I took advantage of the JetBlue sale on Dec. 12 to get a $24 total roundtrip ticket for SEA-LGB, and I'm taking a long weekend in early February.
I'm considering going to Santa Catalina, and maybe even overnighting, Feb. 3 or 4, but I've read of people getting stuck there for days because of weather. That would not be a good outcome in my situation, given my return flight and work requirements. How likely is this bad weather to happen?
Is it worth going - would other parks on the mainland be just as good?
Santa Catalina in the winter - weather, getting stuck on island?

Were you planning on going by boat or helicopter? Helicopter pilots can refuse to fly if they consider the weather to be too dangerous. A boat may be safer if the seas are not too rough.
Why not try for Death Valley NP, Mojave National Preserve or Joshua Tree NP?
Check the weather just before you depart. Unless the seas are really up - think the ferries should be running over to Santa Catalina, which is cool place to visit.

I was planning on going by boat. I think the price of the helicopter would be too much. I regret I didn't know about the birthday promotion - I might have moved my trip a few days to make that
.
Tomsd, if the weather forecasts are fairly reliable, then I don't mind relying on that. I guess I would like to have an idea of how common really long delays are.
I am not sure about going to those other parks - might save them for when I'm visiting further east in the desert.
I ended up being busy otherwise, and did not do this. I did notice some canceled sailings in January, which made me a bit nervous anyway. However, maybe I'll try again sometime on a longer trip and schedule it around my birthday!
