Hello, One and All, NeoPatrick is coming to San Francisco, and he’ll have time for a dinner GTG on Friday night.
Any suggestions? Patrick, can you tell where you’re staying, so we can plan on a place close to your hotel?
My e-mail faina22@hotmail.com if anybody doesn’t want to post here.
San Francisco GTG Friday, October 24.

I so wish I could come up! We arrive on Oct 22 from our trip back east and I just do not see it as possible. Someday!
I am sure it will be big fun!
My wife will be out of town then, but I'll be there. We're leaving for a 3 week vacation this Friday, so don't expect any communication from me until we get back (Oct 12).
Stu Dudley
Sounds like fun. Count me in.
Oh rats, I'd love to come, but we're going to be out of town. Post a report and photos, please!
Maybe this time I won't expose the shots to sunlight like I'd done before
I'll be there! Maybe Mr. Kat can come, too!
Sure. We'll be IN SF from Monday the 20th and leaving on Saturday the 25th of October.
Friday night is fine -- Oct. 24th.
We're staying at Columbus Motor Inn between FW and North Beach (unless I get lucky later on with Priceline, but I'm not holding my breath). But we're open to any place at all.
Well, now that just stinks. We're planning on San Francisco Oct 9-12. Geez.
Have fun!
BeachGirl, just start another thread for another GTG, we can take as many as we can get
Thanks, Faina, could you put me down as a "maybe" since I am going out of the country the week after?
Me as a maybe, too. I will definitely try. I would love to meet the famous King Neo!
"Thanks, Faina, could you put me down as a "maybe" since I am going out of the country the week after?"
Gee, Shanghainese, you shouldn't feel you'll have to leave the country. I don't think we'll get THAT rowdy!
Well I am planning on coming. cat-get your tickets now. LAX has $49 fares each way flying into Oakland.
LoveItaly-Let me know if you need to work out transportation issues.
Hi Faina, Patrick and Paula! I will email you Paula.
And cat, it will be so good to see you again. Wish Dawn could join us but hopefully that will work out in the future. And LucieV, you better be at the GTG my dear!
Lucie, you've got to be there!
I just need to decide if I want to come up for the day or stay overnight. Bring Mr. Kat or come solo? Buy another pair of sexy pumps at Cole Haan or try somewhere else?
Oh dear, there are just too many things to think about!
cat when do you get back from France?
Lovie, I can't wait!
Dawn, you can do it. What's a little more jet lag?

Hey, that's nice! Sure, more will join us.
Faina, I'm trying to decide my flight. I don't think Mr. Kat can come so I'll be solo. Any idea of the time? Would it be unrealistic to try to fly home that night?
I will definitely try. Right now, I'm a freaking wreck with my worst-ever case of pre-trip jitters. If I were the type to break out in a rash, my body would be covered.
Leaving in less than 24 hours, I can barely put one foot in front of the other, let alone figure out where I'm going to be on October 24. God, I wish I could, for once, leave for a trip without having a nervous breakdown.
Anyway, I know the 24th will be a blast, and I will do my best to join youse guys.
Lucie - hate to say it but glad someone else gets really bad pre-trip jitters
You will be fine and the trip will be great!
Thanks, MomDD, I appreciate your saying that. I'm feeling really ashamed of myself. I even googled "Pre-trip jitters." I wish I weren't me sometimes.![:-]](/community/smileys/oops_png.gif)
But we're glad you're you, LuceLu! Btw, where all are you going and when are you getting home?
Yes we want to know about your trip.
Gosh Lucie - really I get them so bad I have been known to cancel trips...seriously. or change dates..last Oct we were supposed to be at a wedding for a long weekend - we still went (dh MADE me go) but we compromised and left a day later and came home a day ealier..seriously stuff like that. I am horrible about leaving my daughter...

I purchased an earthquake kit for 100.00 and made sure it was here before we left ... this is true stuff ...we had been having some pretty good shake, rattles and roles and I was certain something would happen while we were in NYC.
It is only really bad when I am leaving dd or leaving dh... when I am going alone it is not as bad (leaving dd WITH dh)...
I started taking drugs to fly about 18 months ago - it helps... Xanax...
I have decided maybe I was a really good travel agent. I like PLANNING trips but maybe not taking them??? LOL
I have started to get phobic already about just going back east with dd for two weeks... I think it is not as bad because I was planning Europe with her and that seemed HUGE...and now it is like..okay... we can do this ...
Anyway...email me...anytime - Karens gets the gitters pretty bad too from what I recall
We could start our own 12 step program... "hi my name is Dawn, and I am a travel lover who is also a travel phobic!" LOL
BTW, I generally do fine about 48 hours into my trip.
Now..back to your gtg thread
MomDD, will em you tonight or in the am bf I leave. Thank you so much...I am reassured now: either I'm not crazy, or you're just as crazy as I am. Either way, I'm not alone.
If I don't fall over from overwork--can I join, too?
Please do, TrvlMvn!
Looks like Mr. Kat is a yes, so Faina, please add him.
We'll look for a place to stay near FW, too. Suggestions? I'm not all that familiar with the area. If we fly into Oakland, is there a way to take BART to FW area?
Hi Cat - I am not going but yes, you can take the BART - ds and I did it a few times to look at schools for him in S.F. we flew on JetBlue into Oakland.
If FW is Fisherman's Wharf - BART does not go near there.
Stu Dudley
hmmm... ds and I flew to Oakland and took the BART and stayed at the Hyatt FW (I am also assuming it is Fisherman's Warf?) We definately took the BART because I wanted him to get use to it before moving there for school (which he never did obviously)...
BART runs down Market Street - which is not close to the Wharf. It's too far for most people to walk from the Embarcadero station (with luggege) to the Wharf.
Stu Dudley
I am sure you are correct Stu -
I have only been a handful of times and think that we may have taken the BART into SF and then got a cab if we needed to - I cannot imagine me walking with my luggage that far... It was about 2 years or so ago.. I will ask ds - doubtful he remembers either though.
I do know we definately took the BART into SF - once we got off the BART and how we got to the Hyatt seems to be the ???
BART is not going to Fishermen's area. You can either take a shuttle or find a hotel in Embarcadero or Union Square south or east.
MomDD, was it Hyatt Embarcadero, and you walked to Fishermen's later without luggage, just for fun?

Okay... I talked to ds and he does remember. We stayed by Fisherman's warf. We got off the BART and had NO way of getting to the hotel and he remembers being annoyed at me for not having any idea what I was doing. We ended up finding a cab and taking it to the hotel.
there you have it. Sorry for the misinformation! I hate it when people post the wrong thing.
"and he remembers being annoyed at me for not having any idea what I was doing" - MomDD, as a mother of 2 adult sons, I'm telling ya, it's time for payback
cat-I thought I had your email address and tried to email you. Wanted to talk to you about doing something during the day on Friday if you are coming up a little earlier. My email is paulambrandt@yahoo.com.

Oh, Lucie !

You're in good company with those pre-travel jitters - I know me and the 24 hours before - yet once we walk out the front door, I'm better-hope you get to relax and have a grand time on your trip !

Anybody has restaurant suggestions? Preferrably not expensive, we've had people cancelling before if the prices were hight.
Maybe close to public transportation? Anybody taking BART?
Hey, if you think I'll pick a restaurant for you, I'll go with Daffodil
Thank you, King Neo, I'm a shanghai lady on the demure side although I've been mistaken for a male due to my writing style. Only last week when I was vilified on the Asia board by a foul mouth, a british gent commented on me as "he can certainly stand up for himself"!
Cat -- I think you should be looking for something else than shoes if Mr Kat is coming, something sparkling, hint, hint.
I will BART in from the East Bay.
Shanghainese, that is a good idea!
Although my red pumps were such a hit, it will be hard to pass up the Cole Haan store. Of course, if we are in FW, it might be easier to pass it up since it won't be as close.
Paula, I'll email you tomorrow! We may actually drive up, though. We'll see...
Cat -- You are demure too, I was hinting about Tiffany!
I know. I'm that rare girl that isn't turned on by Tiffany's.
Sexy shoes, though....hold me back!
Cat, Take Bart from the Oakland Airport(shuttle to Bart).
Take the Embarcadero Bart stop in San Francisco.
Walk to the Embarcadero, (two blocks), then hop on the F line (muni). It will take you to FW area.
Well I bought my plane ticket so I am coming for sure. Can't wait to see everyone!!
Do we have a where and when yet?
Not yet. Waiting for suggestions.
Thanks Susie.
Anyone have tips for a good hotel near FW? Something nice but doesn't have to be super fancy...
cat, we're staying at Columbus Motor Inn, between FW and North Beach -- best part is it has FREE parking if you're driving.

I've not stayed there before, but have stayed at their "sister" Cow Hollow Motor Inn. Nice, average large rooms -- more comfortable than fancy.
AAA rates are something like $120 a night.
So where are we meeting? I suspect Friday night is a bit of a problem -- busy night. Somewhere in North Beach maybe? Any ideas. Faina doesn't seem to want to take responsibility for choosing.
We did a gathering at Mona Lisa once (but for lunch) and I will say they took great care of us. Other ideas?
I ate at a great Italian place a few years ago, if I could only remember what it was called. Maybe you who are more familiar with the area might know. Is North Beach near enough to FW to walk? We were staying at the Radisson FW and walked there. It was on a corner, and the thing I remember most is the antipasti platter. It was so good, and fresh, with a whole bunch of things that choose from, that changed each night.
NEo, I'll look at your hotel. Thanks!
I am sorry I will miss this great event; I am going to be in Sedona for a conference.
Cat- I love the Argonaut in FW; it is a Kimpton boutique hotel in an elegant nautical theme.
North Beach is walking distance but not in high heels! .... a quick cab ride though.
There should be lots of great restaurants; it IS San Francisco! Gary Danko is near FW and is highly rated but probably very pricey. I like Fog City Diner which is a quick trolley or cab ride away; it is moderately priced.
Sign me a maybe.
If Sezchuan/Hunan is any one else's favorite. I love Hunan's on Samsome a block North of Broadway. Good prices and can accomadate parties no problem.

Spicy but really good!
ty
Well since I have plenty of free time on my hands and if you don't mind a gimp. My cast will have been off for three days by then. So count me in!!
Besides, I haven't been to San Francisco since I was a little kid. And I have wanted to meet many of you for awhile.
Tom
Shoot... I really wish I could be there!! I will have just gotten home on the 22 from being gone for 2 weeks and it is just not sensible for me to even think about coming up but will be there in spirit.
Tom - how are you feeling?
Dawn,
As they say,'one day at a time'. Some days are better than others. My stay here in Arizona has been really helpful. My sister and her family are great, especially her kids.
Tom
Well, you really should be asking Stu Dudley where would be a good place to eat. He may have left on vacation already. Have you checked his recommendations?
If budget is an issue, North Beach Pizza might work. I have never been but heard great things about their pizza:
http://www.northbeachpizza.com
Basta Pasta is inexpensive:
http://www.studyworld.com/culinary/Basta-Pasta--San-Francisco.htm
I like North Beach Restaurant. It is more expensive than Basta Pasta but the food is great, nice atmosphere:
http://www.northbeachrestaurant.com/menu.htm
The pastas are all between $19-$29. Meat and Chicken entrees between $22 - $39. Fish entrees $19 - $41. You wouldn't be disappointed.
If we are in town, I would love to come.
Tom... I do understand one day at a time..sometimes that is truly all we can do. You remain in my thoughts.
cat-I have stayed at Columbus Motor Inn a couple of times when I was paying for my own hotel room. For the price, it's a good deal and you can't beat the free parking since most places in SF charge $45-55 a night to park (including the Argonaut).
North Beach is definitely walking distance from the Columbus Motor Inn as they both are on Columbus. Not a bad walk.
I think anyplace in North Beach would be good. We had our last GTG at El Tutto Qua and enjoyed that. What time are we planning on meeting? We should check with a couple of restaurants to make sure they can accomodate our group.
Tom, I look forward to meeting you! Glad to hear you are doing better and that you have family to help you through this.
Picking a place for these things is always such an issue, and there are so many tastes to satisfy. While I like some nice, fine dining, it never seems to work with a group -- 12 or more here?
Here's something I'll throw out. Capp's Corner at Powell and Green in North Beach (almost next door to Beach Blanket Babylon). To be honest I've never eaten there but walked by it so many times. When we rented an apartment a block away, the local owners who have lived there for many years raved about. They mainly feature family style dining, and have a lot of groups about our size -- that's supposedly what they do best, and I've mainly heard only great things about the food (for typical Italian, not gourmet dining). The way I see it working is that for $18 or $20 per person -- they'd serve tureens of minestrone and their house salad with beans and beets, and then offer a selection of dishes to be shared family style. You can look at the website and click dinner menu to see choices. I'm thinking there could be some meat dishes, some vegetarian dishes, etc. -- something for everyone and all bills would be the same -- except for separate bar bills. Does this sound like anything we'd want to do? I just worry about the usual "ouch. I didn't realize my dinner was going to be $45 with a salad" or that sort of thing. Any personal experience with it?
http://www.cappscorner.com
Neo, I have no experience to speak of with restaurants in SF. Just wanted to add, while I don't want to pay $40-50 for just an entree, I don't mind paying a good price if the food is great!
I just think some place where we can move around easily, don't have to worry about disturbing others if we get too loud, and that has good wine or cocktails.
<< just think some place where we can move around easily, don't have to worry about disturbing others if we get too loud, and that has good wine or cocktails.>>
Henry's Hunan on Sansome fits that bill. Family style, so you just order a bunch of dishes and pass around.
thereyet
Works for me, thereyet! Especially if it is one step closer to making sure you are there!
I too was wondering about Asian/Chinese.
I don't know Henry's. Here's what Zagat's says -- not that it means a whole lot:
"Make sure you have plenty of water on hand or better yet, bring a fire hose - because atomic spicy dishes are the trademark of these not for the faint of heart Hunan hole in the wall haunts. Though some can't wait to head back for the cheap indulgences, some wonder what the fuss is as everything tastes the same and can be really greasy."
Food: 21
Decor: 7
Service: 15
Average price $19
I am in for anything. If we do someplace like Henry's, just need to make sure they have some dishes for those that don't like spicy. (That's not me BTW, I love spicy!)
Before I retired I use to go to a pub in the Embaradro center. Forgot the name but could make an inquiry if you want.
Only five weeks to go and there are only 70 posts on this thread!?! Shock, horror and dread! You guys better get going. The last SF GTG thread had over 200 posts!
Enough with the snide comments. Are the newlyweds coming?
Snide? Me? Someone sent me a note today and aksed how the "nudely weds" were doing! I thought that was cute. We'll be out of town, but as with all SF GTG I have missed, I will be with you in spirit.
I'm late to this - please put me in the "maybe" camp. I have a trip to Tahoe planned for sometime between Oct 20 and Nov 1. If I don't go up the hill on that weekend, I can drive down to SF on Friday.
I'm in the "maybe" category, too. Depends on a family commitment.
Roger, was it the Holding Company? It's still there, and the food is pretty good (bar food).
Okay, I can get airfare for $131 on Virgin America. Now I could use some help finding a nice hotel. Somewhere nice at about $200 a night. But I am willing to go higher.
I will be either on crutches or walking with a cane. Any suggestions.
Tom
mdlove, no, not the holding company. It was one of a chain of pubs first opened in Canada. I have a call in to a friend and he will get back to me.
All I remember was great fish and chips, pies and the like. It was fairly large as well.
Biiilly -- So you read and count all the posts on the GTGs that you don't attend?! Tsk, tsk ...
<<I am in for anything. If we do someplace like Henry's, just need to make sure they have some dishes for those that don't like spicy. (That's not me BTW, I love spicy!)>>

They have plenty of non-spicy dishes as well.
NeoP, that zagats review...would probably read the same for ANY Chinese food joint in the city...with the exception of the "spicy" part...on those dishes that are clearly marked as "spicy".
Put me in the group that loves the place.
Plus, I think that the family style dinning works great for a group like this.
My vote is for Henry's Hunan!
thereyet
Put me in the group that thinks that point of all this is to meet and talk with other Fodorites -- not about a gourmet fine dining experience. Where we eat is not that important to me. The big questions -- will the place easily reserve and handle a group our size (whatever that is) by moving tables and chairs to set us up as a group -- or will they want to split everyone up in a series of tables for 4 or so? Will they do separate checks -- especially for drinks? It seems to always end up a disaster with a group like this and one enormous bill. Is it easy to get to for those driving (parking?) and those arriving by public transportation? Can we sit and relax and chat for something like three hours, or after one hour will we start getting the "time's up" look? In other words, is this a place that caters to long relaxing group dinners or is it a "get 'em in and out" place? From past experience, I find that not everyone arrives at once. Will they want everyone there and seated and will they start pressuring you to order right away, or is it a place where you can spend an hour having cocktails first before anyone bats an eye about making you order? (These questions refer to any place we choose, not specifically aimed at Henry's).
Regarding "spicy", I've never seen that before as a major comment on Zagat's or anywhere else -- even for Hunan food. If we are really doing "family style" how big a problem is spicy if that's what they are really noted for? If half the people end up wanting to order their own dish to avoid firey hot, is that then a problem that defeats the original purpose? Just asking.
The place is great for groups. I have been there for Birthday parties with a dozen people. They bring the Tsing Toa's by the six pack to the table. I have seen groups larger then the one's I have described. They have screens that they can use to divide the room (or at least they used to).

