comfortable at home....especially Kodi who gets a bit confused these days.
I've been to both cities...Savannah a couple of times and I love it. I've only been to Charleston for a couple of hours ( I took a quick tour while passing through on my way to Florida). So I didn't see much of it. SO there would be more new things for me there.
I suppose I wonder which will have much , if anything , going on right on Christmas day.
Carriage ride sounds good, but not alone. I'd have to grab a guy off the street!!!

I would pick Savannah also, although I really like Charleston too.
If you have 4 or 5 days I would spend 2 in Savannah and 3 in Charleston since you haven't stayed there. I don't think that either city will be really 'lively' on Christmas day though.
I have always heard that Charleston and Savannah are sister cities, with Charlestion being the prim and proper one and Savannah being the not so proper 'insert word here I am not going to type' sister.

Hey cgenster! We are well--thinking about CR--we've been doing a lot of sailing on the SF Bay and would love to charter a boat down there--row to classes at CPI??? Cheers to you and Mr. genster!
I like both, but I'd think this would be an easy decision since you haven't really been to Charleston yet.
We were in Charleston at the Harbourview Inn for Christmas last year, and it was lovely. We went to Magnolia Plantation on Christmas Day, and ate our dinner at Magnolia's, a short walk from the hotel. We walked to a beautiful Christmas eve midnight service at the Episcopal church ... awesome! Love Savannah, but haven't visited at Christmas. I would do 3 days Charleston, 2 Savannah ... Christmas at either would be superb, I'm sure!

As someone who has lived halfway between the 2 cities for over 30 years, I would definitely choose Charleston as my preference for Christmas Day, although I've never actually been there on Christmas Day. Elsiemoo's suggestions sound wonderful, and the Harborview Inn is well located. If you call the concierge there, I'm sure she/he could give you some suggestions as far as what options are available on a "to do " list. Just walking around the city, exploring all the neighborhoods, and meeting the friendly locals are serendipitous ideas! Be sure to notice the Christmas decorations on the old homes and the quaint gardens. Have fun!
