San Francisco - where to get great coffee in Union Square area
Hi fellow Fodorites, I'm after recommendations for good coffee around Union Square. Last year on the east coast I found a few good coffee places - A Cup of Joe in Chelsea NYC, Bon Bon Arte Cafe in Philadelphia and JP Licks in Cambridge, Boston.

Locals like a chain called Peet's, which has an outdoor location at the Macy's men's store on Stockton near Geary. Also Caffe Rulli, in Union Square itself.
Blue Bottle also has a location near 5th and Mission, a bit closer to Union Square (but more out of the way).

please don;'t generalize to "locals" - I despise peet's altho I respect it's a local chain. their coffee is way too dark and bitter for my taste. BlueBottle and Caffe Rulli (Literally in Union Square) are excellent.

My favorite coffee in SF is Philz - they just opened up a store on Van Ness between Turk and Eddy. It's worth a walk. They make the coffee by the cup so you get to choose the blend you want (my favorite is Ether, but unlike one of the previous poster I like my coffee dark and bitter.)
Blue Bottle is also great. I think they make it by the cup but I'm not sure.
I love Peet's - it's like Starbucks would be if Starbucks was good.
