San Francisco...Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square or ???

For a family, I'd like to hear pros and cons from everyone regarding a hotel location
in San Francisco. Would it be better to be based in the Fisherman's Wharf area, Union
Square or some other location??

Stay in the Union Square area if you enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life and at Fisherman's Wharf if you would rather be in a haven for tourists.

I was just in San Francisco last week, and we stayed at the Chancellor just off Union Square. For us it was a fine location (and hotel) - very convenient to transit and, depending on how much you like to walk, walkable to quite a bit (we walked to Chinatown, North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf, the Ferry Building, etc). We were two early-30s women, though, no kids. The Embarcadero gets recommended here very often as a good area to stay, and I'd agree, but I couldn't find anything there within our budget.

How long is your stay and what do you plan to do - mainly tourist stuff at Fisherman's Wharf, or...?

I currently am booked at a hotel in Fisherman's Wharf because I can drop off our rental car 1 block away and also because we are taking the PM tour of Alcatraz which departs nearby...so it's probably worth sticking with it unless someone has a really negative experience with the Fisherman's Wharf area (not safe, etc).

So are you only staying one night?

Fisherman's Wharf is very touristy, but you are tourists. I had no safety concerns about being there.

I think Fisherman's Wharf is a fine to stay. It's not quite a "central" as Union Square, but for what you describe should work fine. I think it's a pretty area.
