San Francisco Itinerary for March 10 -14 - Please let me know what you think.

Hi All

We're travelling from the East Coast next week and have finally worked out an intinerary. Please let me know what you think. I would really like to fit the Asian Art Museum and the Castro area in - if you have suggestions on where I can cut and paste that would be great. Please also let me know if my timings work.

Thanks for all the great advice that I have gotten off here so far.

THURSDAY
Arrive at SFO at 752pm. Catch BART to Civic Centre station and then a taxi to the hotel. Settle in hotel room.

FRIDAY
Use National Geographic Haight-Ashbury walking tour backwards - two hours.

Use Fodor’s Pocket Walk through Golden Gate Park pg 59 - two hours. Including Conservatory of Flowers, National Aids Memorial Grove, Shakespeare Garden, Strybing Arbortoreum and Botanic Gardens, Japanese Tea Garden with possibly lunch here, the Music Concorce.
Take buses #5 then 18 to Legion of Honor for Bouquet to Arts. Walk to the Cliff House. Drinks watching the sunset at the Cliff House. Catch a bus back downtown.
Spend the evening exploring Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. Go to Ripley’s Believe it or Not! (it's a family tradition - dont ask).

SATURDAY
Hop on a cable car to the wharf. Take a 930am ferry from Pier 41 Alcatraz Island. Audio Tour and wander around the island.
Return to Mainland around 1pm. Head to the area south of Market Street (SoMa) to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Have a light lunch at Caffé Museo. Finish the trip with a stroll through the Yerba Buena Gardens and its slew of new attractions across from the museum. Return to hotel to prepare for evening function.

SUNDAY
Begin the day with a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge - 11am Cityguides tour.

Then head to North Beach, the Italian quarter. Use Fodor’s Pocket North Beach and Telegraph Hill walk - pg 31 - two hours. Includes all major sites and going up Coit tower.

Use Chinatown walking tour in Fodor’s Pocket pg 27 - Two and half hours.

Then take the California Street cable car up blue-blood Nob Hill and top off the evening with a cocktail at one of the top-floor lounges in fine hotels such as the Sir Francis Drake, the Grand Hyatt, and The Mark Hopkins.

MONDAY
Explore Maiden Lane. At 11am go on Bawdy & Naughty (meets at Maiden lane) tour by Cityguides. Explore the financial district and Ferry building. 2pm tour with Bitours from Fisherman’s Wharf to Muir Woods and Sausolito. Explore Sausolito and go back to SF around 6pm. Catch BART back to SFO for flight at 1120pm.

Arrival. Are you a young musculine male? The Civic Center BART station will be deserted and occupied by homeless after 6pm. Not safe.

BART+taxi? A shuttle from SFO to your hotel (find on-line coupon) should be around $12 w/coupon.

Lunch at Japanese Tea Garden? Do they offer lunches now, not only tea? Can somebody confirm that? I don't think you can have lunch anywhere IN the park unless you go for hot dogs and ice-cream off a stand.

Saturday to Alcatraz? You must've made reservations by now, right?

I don't know where you stay, but check out bus 76, runs on Sundays only, from downtown to the bridge, this will be the easiest and maybe fastest way to get there. Check the schedule, it runs once an hour.

Going to the GG bridge one day and Sausalito another day will be a duplication, the tours usually allow you to stay in Sausalito, so you can walk back over the bridge and catch a bus to downtown.

Faina--When my parents moved to the bay area, my mom and i took bart to meet my dad for lunch. We accidentally got off at the civic center. It was mid morning, and even at that hour it was pretty eye opening! We were headed to the financial district, so were in dresses and heels. We walked very fast, lol!

OH, and by the way, there are NO taxis waiting at the BART station.

MMS, why did you try to wake up our dear homeless?

LOL Faina! That was my very first view of SF! I remember asking my mom is the guy laying on the ground was dead. She whispered to me to be quiet til we got a bit further away, lol! I was in college at the time and very naive.

I used to take evening Italian language classes downtown and there are usually people milling about the BART stations (not scary people).

I would agree though that it would be a nicer experience getting off at Powell or Montgomery.

The Powell Street station is connected to the San Francisco Shopping Center on Market (Downtown Mall). So if the mall is open until 9pm, there should be plenty of regular traffic.

To fit in The Castro - you might want to tack it on in front of your Haight-Ashbury walk as they're right over the hill from one another.

You can probably take the F-line or subway straight to the Castro Stree station and walk around a bit - maybe have breakfast at Luna Pienna.

