We enjoyed staying at the Old Santa Fe Inn. It's a bit more moderately priced than many of the other places nearby. The location is excellent. Our room was small but tastefully furnished and well equipped.

There is much more to Santa Fe than the plaza, so staying right near it isn't mandatory.
If they are looking to save a few dollars, have a car and don't mind a short drive - staying on Cerrillos Road.
There are no guarantees with Priceline, and Hilton is now 3.5 *

Hotwire had Villas de Santa Fe (3 blocks from Plaza) fully equipped condos for ~$80 for September. (Had to do a little detective work to figure out the place, but it worked for me.)

I haven't ever seen those sylvia, they look very nice. I think I have walked past them and thought they were condos. If they are the ones I am thinking of, they are in a decent location as we often park on the street near them.
There is a note that there will renovations on 35 units from end of October until mid December, as an fyi.

A few years ago, my wife and I stayed at the Water Street Inn. You can walk to the plaza, but I agree with some of the earlier posts, this is over rated. When we booked 4-5 years ago, prices were about $100/nt and included a very good breakfast. No idea on the prices now. I briefly looked at their web site and it looks like its changed names, but you can still get to it at www.waterstreetinn.com

Old Santa Fe worked for us. Good breakfast spread (included) too. Right across from the Capitol and centrally located (although Santa Fe is not a metropolis by any means).

Thank you all for your recommendations. We will have a car since we are flying to Albuquerque and don't mind a drive. We would like comfortable acommodations that are luxurious but not over the top. We are celebrating our fourth anniversary and it is the first time in Santa Fe for my husband.

If you can get a room in your price range, Hotel Santa Fe is a nice choice. They have free shuttle to plaza, is also walkable to Plaza and to Railyard. It is the only Native American owned hotel in Santa and has a very authentic feel to it. They have a wonderful flutist, Ronald Roybal, who performs a few evenings a week for free in the lounge area, and he is wonderful.
They also have a section that is a bit more upscale and a spa on site.

We loved the Inn of the Anasazi. It totally fits your luxurious but not over the top description. We stayed there for our anniversary. Really charming and great service, and an excellent location near the Plaza.