I have never seen anyone "rushed" through a meal, especially any group. I always got the impression that they think like...the longer you are there, the more money you will spend.
They will cook dishes to the desired "hotness" requested. There are more non-hot dishes on the menu then hot dishes. This is the USA after all. But if YOU want it HOT, they will oblige you.
This is not what I would consider "fine dining" or pretentious cuisine. I is good old fashioned family style Chinese.
I can't answer the questions about separate checks. I have never asked for one.
I am not one to quibble about dining bills. I don't drink though and if there were heavy drinking going on I would expect those who drink the most...to pony up the most. But that is just me.
I do believe that this resto provides good value for the food. Often when you go to the standard resto, for many, the portions are too large and end up paying for food they can't finish. At a family style, you eat what you want, no more/no less. And if you need more food...they bring it.
Mostly, they have large round tables, seating ten or so. Two of those should easily do it. Easy to get up from, I have had that problem...getting stuck at a long table. See last year's GTG thread for stories on that one.
thereyet
I agree, the purpose is to get together. However, on the spicy note, I cannot eat spicy. I'm sure there will be others in the same position so we just need to make sure to order some dishes without hot peppers.

Ronda, I cannot eat spicy, but I can't recall a single place where you order a "hot" dish asking to prepare it "mild" and they refuse? Never!
Well I like the idea of putting up the screen and having a somewhat private area. But we will have to get everyone's vote because I know spicy can be an issue for people. I am in for anything. It's the company that counts!!
Whoa. So how many don't like spicy food? I seem to be hearing that a lot. Sure, a place can do something different, but honestly if a majority or even half don't like spicy, would we really pick a place that is FAMOUS for spicy food? If we order half our dishes prepared NOT in the usual way, does it make sense to go there? If half the group is vegetarian would we pick a steak house because they will prepare them something they can eat?
From Wikpedia: "Hunan cuisine is one of the eight regional cuisines of China and is well known for its hot spicy flavor, fresh aroma and deep color."
I'm not trying to be difficult here, just asking -- how many of those who are definitely going would prefer NOT to go to a place that features spicy foods?
I am in the "maybe's" and I can't eat spicy food, but don't let that stop everyone else, I come to GTGs to enjoy the company, I can survive on rice mixed with hot tea.
For non-spicy chinese food, I'd recommend R&G Lounge on Kearny Street.
Patrick, I don't mind to go to a spicy place, but I'll have to ask one plate to be mild, that's all. I don't see a reason not to go. After all, the main reason is to meet in person. Food is secondary.
So we've agreed on Henry's Hunan. Now, WHICH ONE? The website lists 4 locations:
924 Sansome
110 Natoma
674 Sacramento
1016 Bryant
Can we exclude Natoma and Bryant? Creepy locations in the evening, if I'm not mistaken. Sacramento opened till 5 pm only.
WE HAVE A WINNER!!
924 Sansome Street (between Broadway & Vallejo)
San Francisco, CA 94111

Henry's Hunan
ty
Looks like 11 to 17 people. Someone want to call -- maybe both places --and see about a couple tables together for that many? Maybe check out what Henry's says about ordering for a group if up to half don't like spicy? Clearly Henry's seems a lot cheaper if that makes a difference to anyone.
I love the idea of doing family style -- sharing wherever we go -- love the variety idea. These "dinner for __ people" deals are always so great at Asian restaurants if they have them, where you share a lot of dishes.
What time are we meeting? I have to plan it into our "busy" schedule -- LOL -- nothing at all planned that day, but I know some of you DO have to work!
Just looked at R&G's menu...hey it looks really good but I still prefer a little more down to earth rather then "fine dining".
Seriously, there are lots of non spicy dishes on the menu at Henry's. It is the kind of place where you can mingle and is perfect for "parties".
Just saying...
thereyet
I typically get off work a 7:00 so could be there by 7:30. Of course I could always leave a little early.
thereyet
Is Henry's a bigger place? Easier to "take over" an area than R&G? The only picture I saw of R&G looks kind of smaller and more "intimate"?

I'm leaning toward Henry's personally. I nominate thereyet to handle making the reservation. Everybody who can't eat spicy and gets stuck with it can throw an egg roll at thereyet.
Just called Henry's...

No problem with this sized party. The Round tables seat 8-12 people, they agreed that two of these tables next to one another with about 8 at each would be best. They agreed that if even half wanted non-spicy it would be no problem. Hey, you could have a spicy table and a non-spicy table!
What do you think?
thereyet
I like the idea of a spicy table and a non spicy table -- does that relate to the food or the people? I want the spicy table in either case!
I'll try to make it. We're flying up there that day so the next day we can see our Bruins get smashed by the Bears.
Henry's has a large dinning room, not huge, but just right IMO. Also it is not right on Broadway so it doesn't get a lot of walking by curiosity attention. So it tends to be patronized by those who know about it.
I have never seen it rowdy packed with people. I think they get crowded at lunch time mostly for the business lunch bunch.
Oh, and Neo, I would rather get hit with a Diana's special meat pie, then an egg roll any day. See appetizer menu.
And make that WITH peanut sauce, thank you.
thereyet
"I have never seen it rowdy packed with people.

So we should try to make it a first for them?
No problem, NP.
thereyet
OK, so Hunan it is, and I like the idea of 2 tables: spicy and non-spicy. Table #1 "fiery dragon" Table #2 "ulcer and such" LOL

Guys, we have not discussed who e-mails Katie for goodies. Unfortunately, I have a problem with getting UPS. Any volunteers?
I am good at "general managing"
Surfergirl, should I add you to "yes" or "maybe"? One or 2 persons?
OK, maybe we shouldn't get carried away with this spicy/non spicy table idea. Frankly I think some will like a variety and if there are some of each kind at each table I think we're better off than deciding all spicy or all non spicy and having to pick a table accordingly. And of course, I don't think they'll come smack our hands with a ruler if we pass a dish from one table to another either.
Henrys sounds good to me. I like somewhat spicey food.
Now, does anyone have any Hotel recommendations. Thanks.
Tom
Get the presidential suite at the Ritz and we will all come to your place for drinks after. OK?

When we get up to 200 replies, I'll start a new thread. Still 2 questions:
1) what time - is 7 pm OK? earlier? later? the earlier the better, more time for conversations
2) who can write to Katie for goodies? even if several people, better then none
Remind me to bring sticky paper so everybody can write down his/her name.
I'll write Katie...since we seem to "know" each other already.

I think 7:00 is a good time. I usually work till 7:00 and it takes about 30 minutes to get there.

I'll have to knock off a wee bit early don't ya think?
Oh, and get me off that fence sitter list.
thereyet
thereyet, you HAVE to come. Who would we throw food at if we don't like it?
Neo - I would but it's not available. Guess I'll just have to buy a round at dinner.
Tom
Mr. Trvlmaven will be there too (you'll know it's us--he's a Santa look-alike). He never passes up a chance to eat anywhere in Chinatown.
Cheers!
No, no, you have to put me on the "maybe" list! It's the one evening I'll be able to get my husband & son together for our traditional trip to Calzone's in North Beach, so I'll either be stopping in wherever this place is for a quick one, or my family will flake, in which case, I can do more than that.
However, after reading NP's and thereyet's comments on the SP board, we are very sympatico!
Where is this place???
Faina, like I told you dear one, put me down as a "maybe". I probably won't be able to eat any of the food except like Shangeneise (did I get that spelling right?) can eat but if it works out I will be there. I will report in closer to the date.
LoveItaly,
You have to come. You are one of the Fodorites I want to meet the most.
Tom
Oh Tom, I want to meet you too, you know that.
I may have a way to get into SF..I will keep in touch dear one.
BTW, do you have a hotel yet? And when will you be flying into SFO? Friday or Thursday?
No hotel yet, any suggestions? I am flying in on Thursday. I hope you can get a ride.
Tom
Henry's sounds perfect! It seems like a place where raucous laughter won't draw stares!
I'm still trying to decide where to stay as well. SInce I don't know much about the area, the address doesn't tell me much. Is it near Fisherman's Wharf? Are there any nice hotels within walking distance?
Ncounty, I looked at the hotel you mentioned but that was a little steep for me.
We haven't decided if we are flying or driving yet, since we may now have an extra day.
Hi Tom, according to our editor Katie, Fodor's is suppose to go down any moment. I will email you tomorrow. Hugs!
Here's the Mapquest image for the restaurant location:

You can click for hotels in the "category" space above it for "what's near". I did that and didn't recognize any of the hotels in that area.

whoa. how come I edited and got a double post? Is that a result of last night's maintenance?
LoveItaly, yes you have to come. We will find a way to get you home. If Janisj comes, that might work but I know we can get you back either way.
I think we should start before 7pm. Maybe 6:30 so we have plenty of time to visit. TY, we will save a space for you and make sure you are not stuck against the wall in the middle of a bunch of beautiful women (unless of course, you want that seating arrangement! LOL)
morning all. LoveItaly - I'd definitely be able to take you down and back IF I go. But my dates up at Tahoe aren't firm yet (and it might be semi-last minute)

So - if you and paula1470 or someone else can work out another option - go ahead. If not, I can be your fall back postition
Good morning dear Janisj, I had planned on asking you if you were able to attend the GTG if you would be willing to give me a ride, so thank you for your kind offer.
If you are not able to attend the GTG I will see what I can work out as I sure would love to attend. And not from a selfish reason but I hope you can attend as I know you would enjoy the GTG as they are a great group of Fodorite!
And good morning to you also Paula. Thank you also! But I live so far out of the way for you dear one.
I think the idea of meeting at 6:30pm is a very good idea as when looking at the website I noted they close at 9:30pm.
Anyway, there is time to see what can be worked out. Hope everyone is having a good week!
I checked the map Patrick posted. I didn't see any hotels in the area of the restaurant where I would want to stay. I think one should just plan on taking a taxi if they are going to be staying at a hotel. Personally I always stay at Union Square. Later I will check out some hotels I like and see if they have rooms available etc.

6.30 pm - I can be there at 6 pm I think as a "greeter" with the orange Fodor's bag so there is no confusion which table to go to
Give me a few minutes, I'll post transportation advice - from BART, etc...
If anybody is coming by BART (Tom?) from Embarcadero walk up 1 or 2 blocks to take bus line 10 that crosses Market at Front going north.
From Embarcadero Blvd - line 12 to Sansome, walk 1 or 2 blocks to the restaurant.
From Van Ness area - bus line 12 runs along Washington to cross Van Ness, go east to Sansome, you are by the restaurant.
From Fishermen's take line 10 going toward Embarcadero/Market, get off on Battery @ Broadway, walk 1 block up to Sansome.
All above bus lines should stop at Broadway, the restaurant is 924 Sansome between Broadway and Vallejo.
If you want to walk, take BART to Montgomery, exit to Sansome, walk over 9 blocks.
Anybody needs help? Like you need a pick-up not to get lost in the maze of SF traffic?
Also, if there is something you'd rather not post, drop a line faina22@hotmail.com
Ok, help me. Where is Fisherman's Wharf on that Map?
cat, on the mapquest link I gave, drag the map downward. Follow Embarcadero along the water to the top end of the area -- you'll see Pier 45 extending out into the water. That's Fisherman's Wharf. The Ferry Building is to the right and down a bit from the restaurant on the map. You'll see it marked as "ferry plz." between Pier 1 and Pier 2.
I should mention that apparently there are a number of conventions that week -- my preliminary checking was finding all hotel discounts, even AAA or senior gone from most hotels and some already fully sold out. Friday night may be a little clearer if conventions end on Friday.
Hi there Tom, here is the hotel I usually stay at located at Union Square. They do have available rooms for Thursday and Friday night (Oct. 23 and 24th). I did not check out the room rates however.
And I have not stayed at the Villa Florence since they remodeled and became owned by the Larkspur Group, they use to be part of the Kimpton Group. Location wise if one wants to stay at Union Square this hotel is perfect.

14 yes and 6 maybe YAY!
Ok, we booked a room at the Columbus, too, but I am still looking just in case.
Looks like now we will be driving up Friday and going home Sunday.
Shoot. I was just going to suggest that those of us in the vicinity could meet for breakfast at Mama's on Washington Square on Saturday. But we fly home on Saturday!
Patrick-We'll just have to have breakfast without you! Or you could change your flight (yeah, right!!)
What time, neo? Maybe an early brekkie?
No, not an option when I'm accompanied by the slowest eater in the world, and we need to worry about getting to the airport. But I highly recommend it for anyone else.
Oh, I would LOVE to do this GTG... that's my b-day, what a great way to celebrate...
But, I booked a wedding cake for the 25th about 3 weeks ago, so I will have to miss it. Have fun and have a b-day drink for me!
YAY! I am on the YES list!
thereyet
Well, for an ESL person it take two to explain the fence expression, shame on you all
Payton's Grandma, make an excuse and bring the wedding cake. We'll eat it!
NeoPatrick... that is an idea I'd love to consider. Maybe I'll deliver it on the 23rd & fly out that night... hmmmm....
I inquired with airline b/4 the ATL GTG about taking a cake and was told I couldn't carry it on. Had a suite & thought about making one while there, but decided it was a vacation away from cakes!!!
Have a feeling though, if we get to HI next spring, Matnikstym will make me do a cake for him while there.

Faina -- Is there a deadline that the maybe's need to convert to Yes's?
Hmmmmmm...
A GTG w/o Mrs Kal....
Hmmmmmm
I don't know about a cake, but Matnikstym better meet us at the airport with some of the luscious Macadamia Nut Chocolate Dipped Shortbread Cookies he sent me recently!!
sounds like a good crowd for the GTG in SF... wish I could be there.

would you possibly have room for a new fodorite?
i was being envious of a recent gtg in paris when loveitaly told me about this one.
i am coming over the golden gate bridge if anyone wants to car pool or needs a ride.
abranz,
Of course we can make room for you and welcome to Fodors.
I have been to 5-6 different GTG's in the last 3 years, mostly in Italy. And I had a blast at all of them. I look forward to meeting you.
Tom
Wow the list gets longer and longer. How exciting! LoveItaly, we will get you there one way or another. You need to see all the Fodorites you already know and meet all the new ones.
Faina - please put me down as a maybe. I'm going to try to make it, but not positive yet.
).
Janisj & LoveItaly - perhaps we can work out a carpool for the three of us if we all can go. If the Kals can go, we could have a party on the way down (my Durango will seat 7 - if Kal would drive, I'd let him join us.
I want to come to this GTG so badly it hurts. I don't know if I can get time off work since it's during our busy time of month and I know DH can't get away. But IF I can somehow make it for a long weekend, like 10/23 to 10/26, are there any decent prices on hotels that aren't in crack alley? The last time I was in SF we had to sell a kidney just to afford a room.
P_M - I believe Patrick said he got a $120 rate at the Columbus Motor Inn. It was a AAA rate. It might be worth checking out.
Thanks toed, that place does look pretty decent for the price. I need to check the schedule at work, I really hope this is doable.
Unfortunately I'm still in the "maybe" camp
P_M: I got the Hyatt Embarcadero for last weekend on priceline for $105 plus tax/fees ($122 total). Got an amazing view room w/o even paying for an upgrade.
Worth a try (PL has new zones for SF so be sure check before bidding)
Hi toedtoes, oh what fun it would be if you could make it! I assumed with work that it wouldn't be possible. Janis and you, well the Kal's too all live in the same area.
P_M..if you can make it..fantastic! I will keep my fingers crossed!
Hello abranz! I am so glad you saw my post to you on the Paris GTG. I was enjoying reading that thread when I saw your comment about wishing there would be a SF GTG sometime..good timing on your part!
You will enjoy meeting all the Fodorite's..they are a wonderful group of people and everyone will be happy to meet you.
Paula dear..well hopefully I will be there without you or anyone going out of their way. Thank you for always being such a good friend.
Faina, looks like this will be the biggest SF GTG ever!
Hi Tom, have you reserved a hotel in SF yet? If toedtoes can be at the GTG you two will have a lot in common as she loves photography also and is quite talented as you are..do bring your camera dear one!
hi loveitaly,
thanks for the tip on the s.f. gtg. you're right about my timing must have been my 6th sense.
tom,
thanks for the welcome. from all the posts that i have read it sounds like a fun evening.
looking forward to meeting everyone.
Definitely shaping up to be a three table party...do I hear a call for four?
Woooohoooo!
Welcome abranz. I think you are in for a great time.
NeoP, are you getting excited yet?

