I'm trying to plan a vacation to Florida in July (yes, I know it will be hot...it's the only time to go in the summer with baseball tournaments throughout June) for my family (including husband & 2 sons, ages 8 & 13). I had it all planned out...flying Southwest to Fort Myers from Kansas City, and staying at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island. But after reading through the reviews here on Trip Advisor, I'm discouraged by the negative reviews of the South Seas Island Resort, along with the negative reviews of most of the places on Captiva and Sanibel Island. I'm not a picky person, but I do get grossed out by dirty hotel rooms!!

I'm looking for a resort type setting with a big pool. I want to be close to the beach...right on the beach is preferred!

Do I ignore the negative reviews of the rooms at South Seas, and go ahead and book it? Or do I look somewhere else? I'm even open to going to another location in Florida (even though I think the shelling on Captiva and Sanibel would keep our boys busy)!

Maybe get a VRBO rental? Lots of highly rated rentals in both places, including condos, single family homes, cottages...many beach front, resort like.

We have gone to Captiva twice and stayed at the Tween Waters Inn. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the beach was right across the street and there was a very nice pool too.
