San Francisco to LA or LA to San Francisco ?!?
Hello,
I'm planning to travel on california coast this next summer and I am asking me which is the best itinerary... North to South or South to North. I'm planning this trip in july... Any advise for this period? Great thx everybody, my first time in CA, hope enjoy this tripp at max.

We make the trip once or twice a year. Highway 1 is beautiful driving in either direction.
Some drivers prefer South to North because that puts them on the inside lane where they fell safer and because that direction guarantees less sun in the eyes.

And some drivers, like my wife and I, prefer North to South because it puts you on the west side of the road where all the turnouts are. Much safer than crossing traffic, which often consists of sport car or motorcycle owners testing their high speed cornering ability.

so do I, driving on the edge of a cliff just scares me too much. You probably know which you are. After that decision, it doesn't matter, obviously, you have the same things going up or down. If you truly don't care about the drive, I'd pick based on which route gave you better rates for car or airfare or something logical. Sometimes car rentals at LAX are real expensive, it seems to me. I saved a lot of money once flying into Burbank and not LAX, as the rentals were so much less (plus it was a convenient drive to Santa Barbara from there).

If the decision is still open, I'd recommend north to south. As I drove south to north last month, I kept saying "Darn, I wish I was going south--look at those views behind us!" Going south, you are closer to the ocean, and the views seemed more open. But if you must do south to north for other reasons, it's still well worthwhile. Have fun!

Coming late to this I'll just add:
I only will go South to North now after having done the North to South.
With North to South, I do not like the steep drops to the ocean on the right and the on-coming traffic on the left. Don't find it relaxing at all.

Having just spent the weekend in Carmel and having driven down 1 to Big Sur and back, we decided that for the direction--N or S--does not matter in terms of actual driving i.e. I don't find it any different in terms of comfort in driving either direction. I have no problem with either. However, we did decide that N to S has better vista for a front seat passenger, and S to N has better vistas for the driver.

For my English and Australian friends, I always suggest south to north for obvious reasons of lack of familiarity with driving on the wrong side of the road (to them) while driving a somewhat challenging road. This is especially important where the driver can't be spending much time checking out the great views, since attention needs to be on the road.
For me, however, as a driver, and for the benefit of all of my passengers, I personally like heading north to south.
I will say this: having driven a friend from England down this very road (SF to LA)last March, another thing to consider is whether anyone has a fear of heights. My friend was eager (and in fact asked us) to take the coastal route, but once he was sitting in the passenger seat seeing the sharp drops, he was reminded of his fear of heights. And actually had to close his eyes at some points along the way.