<<I thought ThereYet called them and made reservations, no?>>
Faina, I called and talked to them already, they just want me to get back to them when we have a better idea as to how many.
There will be no problems I was assured. I figure I will call them back the week of. No?
thereyet
About checks, don't we think we can just do checks for each table? Being family style it seems best.

We could have a contest for the biggest bill!
thereyet
Just a comment about paying, bring cash. Somehow it gets all figured out. If everyone keeps track of what they ordered, drinks and food, add in the tax (is it around 15% thereyet?) and adds in the 20% tip and pays in cash that is as easy as it gets. Seperate checks will not be given out I am sure. If each one brings a sheet of paper and pen to keep track of their order that is always a good idea. Sounds like a large but really fun group!
And what time are we meeting? The restaurant closes at 9:30pm if I remember correctly so we don't want to meet too late I would think.

Bruce, I don't think we have to make reservations so far in advance. The week of the GTG, Mon or Tue will be fine. And then, a small adjustment with confirmation on Friday morning. I'm sure you know, you just need a woman to guide you
To pay - yes, please everybody bring small bills. And I think food will be shared and divided, as for drinks, let's make it one or 2 drinks minimum, so we can easily share the cost.
It will get annoying and uncomfortable if everybody will try to calculate how much they've ordered. Happened before. Doesn't look nice when somebody walks from chair to chair marking off a chart.
By the way, I don't eat certain foods, and don't drink much, but I don't mind to pay like 1/8 at a table of 8, for example.
I don't think the restaurant will agree to issue separate checks for everyone, but one check per table should not be a problem if we tell them when we place our orders.
Hi Faina, if I am there I will not be able to eat anything except a bowl of rice if they have it (due to my food allergies) BUT I will have wine instead of food LOL (won't be driving of course). I am very happy to pay my percentage of the total bill for the table (1/8 of a table of eight).
One small question. Since Lee doesn't drink anything, and I'm paying for two, does that mean I get FOUR drinks? Hooray! Can someone carry me out?
And why are you the one who gets 4 drinks?

Oh, well, it's only a suggestion, I'll go with the flow... anybody who'll keep the score
Hey Patrick, toedtoes doesn't drink any kind of liquor so maybe she will let me drink her share, you think?
Speaking of toedtoes, she is a vegetarian, I hope there will be some dishes she can eat. And I remember Shangainese posted she would only be able to eat a bowl of rice and some tea.
So some that is something to keep in mind Faina.
People, don't expect me to walk around with a note-pad writing down who ordered what.

We must decide now what to do so there will be no hard feelings.
I am not carving it in stone to divide the total. Only asking how to pay the check as I assume they will not write personal checks.
I know I don't remember what it was and how much at the end of a meal, besides this is a "family style" - food to share.
Meeting at my house is not an option either
OK. Just a thought.

Maybe instead of a table with hot dishes, another with mild dishes, we have a table to share the payments, and a table with individual checks?
How do they manage at other GTGs?
I've been to: 1)potlucks, 2)share the cost equally, and 3)everybody pays for himself.
Hi Faina, I think or rather know the "confusion" with this GTG is the fact that the food is served family style rather than each person ordering what they want to eat as we have always done in the past.
And in that some will not be able to eat any or all the dishes for various reasons that causes more confusion.
Personally dear friend I do not have a problem paying my share percentage wise (as 1/8 of the cost at a table for 8) even though I cannot eat the food, but I sure can't speak for others of course.
I suggest that regarding the drinks, some will order alcohol, some just tea or a softdrink and that each person keep track of what drinks they ordered (does the menu include the price for wines, drinks, sodas, tea etc) and pay in cash for their individual drinks plus tax and tip of course. And, no doubt pots of tea will be put on the table?
I will probably drink more wine than normal since I can't eat, lol.
This is a new exprience for us, having a family style dinner. I hope others will chime in with some good suggestions. It does seem a bit confusing.
thereyet-How does the family style work? I would assume that each table can order an assortment of dishes so that everyone is happy at each table. Some hot, some mild, some vegetarian and others with fish or meat. If's that the case then I think we could divide evenly and keep track of extra drinks as LoveItaly suggested. Or is there going to be a set menu? Hopefully there will be some options in ordering.
LoveItaly-Can you eat rice?
If there is someone at a table who really doesn't eat anything, then just count them out when the check is divided. Those people can pay for their drinks (extra wine!!).
I've been to dozens of these "family style" dinners and there is very rarely a problem. You divide the total bill for the table evenly including tip and tax and everybody puts in that amount. If someone wants to say "I had three expensive drinks, then fine -- that person can throw in extra money. And if someone says "I didn't eat food, only an eggroll and a glass of tap water", well -- perhaps they can take some of that extra. Or if they really had that extreme of "nothing", perhaps that table divides by one less person and that person just throws in the couple dollars worth they had -- which can go to the server who will have probably earned it taking care of the crowd.
But to be perfectly blunt, it sounds like a pretty darned inexpensive place and if someone is worried their share is just going to be too much for them -- well, maybe they need to reconsider going?
I'd like to think with a bunch of sophisticated travelers, this should not be any issue at all. Everyone just needs to consider it a group dinner. Surely when you pay a set price for a party or banquet, you aren't going to sit around and want money back because you didn't eat your dessert and someone else did. Big deal. Just divide it all out evenly.
If there is a really a concern about a big difference in bar bills, perhaps the restaurant will do separate food and bar bills for each table. Then people can chip in clearly their cost (including tax and tip for their own drinks) and divide out the food evenly.
"Meeting at my house is not an option either"

Oh c'mon Faina. You could cook for everyone then there would be no dispute about the bill. You see, the solution is so simple.
"I'd like to think with a bunch of sophisticated travelers, this should not be any issue at all." - I hope so too!
Family style - everybody gets a clean plate, and whatever food is ordered - it goes in the middle of the table for everybody to take some.
Patrick-I'm with you. It shouldn't be that difficult and not that expensive. After all "Fodor's GTGs" - Priceless!!
Well, if you really didn't want me to go, you could have just said so! But to go through all this effort to tell me I'm CHEAP!!
When Faina wrote "a minimum drink order", I did feel my pocketbook go into convulsions... I mean, some of you folks can pack in that liquor!!
Personally, I prefer the idea of splitting the food evenly between those who eat (donations from non-eaters welcome) and everyone add in for their drinks. It's pretty easy to add up drinks - if I have 3 sodas, it's going to run between $5 and $10; if I have 10 sour toe cocktails, it's going to cost me about $50 to $75 (depending on whether you get the big toe or not).
If we do split the cost including drinks, will I be held liable when Faina gets drunk and starts flashing the other patrons?? It could be an expensive lawsuit. I'm just sayin'.........
I've been at parties where alcoholic drinks are pay as you go - waiter brings drink, you pay. Simple. Cash is easiest.
When we have family style Chinese meals, we go around the table and each person picks one dish to order that way there is sure to be something each person likes (plus rice and tea). Dad picks Sweet and Sour Pork which I don't like, so I don't take any. If there is any left after it has been around, we pass it over to Dad to finish up. Kids only like Chicken Cashew so we pass the dish over to them to divide. Everything works out. I'm one of those that can't eat hot and spicy so I'm sure there will be others and we just won't order a spicy dish when it is our turn. It isn't always the dinner I would pick if I were in charge but I never go hungry and I never have to eat just plain white rice.
Just a reminder, you should bring cash because I'm sure the waiter will not want to split a bill 8 ways and bring 8 credit card receipts per table. Or the person who forgot cash collects cash from the others for their portion and then pays the entire tab with his credit card.
It will be fun! I haven't been to one of these GTG's yet and I'm looking forward to meeting you all and putting a face with a name!
Okay, Trippin here has been lurking. Where is the event and what time on Friday? I'm not sure if I can make a Friday evening, since I'm due to start a new contract job next week and not certain of my hours. I'd be coming from San Jose, using VTA buses and CalTrain (I don't drive.) Cost is an issue with me unfortunately, and I'm not drinking these days. ;-(
trippinkpj-I think this will be an inexpensive dinner and of course no one is going to force you to drink although I had my arm twisted a couple of times. LOL
I am not sure if we decided on a time. I suggested 6:30 and I think Faina said she might be there a little earlier than that so not really sure.
I think there is a couple of people coming to the GTG who live in your area so maybe you could get a ride. I don't want to speak for them but I can send them an email and see what they say.
We'd love to have you there.

We should aim for 6.30 as we'll have only 3 hours till they close at 9.30.
YAY!! We have over 200 posts! LOL
I like the idea of splitting it 1/8 for 8 people per table. But like I kind of joked earlier, but now I am serious, the first round of drinks is on me. And this is for the whole group. It will be a toast to Diablo and my honor. Besides, Tuscan told me to enjoy the money.
I mean you folks have been so nice to me and helped me plan my trips over the last 3 years its the least I can do.
And speaking of enjoying the money and to answer LoveItaly's qyestion. Yes I have booked my hotel. I am staying at the Ritz- Carlton in a Jr Suite.
I look forward to what, with out a doubt, will be a memorable evening.
Tom
Patrick - if you can find a credit card in my purse, have at it!
Meanwhile, I've got a call into my company's "employee assistance program" to find out my liability in regards to Faina's drunken celebration plans...
No one should worry about the bill. This is not an expensive joint.

You can find parking on the street if you're good.
Aside from cocktails, bottles of wine and six packs of Tsing Tao can be put on the table. There will be plenty of tea.
Of course I won't firm up the Rez until the week of, but feel free to shoot me any questions and I will give them a call.
Those that only eat rice and drink tea shouldn't pay anything, though I empathize with you.
I don't think they are going to kick us out at 9:30. I have never heard of such a thing. We will be their biggest customers of the night. That being said, when you catch them looking at their watches, best to get going.

Thanks NeoP for making this a real occasion!

thereyet - Lets see how we survive dinner first, then maybe a night cap. I look forward to talking music with you.
Leey2 - No worries about the $$$, the settlement was HUGE!!!! Besides, I have always wanted try 'puttin on the Ritz.'
Tom
Thanks Paula and Faina. I will see how things go, and see if anyone from San Jose posts with a ride offer.
Oh, and by the way, I will have my camera with me. So do behave or I will post all the embarassing photos all over the internet
I can't wait for this. It is going to be a blast!!
Tom
Tom, I'll bring the pocket collection...160gb Ipod vid so you can browse.
You can do the same?
thereyet
<<So did we decide on 6:30 or earlier?>>
Hi Paula, that sounds good but will need to know when i call again.
There is a nice little lounge up front for those who want to get there early.
thereyet
"Faina's drunken celebration plans..." - yes, and I will make you to participate

"do behave or I will post all the embarassing photos all over the internet" - hey, don't kill our fun! we all love embarassing pictures
So... who can get in at what time? I work till 5, can be there at 5.30
Is 6.30 too early for anybody?
I'm soo excited!
Faina -- could you please change me from Maybe to Yes, my good friend visiting from overseas can only meet for a quick afternoon tea.
LoveItaly and thereyet -- you think I can survive on rice and tea? Those were the times when I was living in China, malnourished and under 100 lbs. I'll consume anything edible once in my life as long as it's mild and not spicy, there are enough of them can choose from at the restaurant.
Thanks to Faina for passing the 200 mark, and can't wait to meet everyone!

WAIT A MOMENT!!
We need a volunteer to get goodies from Katie. Sorry I can't, UPS problems - can't have delivery at work.
Hi All,
From Google maps Street view, there appears to be a large Public Parking garage right next door
to Henry's. As you face the restaurant, pan to the right
along the street and you will see it. If you pan to the left, you will see a ramp and a parking pad-don't know if this is owned by Henry's or not.
R5
Razzles, are you coming? I'd love to see you again!
there are 2 parking places on sansome not far from henry hunans.
there are also assorted lots on montgomery and broadway.
of course if you can find street parking, you have hit the jackpot!
Hi Faina, normally I would be glad to have Katie send me the goodies as she has done at least once in the past but since at this point I don't know if I will be joining all of you or not..well that wouldn't be a good idea.
thereyet said he would write Katie back on the 22nd.
Tom

Done! We will see, what will be, in the way of free, from Katie!

Hi all, I will know for sure on the 16th. Will have results on a medical issue.

I walked by Henry's Hunan yesterday. Betty at reception said there is plenty of street parking in the evening as it is a business district and everyone leaves after work. There were plenty of garages but don't know if they were monthly only.
Thank you, Ronda, this is very helpful for many attending drivers!

I volunteer to be the designated drunk
Oh, wait, I can't compete with Kal
Katie, our gracious editor, will be sending the truck with all the trick or treats for our wonderful gathering.

thereyet,
Thank you for taking care of getting the goodie train a rollin'. And thank you Katie for sending said goodies.
Tom
P_M, are you able to take off of work?

I'm working on it, too. Since OSU will be in Austin that weekend we have an opening.....
Are we welcoming out-of-towners now?

Well....

... it turns out I'm going to be visiting my parents in the LA area that week.
Wonder how they'd feel if I skipped dinner with them one night?
BeachGirl, I'm still not sure if I can make it, I'll know in another day or so.

swisshiker, you can sneak away for one night.
Need you to be a little more specific...what kind of food do you like? Want casual? or really fancy ? For casual-there is a little "hole in the wall" Cuban restaurant called Laurel about six blocks from the symphony hall and it is great fun...need reservations since it is so small....if you go...try the vaca frita(fried cow)..they do a good job.
swisshiker-Yes do come up for the day/night. That's what I am doing and so is Cat. So we can have a mini South Bay GTG in the midst of the bigger SF GTG!!
nana5-Did you post this on the wrong thread?
P_M, BeachGirl and swisshiker,
I really hope the three of you can make it. It sures sounds like we are going to have a great group and time!!
If for no other reason, do it for Diablo. I know, a cheap ploy pulling at your heartstrings, but it would be great to meet each of you. Also, remember, the first round is on me.
Tom
Sorry to report that due to medical reasons I will not be able to attend. I sincerely wish you all a grand time and I hope our paths cross one day soon.

WARNING TO ALL SAN FRANCISCANS

The eyes of Texas are upon you...
P_M is coming to town!!
Faina, sign me up baby!!
Heaven help us one and all!!!

Yeah P_M is coming to California. Don't you live in San Antonio? I went to college there at Trinity--many, many years ago. But was in SA in Feb of this year for a convention. Got to see some of my old stomping grounds. I usually get back about every 5 years or so as I have some college friends there.
Hi Paula. You're close, I live in Austin. Come for another visit soon, we often combine Austin/SA for GTGs.
Paula, I can't find your email address you gave me when I was out there.

I'd like to hear how/when you and Cat are heading up/back.
Email me at my screen name at yahoo, pretty please
P_M,
Glad to hear it. If we keep it up maybe we will have the whole place to ourselves.
Tom
Hi there Tom, I was thinking the same thing! It will be the biggest SF GTG ever!
Yes I think this may be the biggest GTG ever. Certainly the biggest I have been to in SF! How exciting.
Hi guys,
I posted a thread about my plans Saturday night, please join me if you can. If you have any other Saturday plans you would like to share you are welcome to post on the thread below.
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=1&tid=35161621
We just got back from a 3 week vacation (Paris) - so I'm catching up.
Hunan Restaurant
Friday the 24th
6:30
Is this the plan?
I think this is the same restaurant that used to be on Kearny in the 70s, and has the hottest food I've ever tasted. We used to go there for lunch & order the Harvest Pork & a beer. I never drank the beer - just hung my lips in it to cool off the inside of my mouth. Once I took an out-of-towner there & his entire head broke out in a massive sweat - but he loved the food.
My wife will be in Indianapolis visiting her father then - so I'll be there by myself.
See ya Friday
Stu Dudley
Stu-Glad you are coming. We had just about convinced all those that don't like spicy that there are some dishes that were mild. Hope you didn't scare them all away!! We will have some people just eating rice and drinking wine. But it's all about the company.
Stu, maybe you missed the "hot food" discussion, but thereyet has assured us that it isn't a problem there. If he is wrong -- we are holding him down and pouring hot pepper sauce full strength into his mouth!
As I recall (from over 30 years ago), there were many "mild" choices on the menu - you just had to know which ones they were. Back then, I'm not sure they were "noted" on the menu.
Most Asian restaurants can adjust the "hotness" of the dish - except if they are preparing the same dish in the wok for 6 people, this adjustment may be hard to control.
I always look for a small red pepper in the food, and I'll remove it just to make sure I don't bite into fire.
Stu Dudley
<<Stu, maybe you missed the "hot food" discussion, but thereyet has assured us that it isn't a problem there. If he is wrong -- we are holding him down and pouring hot pepper sauce full strength into his mouth!
>>
Trying to get me in trouble again. There are TONS of regular dishes on the menu and of course the spicy ones are well marked and for sure you can request whatever heat you want......:-"
, but reading your description is making me hungry.

