Santa Fe/Taos: # of days 4 1st timer
Hello:
We are looking at planning at trip to Santa Fe and Taos in early May. We've never been before. We live in Northern California so it's a fairly easy trip. I was thinking of 3 nights in Santa Fe and 1 night in Taos. What do you think? How far is Taos from Santa Fe? We are interested in the culture (hanging out in town, etc.), art, good food, and some sight seeing. Just curious as to your thoughts. We are thinking of staying at the Inn on the Anazzi in Santa Fe but not sure where to stay in Taos.
Appreciate any input!

That's a good amount of time. You could stay longer if you like to hike, etc. but this will give you a good look at the culture and shopping and scenery. In the summertime there is chamber music and opera, too - and heat! May should be really lovely.

3 nights in Santa Fe and 1 in Taos should be about right. I might suggest 1 night in Albuquerque in lieu of 1 of the SF nights.
There is a lot to do and a lot on the boards with recommendations on places to stay, vrbo's, restaurants, activities etc.
Type in Santa Fe and Taos in the search box above. Click on my name for lots of info.
I recently listed some nice vrbo's in Santa Fe. In Taos, the http://www.adobepines.com/ is a favorite.
Also click on the destinations link above and see what Fodor's has to say - they have great ideas.

Personally I would spend 2 or 3 nights in Taos instead of Santa Fe. It all depends what interests you. Santa Fe is about galleries, shopping, upscale restaurants. Taos is about outdoor activities, hiking, cycling and rafing, and small cafes (yes there are galleries and shopping too, but not on the same scale as Santa Fe).

Thanks everyone! Great input. I think we will make Taos a day trip. I'm sure we will want to return and spend more time there. However, this will minimize the packing and unpacking and give a chance to see it all. We may opt for a night in Albuquerque which would allow us to see that area and be closer to the airport for our departure. I will post a trip report when we return (probably late May).
Many thanks!
Many thanks!
