san francisco neighborhoods ques

Hello. I apologize that this is not travel-related but I really need the help of the locals here. I will be moving to SF this fall to work in the UCSF medical center in Parnassus. I did some research and was thinking of renting in the sunset neighborhood as this seems closer the hosp. in the map and the proximity to golden gate park is great. I was thinking of lower pacific heights as another option..also, is the western addition neighborhood generally safe?.. I do plan to make use of public transportation if feasible but just in case, how would it be driving from the sunset area to parnassus (any steep hills?)..I have lived and survived in chicago with my car but the hills of SF just terrify me..I will be visiting the city this weekend to explore neighborhoods and transportation options..In the meantime, any input ( any neigborhood suggestions?) would be much appreciated. I am 30 and single, do not care much for the clubs or bars but I love the outdoors and the theater. Thank you in advance for your help.

Inner Sunset is closest to UCSF. Anywhere you live remember that parking is horrible at the Parnassus campus!! The campus is on a hill but it is not too steep. Be careful of "Lower Pacific Heights", sometimes that is real estate talk for the Tenderloin (also known as TenderNob). Other areas to look in (depending on your budget) are Castro, Noe Valley, Cole Valley, and Upper Mission (or "Mission Heights" in rental talk). One of your best resources my be the bulletin boards inside the Medical Sciences building at UCSF (next to the main elevators). There are always TONS of close by rentals posted up there from people looking to rent to med students, etc. Outer Sunset is FOGGY!!!!

Also take a look at a neighborhood called Glen Park. It's small & out of the way, yet convenient to the freeway, so you can get OUT of town from time to time. Also has good transit connections. I believe there are a couple of bus lines that run from there past the campus, or past near the campus.

The outer sunset is very foggy! You might also look at Jordan Park and the Inner Richmond as places to live. There is a shuttle that goes back and forth between the Parnassus Campus and what used to be the old Firemen's Fund building on California near the Laurel Shopping Center.(You could easily walk from Jordan Park or Pacific Heights). You could also take the #1 California.
The Castro is a good suggestion as is Cole Valley. I am fairly certain it is the N Judah that runs by the Castro and up past the medical center. You might also look in the Haight with a particular eye to the Upper Haight. Wherever you live in the city, I agree taking public transportation to the campus is the only way to go. The recommendation for the housing office at UCSF is a great one! The new residents/interns start in the beginning of July which might effect how many listings you see when you visit now. Nonetheless, there should be plenty of places listed. Finally, if you let us know exactly what you want in a neighborhood we might be able to help out a bit more.

I used to work at UCSF and that is how I ended up moving into Cole Valley which is the other neighborhood closest to UC (the previously mentioned inner Sunset being the other). Many of my neighbors have some connection to UC and most either walk there or take the N Judah or the 6 Parnassus. I believe the inner Sunset is slightly less expensive in terms of rentals and it is closer to GGP, it is more foggy because there is no hill between the inner Sunset and the ocean to act as a barrier. 9th and Irving is the hub of the inner Sunset with lots of restaurants and stores. It has seen an influx of younger residents (other than med students) in the past few years as people look for less (relatively) expensive areas of the City and it is becoming less of a primarily lower middle class area. I'm biased of course in that I prefer Cole Valley--it is a pretty neighborhood, older houses and more tree lined streets with a more initmate feel. UCSF is easily reached by public transportation so you really don't have to drive.