Damn Stu!
I am not
Nothing to worry about, I promise.

Ok please don't hate me for this you guys, but I have to cancel for the GTG.
But I have a really good reason. And it is travel related. I am going to London to see the Chargers play the Saints at Wembley Stadium. Best of all, it's FREE!!!
My best friend since we were kids, won a raffle of a package for two that includes air, hotel and game tickets. And he invited me as his guest!!
I was looking forward to meeting all of you, but how can I turn down 4 free nights in London (a city I have never been too)?
I know all of you will still have a great time even without me there. So please, somebody be sure to take pictures and post them here.
Again, I am sorry to cancel.
Tom
Oh Tom!!! Well I am so dissapointed you won't be here but on the other hand I am so excited for you that you have this wonderful oppotunity. What a great friend! And in that you have not yet been to London..fantastic! You take lots of photos to share with us too dear one. Wishing you a fun time and of course it will be I am sure. We will see you when you do your driving tour of the US, yes?
LoveItaly - Yes you will see me during the driving tour.
As for my friend Mike. He is like the brother I never had. We have known each other since the age of 12. I was his best man and I am Godfather to his 3 children.
So I will take plenty of pictures of London and post them here.
Tom
No. This is unnacceptable.

The only way you are allowed to cancel is if you get all of us a free 4-night stay in London.
I mean fair's fair.
Tom, that's too bad for us!

Meanwhile, is that Ritz Jr. Suite prepaid? Did you need someone to take it over for you?

That's exciting news Tom, I'm sure you will enjoy your trip.
Paula and Patrick, (or anyone else) are you still up for the boat ride Friday afternoon? I'm still going, and if you want to join me, please let me know what time works for you.
We are up for it. Any time between say 10 AM and time to get to the GTG. We're flexible.
Hi Patrick. OK, I'm jumping back to the other thread and it looks like we decided on the Red and White cruises? Here's the schedule:
http://www.redandwhite.com/cruise_schedule.asp
Now here's my situation. If all goes as planned I will be arriving into SFO at 10am. I'm thinking I can do either the 1:15 or the 1:45 cruise and we will still have time to get back to the hotel and get ready for the GTG. I know Paula wants to join in and she was going to try to get an earlier flight but I don't know yet when she will get to town. Can we tentatively plan 1:15 or 1:45 and firm it up after hearing from Paula?
If you would care to exchange info please drop me a line at thegreatpumpkin24 at yahoo.com.
There is mail in the great pumpkin patch!
Hi guys just got back in from a day in the field. It looks like the best I can do is to get to Oakland about 12:30 -my flight before got me in around 2pm.
So obviously wouldn't make the 1:15 and 1:45 is pushing it. Would the 2:30 be too late? I really would like to go with you guys but I have to drop my dogs off at the boarding kennel Thurs morning and then I have an hour drive to the airport.
Maybe you all could have lunch and then I can meet you. I am taking BART from Oakland airport which I have never done before so I need to look into how long that takes.
I also will have a small bag with me so will have to figure out what to do with that. Guess I could take it on the boat if necessary.
I have to run out again but I will do a little more research when I get home in a few hours.
Hi Paula, here is the official BART website.
http://www.bart.gov/
BTW Paula, when you check the Schedule you will be taking the Freemont/Daly City BART from the Oakland Airport. There is the shuttle bus to take you from the Airport to the BART station.
Paula, 2:30 will work. We'll meet at Fisherman's Wharf and you have my cell # if you need it.
Hey guys, one last post then I must log off for the evening.
Tom wanted the first toast to be for Diablo. Tom won't be there, but I say we should still toast Diablo's memory as well as Tom's recovery. How about it?
great lineup. I'll look forward to the photos.
Paula, makes sure you have small bills for the shuttle and BART. BART you can use CC and maybe debit, but for sure you need cash for the shuttle. If I recall correctly it is like three bucks.
From Oakland airport to Embarcadero is about 45-50 minutes if you don't find yourself having to wait to long at the airport or the Coliseum BART station. Maximum wait at either place would be about ten minutes.
thereyet
And Paula, when you get off at the Embarcadero BART Station walk west toward the Ferry Building. You can catch the F Line, the historical street cars, to get to Pier 43 1/2. The F Line goes north on the Emcarcadero and than turns west at Fisherman's Wharf. The piers going north from the Ferry Bldg are the uneven numbers. Pier 43 1/2 will be past Pier 39 consequently.
You guys are great. I don't even have to do my research about BART. That's why I love Fodors.
I hope 2:30 is OK for Patrick.
Tom, I am sorry you won't be in SF. I was looking forward to meeting you. We will definitely have a toast for Diablo. Go Chargers!!
Paula, when you leave the Terminal, cross the first few lanes of traffic to the center island and look for the sign for BART shuttle, it is on the side of the parking lot which you will be facing.
thereyet
Paula:

Patrick and I were chatting on the email last night, he said 2:30 is OK. See ya then.
LoveItaly, don't you mean "east toward the Ferry Bldg"?
dmlove-Yes I think it's east although I would have to look at the map but I know where the station is in relation to everything else so I'm good.
If I am running a little late, I will just grab a taxi to Fisherman's Wharf. It's going to very strange to be in SF without a car.
LoveItaly, Let me know as soon as you hear from Toedtoes. I may be renting a car after all!!
Paula, at OAK look for signs to AirBART - it's a bus to BART $3, the ride is about 1/2 hour, the wait for the bus may be 10-15'.
From Embarcadero BART you can take the street car F, it stops at pier 43.
Can I meet you somewhere to get your bag to keep it at work till dinner?
This is the link to MUNI map
http://transit.511.org/static/providers/maps/SF_712200711012.pdf
And about BART: you can take any train that says SF, SFO, Daly City, Millbrae - they all go through San Francisco (don't confuse yourself with "Fremont" it will take you the wrong way!!)
Hello Faina, put me under the YES list and quite soon toedtoes or I will respond regarding what her status is, probably in the next day or two!
I won't know for sure until next Monday night - after my boss comes back from vacation. It will all depend on if any "emergencies" crop up during this week while she's gone...
WoooooHooooo, this is going to be fun. Poor Tom doesn't know what he is going to be missing....but I understand, I will leave my Ipod at home as no one else will be interested.
thereyet
Oh and Tom, see if you can scrounge up some real Footy ducats while you are there.
Now THAT would be fun!
ty
Thereyet - if you'd put some quality Canadian music on that there iPod, I might be interested...
(and quality does NOT equal Shania, Celine, or Alanis)
Tt, well give me some hints and I will get busy.
thereyet
thereyet,
Please explain/describe Footy ducats. I have never been to London and have no clue what you are talking about.
Tom
Toadtoes, I just found this cool site. Do you know any of these groups?
Go to list...then artists.
thereyet
T, Footy Ducats = soccer tickets.

Footy is a common term for soccer in GB.
Ducats from the urban dictionary...
3. ducat
Ancient word for a gold coin, originating from Venice,1284 AD. Still used in some languages..(Serbian, Croatian...)
Also, an admission ticket.
thereyet
Tom, you are going to LOVE London, and you are going to WISH you had more then four days there.

Me? I could spend a month there.
thereyet
<<Toadtoes, I just found this cool site. Do you know any of these groups?

What website?
Hint:
Basically, if they aren't signed on by a major US record label, you can bet they're quality Canadian.
Obvious Answer:
Look up maplemusic.com and you'll find a lot of good ones.
Try Starling, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Stephen Fearing, Tom Wilson, Gordie Sampson, Joel Kroeker, Lynn Miles for a start. Those are some of my favorites (on maplemusic).
Oh sorry, check this.

thereyet,
Thank you for the heads up on 'football' tickets! And yes, I really do know what I will be missing next Friday night in San Francisco! There are so many of you I have wanted to meet for a long time. Maybe we can put together a GTG next fall when I do my driving tour of the US?
But can you blame a person for not turning down four FREE nights in London? That added with the fact that I will be seeing my favorite 'US Football' team play in London!!
I know that all of you will have a great time next Friday. So toast Diablo and I will toast all of you while I am London.
Tom
Of course we can have a GTG when you are "on the road again".
thereyet
Oh, and this makes 300 posts on Faina fabulous thread.
thereyet
Tom, I'm sorry you won't be there but we wiull definitely be toasting Diablo, and you having a great time in London.
I'm confused, though. Is it still at 6:30? Is there a pre GTG for lunch? We are driving up Friday morning so either way, we will be there!
cat, there's not a pre-GTG lunch that I know of, but Patrick, Lee, Paula and maybe LoveItaly will be taking a boat ride around the harbor at 2:30. We're meeting at Fisherman's Wharf if you would like to join us.

Hello all! I am a new Fodorite having been invited by a friend to post in her Paris Trip. Just happened to see this GTG in San Francisco but would like to join so I can meet some Fodorites in the Bay Area. Sounds like a fun group!
Please put me in the maybe section for now as I am on a conference all week next week, ending hopefully in the early afternoon on Friday. There might be a chance that I will be exhausted but I will know for sure by Friday morning how I'm holding up.
Looking forward to meeting you all!

My boss will be back on Monday, so I'll know for sure if I can get any time off, but I'm thinking that I might get more leverage for taking the full day if I were going on a cruise in the Bay also, instead of just going for dinner...
Toed, the weather is great these days, you'll love the cruise!
Great idea toed, it will be so much fun to have you and LoveItaly on the cruise with us.
SO may not make it, but I will be there regardless. And I'd love the cruise.

Shanghainese is correct...but there is a connector I205 from I5 to I580. Then just follow the signs to SF. Stay on the right when exiting the bridge and follow the signs to Embarcadero, go left on Embarcadero a few blocks to Broadway. Just at the top of the short hill, you will go right onto Samsome....park it. The Resto is on the right up on the corner.

Hi Faina: I tried to e-mail you but when I tried to send it wouldn't work. Would you please e-mail me the details of the GTG? LoveItaly told me on another thread to check it out and try to come. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Giovanna.
giovannatravels@yahoo.com
Hi Giovanna, I don't know for sure if Faina has her computer at home hooked up yet so I will give you the information.
The GTG will be this coming Friday evening Oct. 24th.
Here is the website where the GTG will be held.
http://henryshunanrestaurant.com/
Oh I hope you two can join us, that would be wonderful!
The time is 6:30pm but I think I and Toedtoes will try to get there around 6:00pm to be in the Lounge to greet early arrivals as thereyet probably won't be able to make it before 7:00pm I believe due to work.
Giovanna please email if you have any questions. Keeping my fingers crossed we will see you two!
I suggest just dropping DH off at the door then find parking, then the reverse for the return home.
I will be looking for parking in the neighborhood myself. I seem to get lucky even if it means a couple of blocks walk. It is mainly a business neighborhood so much of the parking frees up after the workday is over.
thereyet
cat, if you want to go to the Red and white fleet, just continue on Embarcadero till you pass Pier thirty nine. There is a parking lot just past the Pier 39 on the right. I believe this is where the ferry is for the cruise.
If I am wrong, some one is sure to correct me.

HELLO FODORITES!
This is my first posting though I’ve been learning a lot from your helpful travel tips for our last few trips. Yesterday we were in the city for a tennis double tournament and we decided to have a quick bite afterwards. I quickly suggested Henry Hunan as I had been reading about it on this thread and will not be able to join the GTG next week. Since you all have been kind and generous with your travel tips, I thought I should share our experience as a preview to those who’s never been there. Warning: it’s good & bad, but hopefully my report will help you avoid the bad.
OUR BACKGROUND:
We eat in San Francisco two to three times a month but mostly French, Italian or Japanese, we hardly eat Chinese in the city because we absolutely don’t know where to go. Our AA dining mileage once led us to a large but charming restaurant inside Chinatown called Four Seasons which was enjoyable. Before that, we did eat at a great chinese restaurant on Geary called Ton Kiang about 10-15 years ago, but it’s no longer there. From time to time, we do eat chinese food in the suburbs around San Francisco. .
THE PARKING
We couldn’t find any street parking within 2 blocks from the restaurant so we decided to pay the $10 parking flat fee at the very convenient public parking that was practically next door to the restaurant.
THE PLACE:
As we entered the restaurant, I could understand why you all picked this place: there is an empty bar with square dining tables upfront and an empty private dining room for 45 people all the way in the back while the main dining hall is spacious and empty. Any of those two private areas would be perfect for a big group. However, we weren’t impressed by the black grouted grey tiled flooring or the black grime covered red carpet islands where the tables were grouped together. On the wall, we saw colorful glowing neon lights spelling Chinatown and Tsing Tao beer along with framed pictures of the various food dishes that they serve. We were worried about getting a table without reservation, but it turned out that there were only 11 diners in the main dining hall with about 30 something formica tables at 7pm. The owner took our order and the bus boy slash waiter efficiently brought the food to our table.
THE APPETIZER:
We were so hungry that we instantly devoured the much recommended Diana’s meatpie which came to our table within 5 minutes after we ordered. It’s really a large crispy sandwich of two thin pancakes filled with some sticky taco meat filler with subtle chinese indian herbs and julienned greens. We were glad that we took the lady owner’s advice on her ‘must try’ appetizer recommendation, it was simply delicious!
THE MAIN COURSE:
It took about 10 minutes for our “must try” smoked ham with string beans to come to our table. Much to our disappointment, the string beans appeared limp, overcooked and oily, I’m talking about dripping sticky oily. What we were not prepared for was the taste. There was a strange diesel petrol smell in this particular dish. We all gave up on that dish and hoped to God that our second ‘must try’ dish, would be better. Well the Hunan velvet chicken gave out the same diesel smell, so we concluded that it must have come from the oil, maybe they accidentally spilled something. I’m sure they won’t be using the same oil next week when you all get there. We reached for the hot tea to cut the nauseating smell and oily taste before we paid and left the restaurant. We all agreed that the best food we had was the bowl of steamrice beside the meatpie appetizer.
LOL, how very nice of you to post Midpeninsular especially since this is your ONE AND ONLY post on Fodor's under your new screen name.
I was wondering when you would chime in to make a comment or two about our GTG.
What an odd post. Oh well.
Paula, now that Mr. Kat is likely not going, I think I amy fly up I can still get Jet Blue for a decent price, and as I will now onnly stay one night, its a wash cost wise. Are you flying out of San Diego? There is a light that will get me to Oak around 12:20. Could we meet up and take the Bart together?
Lovely post MP. I do agree the Diana's meat pie is great. Did you try it with their peanut sauce? That is really the way to have it.
cat, I will miss meeting Mr. cat, but you will be sooo much more refreshed for having flown. See above for BART directions from Oakland to SF.
ty
Hi cat! I am glad to see that you are flying instead of driving. That is a long drive especially since you will be on your own. We sure look forward to seeing you again!
Yeah cat, now you will have time for some shopping...for shoes!
thereyet
Gosh, who WAS that, LoveItaly?
I sure wish I could be there. Looking forward to the report.
Hello ncounty, I wish you could be with us also! It will be a fun evening. Regarding your question, I don't wish to answer it here dear one.
ncounty, there ares still seats left on my flight. COme on! You can do it!!!
I am so excited, and while I will love for you all to meet Mr. Kat, he is doing the right thing, as it is his twins' b-day Friday night.
And thereyet, I am sorry to say, after bringing two pairs of boots back from Paris, I must swear off any shoe stores. (We won't be near that Cole Haan store anyways, right?)
Lovie, you are so cute. I really wouldn't have minded the drive. Sometimes driving is the only time I get to myself! But this will be easier, and I can get back in time for DD's soccer game on Saturday now.
See you all very soon!
I AM going to try to make it as well. There are decent fares on United; I just have to check my work schedule that morning and see if I am already booked or not. Faina- please put me on the maybe list for now,
.
Oh ncounty, if you can that would be wonderful! Will you bring your son? I always love reading about him he sounds so delightful.
Cat, no shoe shopping for me either. I do understand about driving and having time alone..I use to feel that way also, lol. Turn on the music and just GO.
Chuckling, LoveItaly, my son is a quiet hoot....did you ever read the restaurant review he wrote that I posted? I sent it to the restaurant (which has been listed as Fodor's top ten in the world!) and the owner finally saw my son's comments and I was notified that they want him to come in for a VIP experience.
.
Unfortunately, he will be in school that day and won't be with me....but that will free me up to live it up in SF! I am working hard on trying to make it,
Yes ncounty, I sure do remember your son's restaurant review!
I wasn't thinking..of course he has school on Friday. Well please tell him one of these days I would love to meet him.
ncounty, I hope you and everyone else on the "maybe" list can come. I don't get out to SF very often so I want to meet as many Fodorites as possible.
I am sooo looking forward to meeting you guys....I promise, if I am not booked to work that day, I'll be there.
OK - its time to fish or cut bait.
I've been trying to work out a complicated situation involving Tahoe, Sacramento and SF this week and next. Kept thinking I could do it all - but the details are still up in the air.
Things could still change tho'.

