San Hose Airport to Union Square
Landing at San Jose Airport at 7:10p.m.
We are not renting a car and are
looking for the best, reasonably
priced way to get to our hotel near
Union Square. We are a party of 6
(2 adults, 4 kids). Also will be looking for
transport from Unioin Square to San
Francisco Airport at l0:00 p.m. for
trip home. Thanks for the advice,

Rent a car. The San Jose Airport is approximately 1.5 hours away from Union Square provided there isn't traffic. Especially if you are travelling with 4 kids and at night. Make life easy on yourselves. You can always drop the car downtown SF and not deal with it after you've gotten yourselves to the hotel. You may also want to hire a driver service, but this would be much more expensive than renting a car.

For the trip from your hotel to the airport, see your desk clerk as soon as you arrive. He or she will be able to tell you the prices and times for the airport shuttle service pick-up and then you can decide whether it's more efficient and economical to reserve a place on the shuttle or to take a cab.

If you are comfortable driving the distance (about 60 miles) and driving into the city it would probably be cheaper to rent a car BUT return it in downtown SF that evening or the next morning to avoid paying for parking. You don't want a car in the city.
Otherwise you could check with the long list of shuttle companies and get a quote. The San Jose Airport has a website listing ground transportation options at: www.sjc.org. A shuttle will cost you over $100. Also, call the hotel where you are staying in Union Square and they may be able to provide a more affordable option.
Your cheapest option (but the most hassle) would be to take a cab to the Caltrain station in downtown San Jose, ride the Caltrain up to the San Francisco station and then take another cab from there to your hotel in Union Square.
There are many options for getting to the SF Airport from Union Square (cab or shuttle) and your hotel desk clerk can easily help you with this. Much less hassle than getting from SJC to SF. Good luck!

Jean, Try contacting the following: Super Shuttle at 408/558-9500 or www.supershuttle.com or South and East Bay Airport Shuttle at 1/800/548-4664. You may also want to try a limo service in the San Jose area. I have phone numbers if needed.

Is it too late to change your reservations to spend the first night in San Jose? Otherwise your only option is to rent a car. The Caltrain runs to SF of course, but with the children in unknown (to you) area I wouldn't recommend it! At daytime it maybe interesting for kids to sit on the 2nd level of the train.
To go back to the airport you can either reserve a shuttle or call a taxi. Shuttles charge per person so you may opt for a taxi or a limo. If you leave not only your heart but your wallet in San Francisco Samtrans bus will take you to the airport, call to find out.
