Anyone been to these timeshare condos recently? We've been to Maui several times...we're going to meeting friends there in January 2013. Any particular room we should ask for? We're all empty nesters traveling without kids.
Thanks Fodorites!

I can't remember if I have walked this property - but love the location and it looks nice.

And I/we personally would request an Ocean View - and up at least 3 or 4 floors.
This is about as far north on Maui as I'd book in January. South Maui will have the calmer ocean in winter.
Personally - I like to see the Ocean kicking up - and if you go to the beach early - it's usually the calmest/best visibility for snorkeling and diving.

Also consider taking the ferry ride over to Lanai - on a calm day of course.
Thanks for the info - I'll request an ocean view as high up as possible and maybe take a ferry ride. I'm also interested in booking a private cruise for 4 couples....I'll post that also and see what kind of response I get. Thanks again Tomsd and ChiSue!
We own a 2 bedroom at the Sands and were there in Feb-12. We have stayed in Ocean View and Ocean Front and would take either one. We actually got an Ocean Front one year that was completely obstructed by trees and took an Ocean View instead. They are in the process of doing upgrades but nothing that should bother your time there. I also would try to get up at least 3 floors. It's a bit windier in West Maui, but it's a nice area.
If the ferry you're talking about is Lanai or Molokai, let me give you a tip (one that was actually published in a Fodors book). If you plan to sit outside, be sure to take something to wipe the seats off. The spray from the ocean gets on everything.
We haven't taken an private cruise but did take one to Lanai with Trilogy and would recommend it.
Forget the calmer oceans in January. You're going to see LOTS of whales up close and personal.
Have a great trip.
Have not stayed at the Sands but stayed next door last year and I really like that area. We did have lunch at the Sands one day and think its a nice property from the outside anyway.
You can walk to farmers market, there is a good pizza place across the street, we could see sea turtles and whales from our lanai - it was all great.
We went whale watching with the Pacific Whale Foundation- what a fun day that was - whales everywhere!
Love Maui!
