Savannah hotel locale
Thinking about going to savannah and Charleston in April. Is there an area that is preferable for hotel stays in Savannah? Are you better off by the river? Looking for upscale and a great location. Thank you!

Hi emcash,
I think the downtown peninsula in Charleston (south of Calhoun) and Historic District for Savannah is what you're looking for. I stayed at the Vendue Inn in Charleston--the location could not have been better (not sure if this is upscale enough, even though it felt more upscale than what I usually do).
Best wishes, D. Williams

Savannah is a strange city - but similar to some other small southern cities. There is a very short distance between the nice tourist area and gritty crime and gang areas.
Historic District, anything near the River is good.
For those who might find this thread on a search - an area that is also safe, certainly not upscale, but more affordable, is called Midtown. It is not in-town or mid to anything. In fact, it is a mile or so of highway with every chain restaurant and hotel you could ever imagine. Not scenic, and very generic. A few miles from Historic District, so you need a car. But more affordable.

Here's my review of our recent stay at the Cotton Sail Hotel in Savannah. The locations was excellent:

Probably the most upscale hotels would be the Andaz, Cotton Sail, Hyatt and Brice hotels. Also on Bay St. - the Doubletree, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites and Hampton Inn at Bay and Abercorn. All are nice and in great location. Around the corner a bit is the Planter's Inn on Reynolds Square. It's next door to the Pink House (my favorite restaurant in the city) and in the basement is the historic tavern - with grand piano and a big fire in the fireplace. Any of the above are in easy walking distance to anything in the HD and a block (or less) from River Street.
I've stayed in all but the new(er) Cotton Sail and Brice. There is a Westin across the river and you can take the free water taxi over to River Street. I stayed in it when it was brand new. I assumed they've updated it since then.
Savannah is beautiful in April. If your dates are flexible, you may want to go the first week in April during the famous home and garden tour dates -

Sorry, it seems that those two links I provided will just take you to the general review page for each hotel, emcash. If you want to find my reviews specifically, go to reviews from March-May (we were there in May) and look for mine. My name there is hdm13.
The Cotton Sail title is "Could be Great but Needs Work"
The Meeting Street Inn title is "Lovely Place, Wonderful Staff".
