Sante Fe - Art & Architecture & More?

Fodors Friends,

I expect to be in Sante Fe after Christmas
for the first time. I've gathered information from previous post. Of course the streets and galleries will be a delight.
I haven't noticed any walking tours per se. Anyone have any advice, I have an arch. design background. Small private tour would be nice or is it unheard of in SF?

Does anything specifically close in the winter? Is New Years Day quiet, would it be a good day to go to Bandolier? Any special gathering in the plaza for New Years Eve.

I have only glanced over maps so far. Georgia O'Keefe Museum and Lunch sounds like a nice day trip. Bandolier NP, Chimayo and Taos.

Currently considering 2 night in Taos, 4 SF.
Is it an easy commute to ABQ early in the morning or is it better to stay in Albuquerque for early flight. Is there a route from ABQ to Taos...I can answer probably when I get more into detail on the map.

Thanks for all who have posted before and in the future.

Sylvia,

I'll be in Sante Fe too! I look forward to the responses primarily about New Years.

I can only give you general answers, but since nobody else has responded, I'm better than nothing!

Santa Fe has every tourist service imaginable, especially those on the upper end, money-wise, so I'm sure there are small private tours available. If you know where you're staying, the concierge or manager should be able to give suggestions.

Same answer for New Year's Eve festivities - I'm sure there will be something! And while it may be quiet on New Year's Day, I can't imagine that everything will be closed.

On a recent trip to Santa Fe, we visited the Folk Art museum. It was amazing, and I could have spent many hours there looking at all the displays.

Re Taos, I like Taos a lot, but there's not a huge amount to do there; you might find 2 nights is one night too much. On the other hand, if you spend the day at (for example) Bandolier, then arrive at Taos in the evening, and spend the next full day, that might be just right.

You've heard, I bet, all about the high road to Taos. It is a beautiful drive. But if you're interested in Pueblo pottery, particularly Santa Clara, take the other route to Taos (via the highway), that will take you by Santa Clara. You can buy pottery there directly from the artists (or their families), at better prices than anywhere in Santa Fe or Taos.

I don't know how far it is to Albuequerque from Taos, but it's about an hour from Taos to Santa Fe, so I wouldn't want to try an early-morning flight from Taos.

You might also enjoy touring Georgia
O'Keeffe's home at Abiquiu - well worth it if you are a fan of her's. You need to make reservations ahead of time.

Lexma90 & Sue,

Thanks for your note on the Santa Clara pottery, weather permitting Bandelier, cliff dwelling, the high Road to Taos and return via Santa Clara. I also want to take in Chimayo for the weaving. I noticed someone else had said the folk art museum was one of their favorites.

Georgia O'Keefe is on the list. I really have to get a detailed map of the area and see what daytrips are possible.

Thanks for your thoughts! Sylvia