You can hop on the 37 Corbett bus and Church & Sanchez and hop off at Buena Vista Park. Walk by the tennis courts for some great views of the city - up to the top if you want to see the Golden Gate and the ocean in the distance - or simply go down the North side of the park where you'll end up right on Haight Street.

Hi Binkieloo, one correction. The Sir Francis Drake and The Grand Hyatt are not on NobHill. These two hotels are at Union Square.

The Sir Francis Drake has Harry Denton's Starlight Room. This is on Powell St., almost one block up (north) from Post St and Union Square.

The Grand Hyatt is on Stockton St., again one half block up from Post St. and Union Square.

Maiden Lane runs west from Stockton St.
where you will catch your tour.

Do have a fabulous trip.

And oh, if you are in the NobHill area you might enjoy going into Grace Cathedral, a SF landmark.

And when in North Beach I sure would have lunch there. BTW North Beach tends to usually being sunnier then a lot of areas of SF. And while in North Beach you might enjoy looking inside St. Peter and Paul's church. Another old SF landmark.

Also, I agree with others. I would take BART to the Powell St. Station. When you get off if you do not see any taxi's on Market St., just walk up Powell St. A block or two up will be taxis for sure. If not in front of the Villa Florence Hotel just cross Geary and you will find taxis in front of the St. Francis Hotel.

Hi Again

We've decided to take a shuttle from the airport. Luggage and all that!

Thanks for the comments. Every little bit helps.

As others have pointed out, lunch may or may not be served at the Japanese Tea garden. I only remember tea. But, if you want to have a picnic in Golden Gate park, which if the weather is nice would be great - there is a great grocery store called Andronicos close by. They have really good sandwiches and all sorts of tasty stuff for picnicing. The store is located on Irving St, just south of GG Park.

Hi Binkieloo,

I live in Oakland now, but lived in SF for about 9/10 years and go into the city regularly. As such, I have a slightly different opinion than some.

Although the Powell and Montgomery stations are nicer than Civic Center, I totally disagree that “The Civic Center BART station will be deserted and occupied by homeless after 6pm.” I am female and was in that station alone last weekend at that time. It is not deserted at that time. In fact, I was also there last Friday and Saturday night at around 10:00 p.m. or so and it was crowded since it is so close to the venues where the ballet and symphony let out. Like any city, just be aware of your surroundings.

Suggestions about cutting down on time: a walk to the Cliff House from the Legion of Honor is going to take quite a long time and I don’t know which way you are planning on going, but I don’t see this as being eventful. I would take a bus. I don’t know exactly how far that is but I am guessing a couple of miles.

Fisherman’s wharf and Pier 39 are probably recommended in travel guides but they are very touristy and locals don’t go there. I NEVER take guests there and don’t recommend that area at all. All you are going to see are trashy souvenirs. I would explore the Castro that night instead. You will get much more of our local flavor and be mixing with San Franciscans, not tourists.

Most tourists are unaware that it is freezing on the Golden Gate Bridge. If you want to walk across, dress very, very warmly.

The financial district does not have much to recommend itself for exploring, except that the Ferry Building is fabulous especially if you are a foodie.

I would spend more time in the City rather than going to Muir Woods and Sausalito. Muir Woods is fine, but you are really rushing to get everything packed in here. Sausalito is like Fisherman’s wharf, but more expensive. It mainly consists of expensive, trashy art galleries imho. Again, I would recommend a walk around the Castro over doing either of these things.

For more local flavor, you should really take a walk in the Mission and I would suggest a walk down Valencia between 16th and about 21rst or 22nd. There are lots of great restaurants and funky shops and you will see natives going about their business. You will have a much better flavor for San Francisco walking around here than the wharf, the Financial district or Sausalito. You could take BART to the 16th Street station (on 16th and Mission) and then walk up to Valencia.

Other fun neighborhoods to walk around that, again, will be more interesting are Noe Valley (24th Street), the Marina (Union Street or Chestnut Street) and Pacific Heights (Fillmore Street). I would recommend a stroll down one or two of these streets rather than your trip to Sausalito/Muir Woods. They are local scenes with shops, coffee houses and restaurants and regular people going about their thing.

I also don't think you need quite so much time in Golden Gate Park and I'd try to squeeze in a walk around one of the neighborhoods instead of so much time in the park.

I’m happy to answer any questions.

Have fun and bring your umbrella. It doesn’t seem to stop raining these days!

