Santa Fe and Taos in February

My husband and I are planning to take a long weekend trip in February and are looking at going to Santa Fe (2 nights) and Taos (1 night).

We are interested in taking scenic drives and getting out of into the country, but are worried about the snow and travel conditions. Will be we able to do the scenic drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe in February? Will we be able to do the high pass scenic drive from Santa Fe to Taos in February? How cold should it be up in the mountians?

Note, we will not be skiing (I'll be about 6 months pregnant). We will also spend some time in the shops and museums. But the highlight for us will probably be getting out to see the mountains and snow (there's not much of that here in Dallas).

Thanks so much for your time in responding!

Maybe; maybe; cold.

The east side of the Sandias gets the most snow, so check weather conditions before you attempt the Turquoise Trail. Ditto for the high road to Taos. We did the latter in February 2007, and all roads were clear, but there was a good amount of snow along the way.

Ditto what Elendilpickle said.
I'm in Taos now and the road conditions are fine but you really can't predict that far ahead.

The high road may be iffy that time of year. We couldn't take the mountain pass driving in as it was icy in many areas.

We're driving the Enchanted Circle today as we've heard it's a very scenic drive. I'll let you know what we think!

We just got back from Santa Fe and Taos yesterday. We took the High Road to Taos and had no problems.

Just be careful when taking back roads- they don't do a great job of plowing. We wound up getting stuck and needed somebody to pull us out.

It was pretty cold, especially when the sun goes down.

In case you're planning to visit Taos Pueblo, it closes in midwinter for a month or so. Check their website for dates. It was closed when we were there.

As has already been written, winter in SF and Taos is winter. It is chageable. It can be great one day and horrible the next, or even later in the same day.

You will really need to play it by ear and decide on a day to day basis, being sure to check current weather forcast and road conditions.

Yes, it will be cold, especially at night. Hat, gloves, scarf cold.

We were just in Santa Fe this week for 4 days and will be writing a mini trip report soon. L@@k for it as I will have some good restaurant reviews.
