Sanibel Island day trip - bike rentals?

My husband and I will be staying in Naples with my parents for a few days in February. We are planning a day trip to Sanibel Island. I would like to avoid having a car on the island (I have heard the traffic has grown exponentially since my family used to go there when I was a kid).

Are there options to park before getting on the island (or soon after) and rent bikes?

You need to drive onto Sanibel before renting the bikes...

Billy's bike rentals is on the main route, Periwinkle way... Drive there and leave the car while you tour the bikepaths...

Sorry, but I'm trying to understand why riding a bike in heavy traffic is better than a car. Seems more dangerous to me.

Sanibel is designed with several Off Road bike and walking trails... once you rent, you are not in traffic...

Interesting.

The Naples Boys. (myself and NeoPatrick) both had the same reaction.

I would as soon ride down I-77 on a bicycle as Periwinkle Way, but with garyt22's prompting I remember the streets that parallel the Main Drag and the bike path out near Ding Darling and the high school. If there are others, they might be an interesting way to get around.

It's worth my taking another look at the map. I can still learn!

gary, perhaps you have a point, but I've been to Sanibel many, many times and those bike paths parallel the busy main road and cross it many times. And wouldn't you want to bike to the shops, galleries, and restaurants? How do you do that without meeting the very traffic you're trying to avoid? Frankly, for safety sake, I still prefer the safety of a car around me rather than the exposure on an open bike, especially when competing with aging, gawking tourists in their cars.

I can see the joy of riding a bike rather than a car in Ding Darling so long as it's not a "dusty day" stirred up by all the cars.

PS... there are now 25 miles of paved bike trails on Sanibel separated from the road...

We bike on Sanibel almost every year. Our intention isn't to avoid traffic but to enjoy the outdoors and the activity. The bikeways are paved, well maintained and often go through more attractive areas than cars. Crossing intersections is not too dicey and the speed limit is only 25 in the busy areas. Most drivers are aware of bikers but you should always pay close attention to traffic when crossing. I second the recommendation of Billy's Bikes.