Walk from the Legion of Honor to Cliff House in the Lincolm Park is lovely. There's a trail along the cliff and comes out to Camino del Mar, takes about an hour walking leisurely. I like taking this route from the Lands End toward the Legion of Honor, so I'm walking facing the Golden Gate Bridge. The best views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Saturday morning Farmers Market in the Ferry building is quite an experience, too.

OK - Revised a little due to some complications and trying to fit some of the suggetions in:

Thursday:
Arrive SFO 8pm, take shuttle to hotel and settle in.

Friday:
9am Muir Woods and Sausalito tour. Drop off at pier 41 to collect Citypass tickets.
Bus to Legion of Honor for exhibit that ends on Friday. Bus from there to Cliff house for sunset drinks.
Bus to FW for quick and cheap dinner. Visit Ripley's Believe it of Not (It's a family tradition)
Take F line back to hotel via the Ferry Building.

Saturday:
Take cable car to Pier 41 for Alcatraz tour.
On return take F line to SFMOMA. See Museum and Beuna Vista Centre.
Return to hotel via Asian Art Museum.
Prepare for evening function.

Sunday:
Brunch in North Beach, with walking tour including Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower.
Chinatown walk with late lunch - dim sum.
Cable car to Nob Hill.

Monday:
11am Bawdy and Naughty tour with Cityguides - Maiden lane area.
Take F line to Castro area - wander from there to Haight-Ashbury and then on to Golden Gate park.
Return to hotel to catch shuttle to Hotel for late night flight.

Whilst typing this I've realised we're riding the F line quite a lot. If there are any suggestions on a more scenic/different route to take - suggestions welcome.

Thanks again for indulging me.

Bianca

>>>Take F line to Castro area - wander from there to Haight-Ashbury <<<

Big time hills between these two places. Take 24 Divisadero bus.

Sorry but your Friday and Saturday plans sound awfully busy. You might be too tired to attend your evening function Saturday night. I would vote to skip Sausalito in order to rearrange your schedule a bit. Is the Muir Woods/ Sausaltio trip a combined package? I do love Muir Woods and would hate to see you miss that if you've never been to the redwoods. If you've seen redwoods before, I'd leave Muir Woods for another time.

I don't know anything about the Bawdy and Naughty tour but might consider dropping that in favor of other activities. Also, I'd probably pick either the MOMA or Asian Art Museum for Saturday. As much as I love museums, one a day is plenty and you're already seeing my favorite (the Legion of Honor) another day.

I know its hard to have someone criticize your plans, but my head started to swim as I read yours. Good luck with the planning - I'm sure you'll have a great time whatever you choose to do. Cutting a bit of the itinerary will to give you an excuse to return!

I agree with Stu. Although you can walk from the Castro to the Haight, there are some large hills and you are already packing a lot into this day.

You can take the 24 up Divisadero and get off at the corner of Divisadero and Haight Street and then walk up the hill. If you are really tired already, you could even take the 6, 7, or 71 from the corner of Divisadero and Haight about 7 blocks up to the corner of Haight and Masonic (where you will probably want to start your Haight Ashbury walk).

Also, I don't advise eating in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Overpriced and mediocre. Eat elsewhere at all costs. San Francisco is foodie heaven if you stay away from the tourist traps.

I agree that you are packing too much into the Sausalito/Muir Woods day by expecting to go to the Legion of Honor that same day.

I also agree about the next day. I frequently spend an entire day at MOMA and I'm a member and have been there dozens of times. I'd skip the Asian and do it next time.

The F line is probably the best for what you are using it for, and it is a fun line since it uses old street cars from all over the world.

Ciao and enjoy our beautiful city.

I wonder when Binkieloo is visiting, is she here now? All weekend I see young people dressed... strangely, to say the least. Like Halloween in training. She was going to a fetish ball, is this it?

HI Faina

We leave on Thursday and the Fetish ball is Saturday night - there's no way we'll miss it. I will keep in mind all the other suggestions about cutting things out - we'll probably only manage the MOMA on Saturday.

The Muir Wood/Sausalito is a package tour and is 4 hours - so we have the afternoon to do the Legion of Honor. We'll probably do Ripley's and then maybe go to Ghiradelli for dinner - from what I understand that's a bit better area - although we did get a recommendation on Lonely Planet for a restaurant at FW - Alioto's. We'll see.

Thanks for the idea to possibly save stuff for next time - but I dont know if I'll have a next time - I may be going home to South Africa in a couple of months and who knows when I'll get back here again...

Thanks again

Check the Legion's hours - I think it opens and closes early, 4 or 5 pm.

Also at the Legion if you show MUNI ticket or pass you'll get a discount, not much, but why not?
