Saranac Lake, NY Help needed....

Hi there...I am trying to make some last minute lodging decisions for the end of July-early August 2008 for Saranac Lake, NY area and have never been here before, (we are from Michigan)...anyone familiar with the area and Lake Flower in particular and the Village of Saranac Lake please help us out?? We are looking at a small rental apartment in the Village(Saranac) on Lake Flower....she said walking distance to the shops and restaurants. We have three small kids under seven years old, does anyone know if this would be a good spot for us?? It is directly on Lake Flower but from what the owner said, not on the busy highway side of the lake??? any help is much appreciated so much!!!

You're in luck!
Randomly checking this post even though I live in Boston now...
I grew up in Plattsburgh (about an hour away from Saranac Lake)...have been there many times as I was an avid skiier. Curious...are you going to Lake Placid at all? I HIGHLY recommend it! It's beautiful there...
I am not sure of the specific location of Lake Flower, I know I've been there. But if it's "off the main highway" it means it's just a bit more remote. Very safe area, to be completey honest, not much of a "walking to shopping" type of area. That's more Lake Placid.

Thank you SO much for the response about the area and it being safe. We will be in Lake Placid for four nights prior to Saranac Lake, staying at the Golden Arrow Resort on Mirror Lake. We have never been to the Adirondacks and are really looking forward to it. Our family (cousin) has a place in the Fingerlake region so will be starting our vacation there and then heading over with them to Lake Placid. The spot the owner is talking about, she said is across the lake from the main "highway" but she said still walking distance to the little village of Saranac Lake. Hard to find lodging in this area for less than a week so I think that I should grab it?@!

My husband and I stayed at the Golden Arrow when we first stayed in Lake Placid. It is a very nice resort, however it is on top of a hill, so if you want to walk to town it can be a little bit of a hike. If money is no object I would look into the MIrror Lake Inn. We have never personally stayed there (have had dinner in their main dining room only) but it is beautiful.

Another place you may want to look into is the Hilton. We stayed there the last time we were in Lake Placid (a few years ago) and the location is great. You walk out and you are right on the main st. Definitely check out the Brown Dog Cafe and Wine Bar. - Susan

Thanks a lot Scarlett, saw that post too on here...eveyone must be thinking Lk. Placid area lately, the difference being that we have three kids under seven so their idea of a good place to stay is most likely TOTALLY different than our choices, LOL!! We are excited though. The Hilton for us, I think would not give us that true Adirondack Lodge/Camp/Family feeling we are looking for but thank you so much everyone for all of the responses so far.......

You know, when I posted that for you, I was thinking your question was similar to that one, so I thought I was sending you different answers.
Forgive me, I am growing senile by the minute
