My husband and I are going to San Francisco for a day and a half before we head down the Pacific Coast Highway. Since we will have only one San Francisco dinner, I want to make it a good pick.
Price is a small consideration; that is, expensive is okay, but over-the-top expensive is not. (Modestly priced is always okay.) We are open to any cuisine but we usually favor sushi, italian, french, or mexican.
Suggestions, anyone?

It's a funny question because in SF you can hardly go wrong. These are just two that are in my mind tonight. Both excellent.
If you read about restaurants and some pique your interest, why don't you past back and mention them by name and you will get reviews?

Coco was just reviewed on our local PBS station and was highly regarded (however small portions and pricey, per one reviewer).
Slanted Door consistently gets good reviews though I haven't tried it yet!
Hard to pick just one restaurant for one meal in SF! Depends on what you want too -- we like A16 in the Marina (Chestnut St.) for good Campagnia cuisine; love Venticello in Nob Hill area for romantic ambiance; enjoy Grand Cafe in the theater district for bistro food; like Hawthorne cafe near the MOMA; Gary Danko is wonderful of course but pricey and you usually need reservations a mile ahead.
I agree with the list's Fleur de Lys; not sure Boulevard rates a top spot but the bar/room are wonderful. I thought the meal we had a Houston recently (around the Embarcadero from the Pier 39 heading toward bridge/ballpark etc.) was better and more reasonable.

Hwy 1 south of San Francisco to about Santa Barbara is the Cabrillo Highway. PCH is the Southern Calif section of Hwy 1.

I like all the restaurants people have mentioned except for Piperade (not a fan of Basque cuisine), but I especially like Coco500. If you go, do not miss the green beans (and the beef cheeks, which I have not had, are a house specialty).
I loved Boulevard - not over-the-top.
I just had dinner with family(visitng) at A16. While I do like the location and I adore their meatballs, I do not think this would be my one pick in SF.

www.belden-place.com is an alleyway of great restaurants in the financial district that always feels "very San Francisco" to me.
I already posted, but I was thinking what if I had only one meal, as a tourist, in San Francisco. The choice would be Slanted Door. It is decidedly Vietnamese, so if you don't like Asian food it might not be the best choice, but you can see that it is a huge favorite among Fodorites and Foodies. The food is wonderful but the location is so much fun that it is a perfect package. The Ferry Building is also one of those if you only had one thing to see in the city...
So I strongly recommend Slanted Door. Great food, and great fun. Kind of a thrilling location.

No restaurant that I know of in San Francisco has a dress code. You;ll be fine if you wear slacks and a shirt (and you wouldn't be turned away in jeans). No jacket necessary (and in fact, you'd probably be the only one wearing one if you did). You'll love the restaurant -- do not fail to order the green beans!!

Is that crub claws or the whole Dungenesss crub? Or did you mean a wonderful fun night crub?
Maybe he meant that thing you use to lock the steering wheel while you are dining on crub claws in a night crub?
