Santa Monica Questions

I am nearing completion on first trip west with my family. We are planning to stay at Santa Monica beach area for the few nights we are on the coast. I read last night that the ocean water is so polluted at Santa Monica that few venture in to it. We enjoy ocean swimming. Is this true???