Sooooo - move me from the "maybe" list to "probably not".
If I'm not at Incline Friday night, I'll try to stop by the restaurant - don't count me for dinner. I can just drop in and schmooze and watch you all eat. If I am up at Incline - I'll be toasting y'all w/ free margaritas at the Hacienda
midpeninsula,
ton kiang is still there on geary. it is my favourite place for dim sum.
my only regret is that i don't eat there often enough.
Dang it janisj, I wanted to personally thank you for whacking me upside the head a couple of times when planning that London/Spain trip.
thereyet
Unfortunately, I have gone from a Yes to a No. We have to go out of town to attend a memorial service of a close friend next weekend. I will miss meeting you all.
LOL, did I overstep an inner circle boundary to deserve your sarcasm Loveitaly? My sincere apologies if commenting is reserved only for senior Fodorites. I thought this board is about sharing personal experience to help others.
I only wrote about our spotty experience because we were so impressed by E Tutto Qua where the previous March GTG was held so we had assumed Henry Hunan would be another Fodorite secret gem. Henry Hunan might have been great at one time but must have declined ever since judging from the serious lack of customers and dirty appearance. To highlight the positive again, the meat pie was enjoyable even without the peanut sauce which they apparently forgot to serve us.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I found some recent internet reviews of Henry Hunan which mentioned the unusual weird taste that we thought was an accidental contamination in their oil:
I'M NOT A PICKY EATER AT ALL...but this place was rude and disgusting.
Before you read, let me first say that it was my first time there and that I always order the most standard dish before trying other stuff to check out their quality....
So I ordered the Orange Chicken for take out and $10 later I got balled up questionable chicken breaded and marinated in slimy grease. I bravely tasted it only to be REPULSED BY SOME FUNKY TASTE...ugh
----------------------------------------
THIS IS THE FIRST MEAL I'VE ACTUALLY REGRETTED IN A LONG TIME. I've been to the Henry's Hunan over in SOMA and always enjoyed it. Is it my imagination or is this location a LOT worse?! Everything we had was sooooo greasy. I literally feel sick right now, and we finished a couple of hours ago. Normally I'm eager to take leftoevers.. I'll even feast on a Chinese leftover breakfast, but I couldn't be paid to take them from here. I'd go through the list of what we ordered, but it's not even worth it. There are so many restaurants close by.... steer clear.
---------------------------------------
I WASN"T REALLY IMPRESSED. The food isn't necessarily bad but, this place always seems like a rat trap you would see on the TV show "Dirty Jobs." I kind of feel like it's a Dirty Job to eat here. The tables are always sopping wet after they wipe it down and so are the plates and silverware they bring you as well. The service is fast and the food is cheap.
-------------------------------------
BAD SERVICE, BORDERLINE RUDE WAITRESS. She might as well said "You order food, you eat, and you get out". After taking the order the food came lightning fast. I ordered Beef and Broccoli and Fried Rice. The rice was good, the Beef and Broccoli was really greasy and had a FUNKY FLAVOR.
service = rude but fast
food = greasy and nasty (except for the rice)
parking = Impossible
Cat, I agree, that's an odd post! By the way, this weekend was a Nike Marathon, no wonder there was no street parking! We're going Friday, it's a weeknight. Food? Well, we'll help them stay in business

And one more time, there are many Hunan's in San Francisco, we're going to 924 Sacramento St @ Vallejo.
<<the peanut sauce which they apparently forgot to serve us. >>

Haha, that the thing, you have to ask for it. LOL
thereyet
cat-Yes that would be great if you want to take BART together. And ncounty if you can meet us, too, that would be even better.
There is a chance I will be getting a car. Some of that depends if LoveItaly needs a ride home on Sat or we decide to go out of the city on Sat (Muir Woods?) if I don't drive LI home.
Midpenisula-I don't think LoveItaly's comment had anything to do with a Fodor's inner circle. If you really are a long time poster, why did you register with a new name and have only used it once? Obviously you can see why we are confused. And if you were at the March GTG at E Tutto Qua, then identify yourself.
Faina-Did you mean 924 Sansome Street for the Henry Hunan's?
Yea!!! I will be able to attend....just bought my plane tickets. I fly into SFO. Faina and Paula, it will be great to see you again! I am looking forward to meeting everyone else.....
I won't be able to ride with you Paula since I'll be at SFO and you'll be at OAK. Let's plan to meet up mid to late afternoon with Cat when we all get into town.

Paula, when do you arrive in Oakland? I was going to email you but I am not positive I have the right email. I think I have it but do you sill have mine? It is my screen name at aol. Maybe we can figure out a place to meet.
cat, Oakland International is a wonderful small airport and it will be very easy to find each other. There are only two terminals, so even if you are in different terminals it is no problem at all.

If yo are both taking the BART shuttle, the island where the shuttle picks you up is a good place to meet.

Bruce is right. AirBART now makes only one stop. Exchange your cell phone numbers in e-mail.

When will those 4 know if they're coming or not?
I am going to call the Resto now and will tell them we have 21, but I will tell them give us + or - 5, to be more rough about it.
Still nothing from Katie, should I drop her another EM?
thereyet
Yes, sure! Katie's posting on Fodor's, so now is good time to e-mail.
Is it too early to plan the next GTG?
April 25 2009 Petaluma butter and eggs day parade. Mark your calendars.
Now back to Friday GTG.

Alright already! You run a tight ship Faina.
I spoke with my boss this afternoon, and.....
unfortunately.......
I'm very sorry to say....
I WILL BE THERE!!!
Yea!!!!! I'm so excited.
Yeah-glad you will be there and now LoveItaly has a ride for sure although I was looking forward to spending time with her driving to Vacaville.
Can't wait to see everyone.
Three cheers for ToadToes!!!!

Toes, you scared me!
Yay for the SF GTGs! No offense to my part of the state, but SF does the best GTGs!
Unfortunately, we will have to cancel to attend the wedding of friends Friday night in Oakland. Fear of Prop 8 passing has gotten some folks 'rushing' to the altar. Sorry to miss! Carry on, Maven
Maven, I am sorry you two will not be able to join us as I was so looking forward to meeting you. But going to your friends wedding is certainly more important. Good wishes and a long lovely live together is wished for your friends.
Hopefully you will be able to attend the next SF GTG which no doubt will take place in 2009.
Paula we went to E Tutto Qua on our own after reading about it in the March GTG thread. I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting any of you and I dunno who CiaoLeone is, so please don’t get us mixed up Faina. You all be nice now and don’t put her on the skewers. LOL. May you all enjoy your meal at Henry Hunan.
LoveItaly (and others)--yes, disappointed not to be able to meet such fine folks, but glad to be celebrating with friends. Carry on!
Hello all!
Now that Toedtoes and I know our schedule here is what we have planned.
She will pick me up by 10:30am so we should be in SF by noon. We will park in the garage we like at North Beach.
We are going to have lunch at the Mona Lisa and plan to be there at noon or just a few minutes afterwards.
We sure invite any of you that would like to join us for lunch as you would be most welcome.
http://www.monalisasf.com/
After lunch we will take a taxi (which the restaurant will get for us) to Fisherman's Wharf to take the Bay Cruise at 2:30pm. We can get more than one taxi if necessary.
Please let me know by Wednesday if you would like to join us at the Mona Lisa for lunch as I will take care of the reservation.
After the Bay Cruise we will just go with the flow so to speak until it is time for the GTG.
I am so happy that Toedtoes got the day off from work! What a fun day it will be.
And Paula, again I thank you from the bottom of my heart regarding your kind offer to drive me home on Saturday. But now you can enjoy SF or Muir Woods which makes me happy. But again dear friend, a sincere thank you.
So if not at the Mona Lisa for lunch Toedtoes and I will see some of you for the Bay Cruise and the rest of you at the GTG!
YAY for Toed getting the day off!!
I'm arriving at 10 am so I think I can get to Mona Lisa in time for lunch.
TrvlMaven-I am sorry you won't be at the GTG but enjoy your friend's wedding.
Well now that Friday seems set, we can start thinking at Saturday!! I started a new thread about Saturday plans but we can discuss it here also. Whatever you guys want to do. But here is the link to the new thread.

Let me ask Kal! BRB
Hi there P_M, I will add you to the reservation at the Mona Lisa. If you are a bit late not to worry as you will still have time to eat. We will get the taxis to Fisherman's Wharf around 1:45pm. P.S. The reservation will be under my name. I am so glad you can join us!
I'm still a def maybe.
BUT...if others agree to share their wealth and buy all of my drinks, meal and dessert (which is usually more wine), how CAN a guy refuse?
Especially if Faina agrees to be my chaperone as Mrs Kal wouldn't be there and I wouldn't want all of you good lookin' women taking advantage of a boozed up Kal.
(a note to myself: bring a ruler to whack Kal
)
Kal, which is your table: hot or mild?
Around all of you gorgeous ladies mine will be HOT, of course!
Red hot or blue hot?
:-"
Depends on if I can ditch my chaperone! :-"
I'm looking forward to it, LoveItaly. On the odd chance I have a flight delay and can't make it to lunch, I'll give you a call.
Wishing y'all a wonderful GTG!
We sure wish you could be with us starrs! But next time..when you are out here again!

And I was ready too - was bringing a 2 x 4 to whack you upside the head again
Have a great time everyone! I have margaritas at north shore in my future Friday night (and maybe a couple of slut machines
FainaA: Do you want to borrow my 2 x 4 to keep Kal in line??
Sounds like it's going to be a great get together. I'm guessing there will be seismic activity in the Bay Area if Kal shows up
jj,

If the 2x4 didn't work a few weeks ago how can it work now since it's worn out?
a8, It's been dead calm out here the past 2 days so if I get my E'quake Headache, I may not go.
Plus, if I go there might not be enough food for me and ty!
starrsy, "y'all"???
My, how "folksy".

Kal, it's a big kitchen!

Any tips for getting from SFO to Columbus Motor Inn? I think it is in Cow Hollow. I will take the Bart if there is one from that airport....which stop? Market? Would appreciate any details from those more experienced. I usually come from Oakland and know the Bart well from there.

delivery - I'm losing letters

No advice there, just posting to make this an even 400 posts!
ncounty-Columbus Motor Inn isn't in Cow Hollow although the Cow Hollow Inn and Cow Hollow Suites are owned by the same company.
Columbus Motor Inn is close to North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf. Maybe a 10 minute walk to each.
I am taking BART for the first time also but if I understand from earlier posts, you would take BART from SFO to the Embarcadero Center. From there you would have to get a bus, taxi etc to get to Fisherman's Wharf or to Columbus Motor Inn. I am not sure what time your plane gets in, but I have suggested to Cat that she and I take a taxi to Columbus Motor Inn and then walk to Fisherman's Wharf for the 2:30 cruise. This way we know we'll make it in time. If your plane is earlier, you might have time for the bus. There is a bus that stops right in front of Columbus Motor Inn-I think it's bus line #30 but don't know where you pick that bus up. I am sure Faina or others can help with that.
The 30 goes north on 4th, crosses Market, then up Stockton, then Columbus, then the Wharf. Therefore, it goes right past the Powell BART station. Don't know where it stops - perhaps in front of the Macy's mens store. I would walk from Market & Stockton, north on Stockton till I see a bus stop.
Stu Dudley
http://transit.511.org/static/providers/maps/SF_712200711012.pdf
Bus 30 crosses Market on 3rd, so Mongomery station is the closest, from SFO take a car in the back of the train, exit back, left. (or if from OAK exit front, to the right)
Go up to Kearny ~ 1 block, right onto Kearny.
And this is where I'm not sure, there was construction, so the stop may be moved 1 block north.
The stop is shared with #45, and the buses look similar, watch out which one to board.
(Stu, from 3rd St it goes up Sutter a couple of blocks, then on Stockton)
Paula, I am totally fine with that. If we get there quick enough, we can even crash Mona Lisa's!
Thanks, Faina - 4th is one-way - the wrong way - it goes south.
So - catch the 30 by getting off BART at Montgomery, walking west on Market till Kearny, north on Kearny till you spot a bus stop.
Stu Dudley
Cat and Paula, if you two can make it to the Mona Lisa, even if time for just a drink that would be wonderful. I will have two taxis going to Fisherman's Wharf for the boat cruise so there will be plenty of room for you two to taxi with us!
More confusion? There is also a bus #20 that makes a loop around the Embarcadero Center and goes right by the BART Embarcadero stop at Drumm and Market. That bus also goes right to the Columbus Motor Inn.
It is a daytime only bus, but fine for you on Friday during the day. In fact, it would also stop right by the Mona Lisa on Columbus, where they could hold your "luggage" and you could join us! For Mona Lisa, get off at Vallejo.
You want to get off the #20 or #30 at Chestnut and Columbus, pretty much right across from Columbus Motor Inn. You'll see Bimbo's (no comments please), and the Columbus Motor Inn is right next door.
We're in Room 108 if anyone is looking for us.
Neo, do you know if they have wifi? WOndering if should bring my laptop...
You'll see Bimbo's (no comments please)

KAAAAAAAAAAAAALL !!!!!!!!!!
They have both wireless and DSL. I'm having some trouble with the wireless cutting off -- but they said it's because I'm at the end of the hall and have a weak signal -- in other rooms it apparently works better. The DSL is by the bed, so I have to use the laptop on the bed if I plug in.
Help!
Would appreciate any info on parking near the restaurant, either here or e-mail me. Thanks.
giovanna,
i had posted this earlier in the thread....
"there are 2 parking places on sansome not far from henry hunans.
there are also assorted lots on montgomery and broadway.
of course if you can find street parking, you have hit the jackpot!"
Thank you, thank you, thank you! It's one thing to drive to San Francisco, it's another to find a place to put what got you there. LOL
Wow ncounty-That bus stuff is too confusing for me!! Glad it's you not me. Cat, I think we will stick with the taxi from the Embarcardero to the hotel if that's OK with you. The fare shouldn't be too much.
Paula, I too would take a taxi. I have been here all of my life and I have never taken a bus. Faina has "threatened" to give me a lesson however, we need to get together and do that, lol.
lol, wow those directions are amazing!!! It's almost like a comedy skit out of a movie. (The Princess Bride, "never make a bet with a Sicilian" poison drink scene comes to mind). Nothing like travel buddies from Fodor's if you need directions. I am well equipped for my bus ride! Thanks.
My plane lands in SFO at 1:13 pm so I think I will probably just be getting to the hotel around 3 pm. Very excited to seeing everyone at dinner....perhaps for those with laptop connectivity, if pre dinner drinks are planned and posted on these threads, I'd love to join in.
Hi ncounty, I just sent you an email so we can work out your joining us after our boat tour that ends at 3:30pm.
Hey Guys and Gals,
I know all of you are going to have a great time not only at the GTG, but it sounds like some other fun things are planned for the weekend too. All of us here at Fodors want pictures and of course ALL of the dirty details!!
P_M, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for suggesting that all of you still toast my boy Diablo.
Now, unless a miracle happens, I will not be going to London this weekend. I have come down with a bug that has me praying for death to feel better.
I am due to fly to San Diego tomorrow before the flight to London on Friday. But at this point, I do not see it happening. Man, these last couple of months have really sucked!!
Tom
Oh Tom! I imagine that you have the bug that I had that lasted two weeks. Many others have had it also including some Fodorites.
Are you dizzy, achy all over, earache, completely so tired you can hardly function?
I am so very sorry Tom..I was broken hearted that I couldn't get to SF to see andrew8 and his wife steelygirl. I can imagine how upset you are to have to cancel your trip to London.
Please, don't push yourself. Sleep all you can, drink lots of water, eat lightly (broths, crackers etc.) and take Advil for the pain. At least that was my doctor's orders.
Sending you a big hug dear one..I am so terribly sorry you are ill especially right at this time.
I am really sorry Tom as I know how much you were looking forward to going to London. Hope you feel better soon.
Tom, just take care of yourself. You are not alone in cancelling a trip, just keep telling yourself: I will rescedule, I will make this trip later, I will make it happen.
Tom: I've been feeling sorry for myself because we've had no trips this year. Now I hear about your plans having to be cancelled. That's even a worse disappointment! Agree with Faina, replan and take the trip when you are able. Hope your bug won't linger and you'll be feeling better soon.
tom,
what an absolute shame. i hope you feel better soon.
Tom, I am so sorry! What a disappointment! You must be so dad, especially after all the sadness you've had to deal with already.
Maybe it is just a 24 hour thing and you will feel better tomorrow! I'm crossing my fingers!
cat - Sad to say it is more than a 24 hour thing. I feel just as bad, if not worse today, I know there is something going around. Guess I caught it. My friend is going without me. I don't blame him, I would have done the same if things were reversed.
I hope all of you have a great time this weekend.
Tom
Tom that really stinks, you've had such a run of bad luck lately.
Please get well soon.
Yes, sadly the bug/virus that is going around generally takes two weeks before one is feeling back to normal. A couple that live near me have had it for three weeks. And when at the doctor's today they told me some of their elderly patients have not been well for a month. It is a very nasty virus. Take real good care of yourself dear Tom!
Thankfully I am recovered but I sure got behind with things..and still am. But the SF visit and GTG comes first, lol!
See you all tomorrow!
More bad news...

