Sanibel Island
We are staying at Buttonwood Cottages on Sanibel Island in late April and I am wondering if we will need a car to get around. I understand traffic is terrible and I would like to know if we can get around via biking and walking? Is there anything else we should know about the island before our trip?

I only visited the island once, and didn't spend the night, but here's my 2¢ worth...
If you are in good shape, a bike (and your feet) should be sufficient to get around. There are no hills, and it is only a few miles long.
As you may know, Sanibel is one of the best spots in the country for shelling, if that is of interest to you. Go out early in the morning, because the scores of other people out there will pick up all the shells, otherwise. Bring something to put them in -- a net bag, like one used for laundry, is ideal. There is a (State?) park at the southern-most tip of the island that provides one of the best places to stroll and collect.
Have fun!

I agree that biking is OK, but a car is good too - especially if you are shopping. Traffic is not terrible -- it is just that there are not many roads. It gets busy on the roads during the dinner hour and weekends. There are some great restaurants including, The Hungry Heron and Matzaluna, Jacaranda's. I am not sure if you will want to be biking to dinner.
Also, if you are shelling, bring a pair of water shoes or pick up a pair there. Get a bag with tiny holes, otherwise you will lose any of your tiny shells. Watch the tide schedule for the best shelling. Have fun!

Yes you will need a car. Yes the traffic is "terrible" on the main road, Periwinkle Way but that is not the only road. You can rent bikes, but as the other person said, do you want to go to dinner on a bike? Also, it may rain, god forbid. Take or rent a car, have a good time, enjoy the food, sun, and shell museum.
