San Francisco Trip Report - Weekend

Wow, it was a wild 48 hours in the city this weekend. DH picked me up at work in San Jose just before 2:30 pm. We made it to the hotel on Bush at Taylor around 3:45. We stayed at the Mayflower which is in the nicer of the budget hotels category (borderline boutique-y, LOL).

--Friday evening we ate at Max's cafe at the Maxwell Hotel for an early, good & casual dinner. Then we headed over to the Warfield for a semi-private party. Quite wild with lots of rock (mostly heavy metal, and yes I did wear ear plugs. The musicians were Joe Satriani, Mark McGrath (he's also a commentator on Extra), Slash from Guns and Roses, Scott Weiland and 2 of the Sex Pistols. LOL, Surprisingly, I sort of got into it!

-- Saturday we went to the Audio Engineers convention in the morning at Moscone (to appease DH), and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in the afternoon. It included Steve Earle, Guy Clark & T-Bone Burnett (the O Brother Where Art Thou music producer) who are pretty well known in bluegrass and country music circles. Good BBQ and burritos. Oh, and we saw the Blue Angels overhead. Musicians were cussing them out, LOL. In the evening we saw Paul Williams at the Empire Plush Room at 8 pm (great venue!) and Norton Buffalo at 10 pm. For you locals, he does the theme song/ harmonica to the Bay Area Backroads TV show. The show was at Biscuits & Blues. Yummy southern food there also.

--Sunday, well we had our Continental breakfast and then went up and collasped in our room. DH went back to Moscone for his convention. I was happy our hotel had a late check out time of 1 pm. We were thinking we'd go back to the Bluegraas Festival (Emmy Lou Harris, Ricky Scaggs, Elvis Costello & T-Bone Burnett together), but we were too tired. So we got home about 2:30 ish.

Would like some info on the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass fest. I live in Tennessee and have attended the Bonnaroo music festival several times. How crowded is the Bluegrass music fest. Is traffic a problem? any info would be appreciated. Thinking of going to San Fran next year for this festival instead of doing Bonnaroo.
Thanks!

Hi Smoot-
If you get to the festival before opening, the traffic/parking isn't too bad. There is always public transit (buses and the muni train line). This year, we got over there at 1:30 pm instead of before opening which was 11 am. We parked about a mile out. We were already in the walking mode anyway that weekend. It is crowded, but with the great music, I felt it was worth it. I'm not familiar with the Bonnaroo festival, so it would be hard to compare.