I'll be there.
I found a cheap parking lot so I can sleep in my car.
Hocked some old diamond earrings of Mrs Kal's for a tank of gas and bridge tolls.
Now.....to find some kind soul to redistribute their dinner wealth my way?
ty....as long as they have BIG TABLES!
Hey Kal,
What's the over/under on your beer consumption at the GTG ??
I'll go with 8 !
I carry that in reserve in one cheek!

Don't know if I want to drink that much since Faina has jj's 2x4 and a note from Mrs Kal to use it!
All I know is I really haven't found a good wine to go with Chinese food.
Now BEER on the other hand....
LOL Kal, we will survive your presence..but will the restaurant?
Seriously, I am so glad that you will be joining us. And per our emails I think you have all the info that you need.
You mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FszAytIwlTw

I'll be gooooood.
I promise.
Nice one Kal LOL !!
'nite all!
Gotta rest up if I have to keep up with L'Italy!
And the meeting time is, I believe, 6:30 p.m. Friday October 24th at
Henry's Hunan
924 Sansome Street (between Broadway & Vallejo)
San Francisco, CA 94111
(415) 956-7727
(Henry's has several locations)
Parking on the street, or couple of lots close by.
Additions or corrections?
Hey Guys,
I am calling it a night. Have a great time! As you all raise a toast with wine, except kal with his beer, I will toast you with a shot of NyQuil. Enjoy!!
Tom
PS P_M - Yes it has been tough the last couple of months, but it is a good thing I like lemonade. LOL
"Hocked some old diamond earrings of Mrs Kal's for a tank of gas and bridge tolls." - I wonder if Mrs Kal knows about it!

Warning to all: I have a camera. And I don't have to take photos of myself
Have you noticed ThereYet had not posted since he said the goodies had not arrived yet?
Maybe he got them - hocked them (they are VERY sought after items
) and is on his way to Mexico
Janis, I worry. We don't have an extradition agreement with Mexico. Of course we could hire the Dog Bounty Hunter, but how much will we offer?
How much for ThereYet, and how much for the Great Orange Totes? Of course the travel books are priceless!
<<Have you noticed ThereYet had not posted since he said the goodies had not arrived yet? >>

So my friends, was it all you thought and hoped it would be? (I know that was a stupid question)
I hope all of you had a great time tonight and the same for those of you getting together during the rest of the weekend.
I, we, here at Fodors look forward to hearing the details and seeing the pictures.
Tom
We just got home from a terrific evening Tom. It was a wonderful experience after all the years I've been posting to meet so many nice people I'd previously only known by their posts. It's truly a special group!
The food was very good. My husband enjoyed himself very much. Everyone was friendly, fun and a pleasure to be with. I finally got a real hug from LoveItaly. What a lovely person.
Kal and Faina were in rare form. It was great to meet out of towners Patrick and Lee and P_M. Also found out that thereyet lives in the same town we do. Small World!
Hope you're feeling better Tom. I'm sure the pictures will bring a smile to your face even if you're still not up to par. They took some doozies!
We missed you Tom.

You will be getting mail.
The food was plentiful, fabulous, and inexpensive. And Henry's Hunan staff were very gracious and friendly and managed our chaos very well. Everyone was shocked at how easy it was on their pocket books when the bill was paid.
The fellowship was quite memorable. Lots of photos to come I am sure.
Kal, I believe, made the over as it was a paltry eight...and they weren't done when I left.
The traveling Fodorites were treated in Grand style. Neo and Lee, and P_M drew interested audiences. We had at least three up from SoCal including Paula, cat, and ncounty. And the rest of us came from all over the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley area. Twenty-one of us in all.
Every one was gifted by the Fodor's Staff (KATIE). And we had a numbers game for the wonderful spanking new guides furnished by Fodor's (KATIE)!
And did i say we took lots of photos? Including a great "formal" group photo.
What can I say...it was a great success!
Thank you again Katie! I read your letter to every one. That was a nice touch.

<< Also found out that thereyet lives in the same town we do. Small World!>>
Heck, only 5 or 6 blocks away! Lovely to meet you and the Mr. Giovanna!

thanks to loveitaly, i was able to attend this gtg.
what a wonderful fun evening.
tom, thought of you, missed you and toasted diablo.
cat and ncounty,
the grey cells finally came back into action.
the restaurant we passed in north beach is called rose pistola.
Thanks abranz! I've heard of it,
.
Cat says hi and she is already in her pajamas. We debated about going out for a last hurrah but ended up on Fodor's instead. Isn't that just classic?!!! What do two Fodorites do after a GTG but return to our rooms and we both have our laptops fired up.
It was a great GTG and wonderful to meet everyone and put faces with names. Great pics to follow courtesy of Toedtoes!
Hello dear Fodorites! I just got home and am thrilled I was able to log on to Fodor's..thanks to one of the great Tech fellows at Fodor's by the name of Adam. Even though most could log on at some point this morning I couldn't put Adam was great at keeping in touch with me. And I returned home to discover yes I am logged one..good news that..thank you Adam!
It was an absolute perfect day. Toedtoes and I arrived exactly at noon at the MonaLisa thanks to the light traffic on I-80. Patrick, Lee and P_M had just arrived. We had a fantastic lunch. The owner of the Mona Lisa, Marizio, came over to our table to greet us. He sent over a beautiful appetizer plate which was on the house. We all had fantastic pasta dishes and wine. After lunch Marizio got us two taxis and we went to Pier 43 1/2. And there we immediately saw Cat and Paula! Perfect.
The weather couldn't have been better, the SF Bay was calm and beautiful. The hour long boat tour was lovely. We all so enjoyed being together.
And afterwards P_M went to her hotel and yes as always..I was able to get her a taxi.
We ga
Ooops, how did that get posted LOL.
Actually before precious P_M went to her hotel we sat at an outdoor cafe and had cold drinks, wine and some snacks and dear Ncounty joined us.
And then P_M went to her hotel for a bit as did Patrick and Lee and the rest of us walked to Gharadellie Square and again enjoyed the absolute beautiful weather and Ncounty enjoyed a fantastic ice cream sundea.
We then walked to the hotel where P_M and Ncounty were staying (as were Patrick and Lee). We gals sort of got freshened up for the GTG dinner. It reminded me of a dorm room..so much fun! Called Patrick and Lee and we (well I actually if I may brag as I am always so good at getting taxis in SF, lol) got two taxis to get us to the GTG.
And what fun! Fun hardly describes the beautiful evening.
The restaurant was perfect for our group and everyone so enjoyed the good and pleasant service. There was a "cocktail hour" as we all greeted each other, caught up on our lives and met those we had not had the pleasure of meeting before.
Elegant Giovanna and her handsome Italian husband. Beautiful abranz, lovely Ronda and her so sparkling husband Dan, charming and so attractive Framboise. So many new faces and yet in a way one felt that they had already met them..at least I did.
Food everyone enjoyed, good wine and beer. Wonderful service with lots of smiles and good attention to our needs. A section of the restaurant just for us. A lovely clean ladies room.
Lots of photos were taken. And oh Tom, the group photo which I know will be posted was in honor of dear Diablo. You and Diablo were so thought of!
We had fun teasing our Stu Dudley, as we had spent time at Fisherman's Wharf. As usual he was a good sport and again as usual he displayed his wonderful smile and laugh. We missed Mrs. Stu Dudley who was out of town.
And Kal. Kal behaved! Go figure, lol. Actually we all behaved.
And thereyet read Katie's charming letter and the Fodor's goodies were passed out to everyone.
Thank you thereyet and precious Faina for getting this GTG organized. It couldn't have been more perfect.
And at the end of the evening..Kal drove some home, dear abranz drove toedtoes and I back to NorthBeach where we had parked the car.
Again, it couldn't have been a more perfect day. The weather, the activities, each and every person that brought love, hugs and friendship. Great food and drinks throughout the day. Wonderful service from the restaurants. Truly a very beautiful day that I think we will all always remember.
Personally I just want to say that seeing all of you that I have been with before was as usual absolutely wonderful. And meeting those of you that I have not met before was a true pleasure.
Wishing everyone a good weekend. And thank you for the most perfect day in beautiful San Francisco!
And one correction, sigh, it was Cat's and Ncounty's room where we gals freshened up..that was so nice of them to offer the hospitality!
It sounds like a wonderful time with wonderful people! We were there in spirit
I apologize for the technical problems yesterday on the Forums.
The GTG sounds, unsurprisingly, like a good time. Looking forward to seeing the photos!
Wish i were there! PHOTOS PLEASE!
Sorry I missed it and so very glad you had such a grand time. Could we have a final list of attendees.
Thanks
Roger
I had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Finally got to meet people that I've been conversing with for years on Fodors. And guess what - they are all even nicer & more interesting in person.
Thanks to all who organized this.
Stu Dudley
I just woke up and I'm starting up the desktop to process the photos. But first, I have to eat a few legs off of Tom the Lobster...
LI - did you attend the same GTG? Kal certainly DID NOT behave himself! He was drunk on the floor half the night!! I have the photos to prove it.
Don't mean to rat out Kal, but toedtoes is right about him. I was there, holding part of the lobster (Framboise the other part), both of us looking down at poor Kal there on the floor. tsk, tsk
Well toedtoes and Giovanna, I was just trying to be discreet in case Mrs. Kal read about our GTG. Didn't want to get him into more trouble..he gets into enough trouble on his own, lol. Wonder if he has woke up yet?
I can hardly wait to see the photos toeds! Thank you for taking them.
LoveItaly, if you think Mrs. Kal will be mad about this, wait until she finds out her diamond earrings are gone! LOL
Oh dear Giovanna, I hadn't thought of that! Maybe Kal had best stay in SF for a few weeks until his wife calms down, lol.
If we don't hear from Kal I guess we can assume he has had his head bashed in?
Hope you and your dear husband are having a relaxing day. I sure am being lazy, sigh.
Phew. The Fodor's guides for NYC and SF that Lee and I won didn't quite put us over the baggage weight limit. Here we sit at the SFO Admiral's Club while they work on our plane -- a half hour late so far and counting.
Had a great breakfast at "Pat's Cafe" this morning -- 7 of us. LoveItaly, we think Cat has your sunglasses.
What a wonderful evening we had last night (despite Lee saying he didn't -- as Thereyet noticed, Lee was the last person to still be eating -- and eating). Thanks to Faina for starting the ball rolling on this and to Thereyet for the suggestion -- it was indeed an ideal place for such a gathering -- no one objected when we took over the whole place.
And once again, I think my disguise was successful. No one has yet detected that I'm really Brad Pitt.
Now the real issue. Will some of us be drummed out of Fodors when it is discovered we spent much of the afternoon at (GASP) Fisherman's Wharf?
Anyone in SF up for another GTG -- this afternoon at the airport? Our latest announcement now puts our flight 3 hours late -- departure anticipated at 3 PM instead of 12:05. Glad we were planning to spend the night in Miami and not drive home since that now puts us getting in about midnight or later.
At least I am glad we were able this morning to switch to the front row of coach -- the two bulkhead seats with lots of legroom in a row that otherwise would be for 3 seats (on a 957). Now if we only get a plane that flies!
Oh Patrick, I am sorry about your delayed flight! Yes you will need to spend the night in Miami..well at least you have a hotel reservation!
Dear Lee enjoyed eating all of his food, including the chocolate bar!
Regarding the sunglasses, no they are not mine. I just checked and I have mine.
SO I HOPE WHOEVER IS MISSING THEIR SUNGLASSES WILL READ PATRICK'S COMMENT THAT CAT HAS THEM.
Not shouting..just hoping it will catch the attention of the owner of the sunglasses.
Hoping you two get on that flight ASAP Patrick.
It was wonderful spending the day and evening with you and Lee. Beautiful memories!
<<Now the real issue. Will some of us be drummed out of Fodors when it is discovered we spent much of the afternoon at (GASP) Fisherman's Wharf?>>

Neo et al, hate to say it but...Fisherman's Warf is THE quintessential SF experience. What are tourists to do, but visit the #1 tourist attractions.
Of course, when that is done, there is sooo much more to see and do, which is WHY SF is a fantastic place to visit.
thereyet
Hello thereyet, thanks for chosing such a great restaurant for our GTG. Room to move around was priceless! Wonderful service etc. And your neighbors..who knew..although I sort of suspected you all lived need each other. In that they were able to park right there next to the restaurant was wonderful.
Many thanks thereyet for always making every GTG wonderful..you and Faina are fantastic!
Well it sounds like you guys had a great time. Sorry that I missed it. Can't wait to see the photos. Any way to let us know what Katie said in her letter?
Tom
Hello Tom, I can't wait to see the photos either..although I always hate my photos, lol.
You were sure there with us in spirit dear friend as was beautiful Diablo.
Next year we will have a GTG when you are here! I sure hope you are feeling better. Take good care of yourself.
My head hurts......

So I guess I had a blast!
BTW...I didn't drive anyone back anywhere especially after making the "over"!
Thee Stu Dudley and I escorted the lovely P_M back to her hotel for a final final then I hit the Omni for a final final final then hoofed it back to the Hilton.
I tried making the breakfast this a.m. but kinda forgot where it was! I thought it was one of the little cafes right at the corner of Beach and Columbus. EHHHHHHHNT...WRONG!
So I wound up at the Blue Mermaid.
Hoofed it back to the Hilton via Chinatown and Niketown on such a BEAUTIFUL morning.
It was a pleasure seeing everyone one again, even Faina, and meeting all the others.
I hope to be posting the pics soon.
And...ME??? On the floor???
Never!!!
OH, well what do I know Kal..anyway you and Stu did see dear P_M to her hotel so that is good.
About your head and forgetting where the breakfast was, sorry!
Are you now home? I heard sirens earlier on I-80 and wondered...!
And YOU took pictures too? YIKES!
<<And...ME??? On the floor???
Never!!! >>
Really Kal? I beg to differ:
http://tinyurl.com/6bcpbc
Enjoy all!
If anyone wants high-quality copies of the group photos, just email me and I'll send them to you.
Ncounty - how did you so competently disappear in the group photos??
LI - I heard some sirens on I-80 up here also. Maybe they were all escorting Kal back to Placer County...
LOL!! Toedtoes - your GTG photos are so funny!! Too bad I couldn't make it over. It looked like so much fun. I'll have to catch Faina in Sacto.
MY
Hey toeds..I bet..no doubt the CHP wanted to make sure Kal got home without causing an accident, you think?
Love your photos! What a terrific group of fantastic Fodorites. And yes ncounty..where are you? You pulled a toedtoes trick evidently, lol!
Hello MichelleY, I wish you could have been with us. Hope your vineyards are doing well.
I hope by this time Patrick and Lee are on their plane! Hours of a delayed flight is not fun.
Thanks for posting the photos toedtoes..and yes..I would love high quality when you have time dear friend!
I think it was more the SF, Vacaville and Sacramento police wanted him out of their jurisdictions.
I'll send them as soon as I'm back on the other computer.
Kal,
You're a splitting image of Joe Walsh of the Eagles.
Glad everyone had such a good time.
Thank you toedtoes for posting the pictures. Sure looked like you all had fun. And thank you all for toasting Diablo.
One question though. Can someone tell me whats the deal with the lobster?
Tom
During our <gasp> visit to Fisherman's Wharf, we saw the sourdough lobster and thought it was cute. So we bought it and brought it to the party. I named it Tom after you - since you couldn't be here, Tom the Lobster was.
Some shots looked like SNL!!!
What great photos, Toedtoes! I wish I could have made that cruise as well.....looks beautiful.
I think I am the shadow behind heavens in one photo and behind P_M in another. I am not as "competent" as you though, dear Toedtoes!
It was a fantastic trip for me....meeting everyone and what a glorious weekend in SF! The weather couldn't have been better.
After the events as outlined so well by LoveItaly, we got a good night's rest and were up at dawn. Cat and I went for a walk to explore North Beach. We stopped at a lovely sidewalk cafe called La Boulangerie (?) and shared an almond croissant and had coffee at an outdoor cafe table. It felt like we were in Paris, or Italy.
We then explored the back streets of North Beach and found some amazing quaint shops that were just opening up. We made our way to Pat's cafe and joined the rest of the group for breakfast. I had to leave a bit early because I wanted to explore the Marina district and had limited time to get that done.
I ended up walking all the way from our hotel in North Beach up the crookedest street of Lombard and then through Cow Hollow/Union Street. I really wanted to have lunch at Betelnut but they weren't opening for half an hour so I journeyed on and got to Chestnut St. in the Marina district. It was all so fantastic. Gorgeous restaurants, one more inviting than the last and fashionable boutiques. I ended up lunching at a place called the Squat and Gobble and enjoyed a Cappellini Puttanesca. I couldn't help eavesdropping on a terse conversation between two young women sitting next to me, the likes of which I've never heard before! They were having a brutally honest discussion of their friendship with the boxing gloves taken off. "the reason I don't want to be your friend isn't just because of one thing; there are so many. You are so negative and self-centered, you never listen to anybody".....OMG. It is hard to keep a poised poker face and not just jump into their conversation and start refereeing.
After exploring the rest of the area, I hopped on a bus (30) and headed back to North beach. Did some shopping and bought lovely knits from boutique stores. I then headed for the airport but hadn't calculated how bad the traffic would be. The bus ride took waaay longer than I thought and I knew I was in trouble. I hustled to get to the Bart station at Montgomery as quickly as I could and was so relieved to get to the platform and see the sign saying next train to SFO in 1 minute. I just made it with 1 minute!!! boy that was close.
patrick- so sorry to hear about your delay; I hope you are not too exhausted when you get home.
I am SOOOOOO jealous--while the wedding we attended was a wonderful and joyous event--I couldn't help but keep looking out across the Bay (from Jack London Square) and thinking "What a great night to be in the City!). Then, the cousin of one of the brides sat next to us and proclaimed "We rode the ferry over and it was wonderful"--arrgh. Then, thinking we had selected the perfect "easy get-a-way" table, we were corraled by another cousin, who apparently was "off their meds"--hell for another hour. By now, Mr. TrvlMaven is giving me the "I gave up Chinese food with "strangers" in the City for THIS?? looks and I know the penance may last for weeks. Oy--finally an opening and by now I realized I gave my friend a moment of joy when I congratulated her (in our two minutes of conversation)--and will have to wait for the next GTG.
Good morning TrvlMaven. I sure thought of you while at the GTG and wished that you two could have been with us. It was truly a beautiful GTG.
Why do two events always have to be held at the same time? That has often happened to me.
We will look forward to meeting you at the next GTG. So tell your dear husband to "forgive" you lol.
Thanks for sharing the pictures!! It looks like you all had a fabulous time!!!!
Toedtoes your pictures are wonderful. I particularly liked the ones on your Bay cruise. You have an excellent eye.
We are so glad we finally decided to attend an SF GTG. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Additionally, we've never met a nicer group of people, who just happen to all post on Fodor's. What a privilege to be part of it!
I was so glad you two decided to attend the GTG Givovanna! I am sorry we didn't get to visit more but nonetheless it was so wonderful meeting you and you husband and getting better acquainted! And I was relieved when we arrived in our taxi to see the huge parking garage right next to the restaurant. I had worried for you two about the parking situation.
Thanks for the slide show, toedtoes, it is really great. I've already forwarded it to all of Lee's relatives in the Bay area we met with who are still questioning who all these "strangers" are we were meeting from the internet!
Our flight ended up 4 hours delayed, with a switch of plane from a 757 to a 767 configured for international flights. Lee and I had luckily reserved the two bulkhead seats (instead of three), front row of coach that has lots of legroom. When they reticketed us for the different configuration in the Admiral's Club, the gal put is in our own little compartment. I think they use it for the pilots to nap in on international flights. It's next to the galley between the two sections of coach. We had about 7 feet between front and back partitions and it even had a curtain you could close off the compartment if you wanted. Our seats reclined completely with extendable legrests -- like older Business Class seats. We joked about never having a private suite on an airline before. We even had our own little movie screen.
But we arrived in Miami at 12:30 this morning instead of the original 8:30 PM. Luckily we had a room at the LaQuinta airport which we only did to get the 11 days of free parking -- but we welcomed having it last night as it was 2 AM when we finally fell into bed (although we were still on California time -- only 11 PM in theory). We slept till 10:30 this morning, then drove home. Lee sadly missed his waffle at the LaQuinta free breakfast, which was long over by the time we got going.
But what a wonderful 10 days we had in Tahoe and SF. And the Fodorite gathering(s) really were a highlight.
Wow, Patrick, you really lucked out with those seats. I know exactly which ones you're talking about... they're blocked off for the FAs on transatlantic flights so that they can rest. Yes, with recline PLUS leg rest.
When the FA came with beverage service, she knocked on our partition and said "Room Service".
We were busily eating our Chinese Chicken Noodle Salads from Guava and Java.
Welcome home Patrick! I am so glad you and Lee had special seats for your delayed flight! Will email you. But tell Lee's relatives that you were not with strangers my dear, you two were with good friends.
Glad you all had a great time, and I'm sorry I had to miss it.
It looks like you had a blast. Thanks for posting the pics, toedtoes.
Hey everybody!!
It's around 8pm Cali time and I will be leaving for the airport in about 2 hours for my red-eye flight to IAH, then on to AUS. I'm relaxing in the hotel lobby after my last fun day in SF.
We visited Golden Gate Park, including the Japanese Gardens and the observation deck of the museum. It was such a joy to get to know these lovely ladies. Later that evening I saw Beach Blanket Babylon which was a hilarious musical comedy. (Paula, I did see your daughter's friend in the show)
Sorry, I digress, back to the subject. Another reason I went to Fisherman's Wharf is that I wanted one last look at the bay. Once again no GG bridge but the bay was still gorgeous, even blanketed in fog.
To each and every one of you who attended the GTG, it was such a thrill to meet you. From the moment I met you all I knew I was among friends. I'm so glad you all could make it, and for those who didn't, I hope to catch you next time. And an extra thanks to Kal for the battery-operated flower you bought me at the pub. That's my favorite SF souvenier.

It's been a great weekend here in SF but it's about to end.
Saturday I spent a beautiful day with Paula and Faina. And I learned how to prounounce Faina's name correctly!! (It's not as simple as I thought)
On Kodi's recommendation I took the movie tour and it's a blast if you are a movie buff. Loved it, thanks Kodi. I was planning to walk across the GG bridge today but it didn't happen as the bridge was shrouded in fog all day. When I went to Fisherman's Wharf this morning to pick up the movie tour I looked across the bay and there was no GG bridge. That was around 10:30, then about 2 hours later the movie tour took us to the base of the GG bridge. Even from there the GG bridge was completely invisible through the thick fog. I joked with the tour guide that he was lying and the GG bridge isn't really there. I was sad not to see it, but I got over it because the views of the GG bridge were gorgeous on Friday when we took the Fodorite bay cruise. After the movie tour I visited Coit Tower, and once again no GG bridge. Later in the evening I did a cheesy tourist thing and went to Pier 39. I wanted to see the seals and I bought a few last minute souveniers. The Maltese Falcon (largest yacht in the world) was docked at Pier 35 so it was pretty cool to see that. Nobody knows how much that yacht cost, but some estimates are as high as $750 mil. By looking at it, I just can't see paying more than $500 mil, but that's JMO.
So despite the abscence of the GG bridge it was a lovely day in SF. But the best part of this trip was spending time with Fodorites. As LoveItaly said, the Fodorites are not strangers I met on the internet, you all are real friends.
Hugs all around.
I am SO sorry I missed this event--PM--great little report on the weekend. FYI--the Maltese Falcon cost $129 mil--when we were out sailing a couple of weeks ago--we were there when she unfurled her sails (like a butterfly) and sailed in front of the GG Bridge. Check it out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/travlmaven/2976429229/
Hi P_M, have a safe trip home.
Does anybody else have more photos??? The ones toedtoes posted are great, but there must be some more, right? P_M??? Faina???
HELLO dear P_M, your two days sound wonderful and I am so glad you got to the Japanese Tea Garden.
It was wonderful being with you Friday! I had no idea it was so foggy in SF..we had a crystal clear day here in Vacaville. But fog in SF..not unusual. Wishing you an ontime flight home (unlike dear Patrick and Lee's flight). Take care dear one.
TralMaven, what a beautiful photo!
Only $129 mil for the Maltese Falcon? OK, that's a bargain.
It was actually quite clear in the city, it was only the bay that was foggy. It was a lot cooler too, I finally got to wear the jacket I bought for this trip.
I miss you guys already, but I'll be back.
Posting once more, just to create the 500th post to this thread.
Hi P_M nice to finally see you and our other fodorites, My one and only trip to California, I did see the Japaneese garden and my purpose that trip, Big Sur.
LoveItaly--remember, when we get the heat--the Bay gets the fog! I always laugh when I fly home from my annual summertime trip to NC and the tourists are on the plane in tank tops and shorts--I give them the name of "the fleece guy" in Chinatown. Sounds like it was a great gathering! Safe Travels PM!
>>an extra thanks to Kal for the battery-operated flower you bought me at the pub. That's my favorite SF souvenier>>
Now nice. That was no flower - it was the "yellow rose of Texas".
Stu Dudley
Of course, Stu. And thank you for the glass of wine. I'm so glad I had the chance to visit with you and Kal at the pub, what a fun time.
Hi TralMaven, I don't know if you remember or not or if you ever read Herb Cain but no doubt you did. But anyway he had a friend who was in the ladies restroom in the Boston Airport. Next to his friend were a couple of attractive women. One of them said to the other one "did you pack a swimsuit?" and the other woman said "oh I found the cutest bikini that will be perfect for North Beach".
Hugs P_M, I miss you too! Hurry back!
And we forgot to mention didn't we..the Bushman got us. Hate that fellow LOL..but he is a Fisherman's Wharf institution.
Ahahaha, the Bushman got you!!!! Ahahahahaha!!!! That guy scared the crap out of me one day.
thereyet
LOL thereyet, yep that is how I felt. I was happily walking along with all the gals and...

And of course we didn't tip him as he wanted us to do...I hate the Bushman!
Several years ago, some poster who needed a cane to walk, was surprised by bushman. She fell to the ground, and then wacked bushman with her cane. Her husband wanted to go after bushman, but she restrained him.
Stu Dudley
Hello Stu, I don't think I read about the poster's experience but the thought has often gone through my head that someone could have a medical problem (heart attack, fall etc.) due to the Bushman. I really don't think he is funny.
Just poppin' in to wave hello to:

I will still love y'all

It was great to see everybody, some for the first time. Those GTGs are getting better and better.
Don't know about y'all, for me the highlight of this GTG was to see Kal's photo on the restaurant's wall.
Katie, thank you for the goodies!
I'll come back with more, for now only about the photos: I have an old manual camera with film. Which I have to take to develop.
OK, now that I'm finished talking, you all can "gang up on me" about my camera, you have my permission
What happened to Ciao and Leone?
They were the only "definites" who didn't make it?
Until I saw Toedtoes' pictures, I didn't realize how much Kal looked like that picture of "him" on the wall! Quite amazing.
“So my friends, was it all you thought and hoped it would be?”
We always behave like that. So far nobody complained. Well, nobody but Kal

Tom, it was all we expected and so much more! After somebody here posted a negative review we were somewhat hesitant what to expect. The food was excellent, the service was very friendly, and they were very patient with our rowdy group. We had 3 tables in the corner, like our own territory for mingling and toasting. The food was made to our orders spice-wise. It was also served home style when everybody could try everything off the plates in the middle of a table.
Maybe one negative was that there was no fabric cloth/napkins, but who really cares! And the price was right, $18 for dinner tips included at our table, the one with Kal was more expensive at $20 per person
“Kal and Faina were in rare form.” – no, Giovanna, it was our usual form
“Tech fellows at Fodor's by the name of Adam. We ga“ should I even ask what that means? And how many drinks… ah, never mind
Thank you, LindaL, for the drive home!
“I tried making the breakfast this a.m. but kinda forgot where it was!” – you must have really bad memory, pal, as you had my cell number recorded on yours. And no cell jokes please! You only allowed to thank me for not sending you a wake-up call
Now I’m down to Toed’s picture link on the thread, lemme see them first, then I’ll have some comments to post I feel
Great pictures, ToedToes! Guess which one is my favorite
as for photos, if they come out right, they will be on a CD, so I'll post a link to WorldIsRound.
"Several years ago, some poster who needed a cane to walk, was surprised by bushman. She fell to the ground, and then wacked bushman with her cane. Her husband wanted to go after bushman, but she restrained him." - I know what some of you are thinking but IT WAS NOT ME!!!!
I love Bushman, he's as part of San Francisco as the bridge and sourdough bread (even in the form of lobster!)
Now, that I have nothing more to offer till the photos are developed, I need to post the low-downs of Saturday
I thought the restaurant had several features that made the GTG "work" so well.
1. We sat at 3 large round tables - each table accommodating about 10 people. This made dinner conversation quite easy - you could converse with everyone at the table. At the earlier GTG in North Beach, we sat at banquet tables. I was only able to engage in conversation with about 5 people.
2. The restaurant was huge and quite empty. This made it easy to wander around & get to meet all the people before dinner. We were also able to act crazy without disturbing others. At group picture time, we took pics at several venues - again without bothering anyone.
3. The food & service was very good. Our table ordered everything "mild", and that was the way they prepared it. We could argue whether the food was better at the earlier restaurant in North Beach, but at Hunan our table ordered 2 or 3 orders of the appetizer that everyone seemed to recommend, then 3-4 different entres, and rice. It was put on the lazy susan in the center of the round table and we all shared. When it was time to pay the bill, we just divided the total by the number of people sitting at the table (about 6 at our table) and that was it. It was $17 each. If anyone wanted wine, beer, etc, they ordered it from the bar. As I remember from North Beach, we all had to remember what we specifically ordered and then chip in that much. When Shanghainese (I think) collected the $$$ and then put the bill on her Credit Card so she could get the miles (nice maneuver - so that's how you paid for your trip to China this week) I think she was short about $20 or so - so we had to chip in again.
On the next GTG, I think we should try to find a place that offers the same features.

"On the next GTG, I think we should try to find a place that offers the same features." - yes, yes, and yes!!
Thanks faina, but what does the bushman do that he frightens some????
He camoflauges (sp?) himself with branches from a bush then jumps out at you as you walk past.
By the way, we all were really lucky with the weather, the next weekend will be cool and rainy.
Just chiming in to say what a wonderful time I had!
Faina, thank you for putting this all together!!! Please let me know when You might be down in the Los Angeles area so we can reciprocate!
Thereyet, thank you for picking such a perfect place for a GTG! It really worked so well, we could all move around and talk and just have a great time. Ohyeah, and the food was fantastic. Loved the peanut sauce, though I had a hard time just putting it on the delicious meat pies!
Ncounty, thanks for sharing the room and getting up early and exploring! I can hardly wait to get back!
And I definitely have someone's sunglasses, but I don't know whose. If anyone is missing a pair, email me at my screen name and I'll mail them to you.
Also, is there anyone who is conveniently close to the Columbus hotel (great hotel, btw, thank you Neo, for suggesting it!)? I left something there and they will hold them but won't mail them to me.
And as soon as I figure out how to post pictures, I have a few, but not nearly as many as I would like. Too busy talking, I guess!
Hello to all my new friends! What a lovely evening spent with such lovely people.
A big thank you to Faina and Thereyet for organizing this successful GTG. What a beautiful debut for a real newbie - I have GraceJoan in the France thread to thank for that.
Also a big thank you to Toedtoes for the lovely pictures. I love the ones takenin the bay cruise. San Francisco is especially beautiful that afternoon with the warm weather and hardly any wind which is quite unusual! So good to treat our out-of-towner friends to some lovely weather.
And to Katie, our editor - The blue luggage tag will be a nice addition to my burgundy bag - the orange tote will help my family not to lose me anymore, anywhere........ The new guidebook on Peru will be enjoyed until they can find something to help with the altitude problem, it will be used on the couch but will be thoroughly enjoyed nonetheless.
Yes, NorthCounty, where were you hiding when the pictures were taken. Someone moved when I was taking yours so it turned out too fuzzy!

Just wanted to add to everyone else's posts about the wonderful GTG.
Faina-Thank you for putting this together and thereyet for picking the restaurant. The food was good and not even that spicy. I really liked that we could move around and talk with everyone. The price was right and the company excellent. We definitely need to find someplace like this for future GTG's. So much better than sitting at a long table where you can only talk to a couple of people.
It was great to see everyone I had meet previously and of course to meet new Fodorites. Toedtoes, thanks for posting the pictures so quickly. I took quite a few and I will try to get them on-line soon.
I really had a wonderful weekend from the boatride around the Bay to walking around The Ferry Building's Farmers Market with P_M and Faina.
P-M, I am sorry it was so foggy on Sunday but I am glad you got to see the Golden Gate Bridge so clearly on our cruise.
Patrick and Lee-Glad that you ended up with good seats all the way home even though you had to deal with a big delay.
Kal-We missed you at breakfast-couldn't find the restaurant, yeah, right!!
Shanghainese-Hope you enjoy your trip to China. LindaL-Thanks for the ride to Faina's.
Thanks also to everyone's advice about using BART from Oakland Airport. It was easy and I had no problems. Thereyet-I walked off BART at the Coliseum Stop and went straight onto the Air Bart bus. So no problems even though it was evening and yes there were lots of people around.
I know that this is one So. Cal Fodorite who will be attending the next SF GTG whenever that might be.
Oh yes and when the Bushman jumped out at us, I think I yelled the loudest. Then we wanted a tip from us. I looked at him like he was crazy. LoveItaly-I am with you at the Bushman-really don't think he's funny. More annoying than anything!
Paula, I'm glad you made it through BART ok on Saturday night. I am really glad you were there with me at the airport when we arrived or I might not have made it!
cat-Sounds like you had an easy time getting back to the airport. Now that we know how convenient BART is, I have no problem using it.
I was a little worried about it being evening but I didn't have to wait at all for the bus and there were people everywhere. It might be a little different if it was 11 pm but fine at 7pm.
I had lots of fun with you and ncounty. Thanks for letting me use your room to change.
What was the boat tour you all took out in San Francisco Bay?
Red and White cruises from Pier 39 1/2, the one hour bay cruise.
Does that go outside the Golden Gate bridge?
You all had perfect weather to be out on the water.
Yes, just under and beyond the bridge then returns and circles around Alcatraz.
Thank you Patrick
Actually, I believe it's Pier 43-1/2.
Duh. Yes, you're right. I had 39 1/2 in my head because that's where the Amtrak shuttle dropped us. Andrew, it's right behind the big Boudin Sourdough building.
>> I left something there and they will hold them but won't mail them to me.<<
Cat
I may go into The City tomorrow for lunch at Tadich. Give me the details & I'll try to pick up whatever you left behind.
E-mail me at StuDudley@aol.com
Stu Dudley
Topping for cat in case she missed Stu's kind offer to retrieve her item at the hotel.
Paula, I am glad I could reassure you that it would be OK.

Can't wait to have you back up here again! And that goes for you to cat...and ncounty. We love having SoCal Fodorites visit us.
thereyet
Thanks, Lovie, for topping that. I just emailed Stu.
Thanks, Stu! You've got mail!
I am glad more of you posted about not only the GTG but the rest of your time in San Francisco. Happy all of you had such a great time.
Neo - Way to go on the seat upgrade for you and Lee. But sorry for the delay.
toed - Would you please email me a better copy of the group shot and the toast to Diablo? at tomsneed6025 at yahoo Also, thank you for the explanation on the lobster. I was wondering what it was made of.
Tom
I'm grinning while picturing Stu stopping by the motel to pick up those "unmentionables" that cat left behind! Hee Hee. Bet it's something really embarrassing.
Meanwhile, did we ever discover who left those sunglasses in the room? I'm betting on Kal who was there hiding under the bed!
If those were Kal's sunglasses, I have some questions for Mrs. Kal!
Now don't be naughty, what I left behind were my precious new ankle boots recently bought in Caen. And StuDudley was true to his word and picked them up for me. Merci Beaucoup!!!!!
>>my precious new ankle boots recently bought in Caen. And StuDudley was true to his word and picked them up for me. <<
But they are too small for my wife!!!
Went to Tadich for lunch, and then walked through North Beach to pick up the shoes. It was a beautiful day & I had not walked through North Beach during the day for about a year. Great excuse to do so.
Stu Dudley
If they were your Ruby slippers I'da been down there in a heart beat!!
As for P_M...she was a rose between two thorns!
Thee Stu...don't confuse the New Yorkers when you say The City.
Tom and LoveItaly - I'll send you both the larger image tomorrow night. I don't have access to that computer tonight.
<ahem>...uhhh errrr...toadster...

You want the only negative I have of you with full frontal non-nudity???
Hellz Bellz...forgot to mention I posted my pix...still haven't captioned them yet.
And "You all look maaavehloussss".
Even ty!
toed - Thank you.
Kal - Can you provide a link to your photos?
Tom
Sorry...
Clique only.

Still haven't had a chance to "punch them up".
But I DO have the only full frontal of Toeds!
E'Bay???? Hmmmmmmm....
Kal
Congrats - you captured a pic of Ncounty!!!
Stu Dudley
Thee Stu, My camera's mad becasue I didn't get more!

I know I'm late saying this but I was thinking the same thing Patrick was in regards to what Cat may have left behind.
Why DON'T they have a "biting your tongue" emote???
Kal - just remember: I have photos of what Cat left behind and why! Mrs. Kal may come across those photos if that full frontal of me finds its way on the internet.
Just sayin.....
Come on...I wasn't as drunk as Faina looked!
Ooooooooh, you're in trouble now!!!!!!
I can hear that 2x4 all the way up here!
Kal, you big Kahuna and your side kick, faina, thank you. It looked like fun and happy you put on faces of our fodorite, grrrr which you didn't do with names
<<But I DO have the only full frontal of Toeds!>>

Dang Kal, your good. Did you go to that International Spy Museum school of spooks?
thereyet
Great pics Kal! Thanks.
thereyet
More terrific photos. Kal you and Toedtoes are so talented. Nice to see everyone looking so happy again. Makes me want to have another GTG next Friday. LOL
I think this is the first time Kal took a picture of an EMPTY plate!
And who said men never grow up? Thanks to Toed's pictures, we have a proof - Kal is out of his short pants, wearing jeans!
Great photos, and lots of them! I'll post mine today or tomorrow (too few, ran out of the film left, didn't realize I had something on there already).
I have some photos of the GTG, once again sorry I forgot 1/2 of the film was from Portland, so I have a few... some are good ones
http://www.worldisround.com/articles/349031/index.html
Thanks Faina. As I wrote in the lounge, that Kal is certainly impish
Tom and LoveItaly - you've got mail.
Thanks toeds!
And thank you Faina for posting your photos too.
Good and fun memories!
All these great photos. Enough to fill an album of just the GTG. Not a bad idea since I love my travel albums. Thank you Faina for more great shots.
Kal - Thanks for the photos. I love all the funny pictures of you and you manage to take a lot of this newbie.
Faina - Thank you so much for posting your pictures. I love the way you have captioned them. I didn't even realize that There yet and I were both wearing checks.
That GTG was a lot of fun - great initiation for a new Fodorite. I look forward to the next one........
Next one in Sacramento November 16 Sunday at noon. Or if you want to drive up to Reno on Saturday November 15.
By bus by the way, if anybody without a car want to join.

Maybe end of April in Petaluma on the day of the Butter and Egg parade? I love this parade, and it seems can go next year
I may also be in LA end of March if I get tickets. I always bug the locals, whenever I go, and sometimes I get people to come
Sorry, sorry I couldn't make it -- son had a noon rally and 9 p.m. nite rally that Friday, so we were stuck in Berkeley, stuck with an early dinner to accommodate son's "dance card". I highly recommend Bistro Liaison in north Berkeley for good, solid, traditional French bistro fare (and a fairly decent wine list!). With my son's 10% student discount, it's a solid deal.
Faina, if you're coming to L.A. let me know in advance and we'll GTG down here!
Faina,
The april Egg and Butter parade in Petaluma sounds nice, Faina. I don't drive and would like to join you on the bus ride.
I will be busy in November as I have just decided to join GraceJoan in Paris in a ParisPerfect apartment in early December. Have a lot of preps at work and at home. Poor husband will be all alone!
Till next time!
Lilia
Faina-What's this about March in LA? Maybe you will be the one get all of us So Cal Fodorites together.
Figure skating championship is in LA, end of March. I'm keeping an eye on the tickets - if I can get singles, not a $2,000 package, I may spend the night in LA for a GTG.
what a difference a week makes.
we lucked out at the gtg with the most gorgeous s.f. weather and today it is soooo yucky and depressing.
neopatrick you timed your trip just right and thanks to faina for bringing us together when the sun was out.
It's not that I timed our trip just right. I decided to bring our Florida weather with us!
Just wait till we visit Florida! It won't be rain we'll bring along!
well then neo you need to come more often with the sunshine.
just leave your hurricanes behind.
One more reason why last weekend was much better. Today BART is not running properly, due to protesters. They had to call security with dogs.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/31/BA5513RV7C.DTL&tsp=1
Hello Faina, my Comcast was down so I didn't read the news and didn't see the news on TV.
Thanbk goodness this didn't happen on the day of our GTG!
Wow, it is really raining here but we need it as we have been told we could have water rationing next summer if there isn't enough rain here and snow in the mountains. So I won't be grumbling about too much rain this winter, lol!
Yes we really did luck out on the weather. And I don't what I would have done if BART was messed up-not good for a BART beginner. LOL
I wish we'd get some of that rain down here-so far just lots of dark clouds.
Hi Paula, I was thinking about you also. That is why it is always good to have the information about a shuttle bus..sometimes BART is not running for one reason or another. Plan B is always a good thing. We just had an hour of a very big cloudburst. Now the rain has stopped and the stupid squirrels are out and dropping walnuts from the walnut trees across from me..bang, bang on the sidewalk and the roof. Annoying little fellows, lol.
Hi All! We are back from Phoenix and I was surprised to see all the great GTG pictures. Kal, great composition! So wonderful to meet you all and hope we can GTG again sometime soon!
Paula- I sure hope we don't get any rain at least for another week. My house is naked and exposed and doesn't get stucco til Wednesday or Thursday. I am keeping my fingers crossed....just hold out a fwe more days!
Hello Ronda! I so enjoyed seeing you and your charming husband. It was a fun evening wasn't it. I look forward to seeing you two again.
And ncounty..yikes! Well I will cross my fingers your area doesn't get any rain this week. I have seen a few houses the end of last week getting new roofs. Wonder how that worked out. Sure glad I had our GC put the roof on early summer.
Best of luck to you ncounty!
ciggy...Me...impish?

At my size I appreciate that!
f_e_r...My pleasure. It was a lot of fun meeting all the newbies and most of the "oldbies".
Ronda...drop me an e-mail before your next trip to "The 'ville".
Some nice places to have a glass of wine now.
Kal. . ."impish"?

Maybe that was a typo and the initial "w" or more likely "p" came up missing?
OW! That was COLD man...

FUNNY but cold!
You were hanging around Faina waaay too long!
I heard there was drizzling for about an hour today, LoveItaly. The roof has been waterproofed so my exposure is the fireplaces and all the side walls have little cover. Consequences will hopefully be mild. I remember you went through some work earlier as well. I'm glad you got yours done. I suffered from analysis paralysis so I got a later start.....and now that I've given the green light, at last, it is full speed ahead....moving blisteringly fast.
Wow, great pictures!!!! That was just such a great time!
Faina, please let us know when you might be down and we can definitely pull together an LA GTG!!! I'll start testing out restaurants right now!
The things you do for friends! :'(
ncounty-We got a little drizzle and showers my way also but nothing that lasted very long. Hope the light rain didn't mess up anything in your house.
Oh my gosh-I love your term analysis paralysis!! I have that anytime I have to make a decision particularly about things around my house. I am doing lots of small projects right now. Picking out bathroom tile was a big deal. When I painted my living room, I had samples of least 6 colors on my wall while I was trying to decide. Of course after all that I ended up with my first pick. But anyway, I am going to use that term from now on. Sounds so much better than "I can't make up my mind!"
Cat-If you ever want to check out any restaurants ahead of time, let me know. I think we should do some taste tests before Faina comes in March!
<<Cat-If you ever want to check out any restaurants ahead of time, let me know.>>

Just make sure there is room to move around. Don't like that getting stuck behind a long table and can't get up.
wouldn't want to have to do the "low crawl" again.
thereyet
So does that mean you'll come down to join our LA GTG?
I loved how things were at Henry Hunan's. I think something similar would be ideal.
Paula, yes, anytime you are near, we will check out places.
By hook or by crook, I'm the last to post, better late than never! I wasn't able to access Fodor's the day after the GTG for 5 days and then left for a 2.5 weeks China trip, just returned on Sunday. Big thanks to the always trusty Faina, she acted on my behalf thru e-mail helping coordinate my GTGs in China, what a terrific pal.
Bolshoi thanks again to Faina and thereyet for putting together this GTG in honor of Patrick and Lee, it was so exciting to meet old and new Fodorites and I truly enjoyed your great company as all have expressed here. Everyone was a mr or ms Congeniality and good looking too.
The 3 tables were losely divided by those who prefer mild, spicy and fiery food. Our mild table of 8 ordered the following to share:
Egg rolls
Potstickers
Diana's meat pie
Hot & sour soup w/out meat
Velvet chicken
Kong pao chicken
Beef w/ vegetables
Shrimp w/ tofu
Sweet & sour cod fish
Scallops Hunan style
Mixed vegetables with bean curd
Till we GTG again, dear Fodorite friends, stay well and happy travels!
Shanghainese, welcome back! I'm delighted to see you have your log-in working now!

Welcome back home, welcome back to Fodor's, and...
welcome back to work!
Hi Shanghainese: It was great sharing a table with you, and your explaining dishes and teaching us a few words. Hope you had a good trip to China and, as Faina said, welcome home.
Welcome back Shanghainese!
ty
Welcome home Shanghainese!
If there is an LA GTG I'm in-don't know anyone here yet but I really enjoy posting and using the posts on this site for my trips! My boyfriend lives in LA so I'm down there 1-2 weekends a month.
winesaavy, where in LA? We live just south of LAX.
I'm game to plan one whenever anyone else is. Probably after the holidays unless someone is planning a trip down here that we can really around.
Shanghainese-Welcome back from China. It was great to see you in SF and I am glad you had a good trip.
Cat-Yes we should plan a GTG after the holildays for the So. Cal area. A few years ago I tried to put one together but it never happened. We could even do it in Orange County so we could get people from San Diego, OC and LA.
Winesavy-Let us know when you will be in the area.
I can't believe this thread is still going. All we need is a couple more to get to 600 posts.
OK, here's post # 600.
I imagine it will stop at 665. I mean, who would want to write post # 666?
Let's shoot for January. Right now, that month is completely open.

I'll be in the area for Christmas-but that's out obviously
Then I'll probably be there a weekend in both February and March. I agree about OC-it could be the meet-in-the middle type place. If in February it'll probably be the 15th/16th (I usually arrive 9 or 10pm on sat night due to my winery events planner schedule
Rumor has it that a much loved fodorite might be in the area around the 1-17 of December.
Is anyone available for that? We can always have a mini GTG and then a bigger one after the holidays.
OH NOOOOO....
A So Cal GTGAPALOOOZA!!!
<<I imagine it will stop at 665. I mean, who would want to write post # 666?>>

thereyet
Who's the mystery guest for the SoCalGTGAPALOOZA, cat?
thereyet
Well, I was hoping it would be you, but since you haven't signed up, I will have to love with the disappointment!
No, Swisshiker is going to be in town! One of these days, some of you NorCal folk need to represent, though!
Oh come on now, cat, fess up.

The REAL mystery guest is the introduction of MR. CAT to Fodorville.
Me, I'm just a friendly Texan lookin' to share some grub with a few of y'all. After all, we've howdy'd but we ain't shook yet. And I figure it's time.
And cat, you can be darned sure that if he doesn't have matching red shoes, I'll be mighty disappointed.
So, any of you fine folks from the North brave enough to join us?
Red Cowboy boots? I can picture that.

thereyet
and to match, a red communist flag wrapped around the shoulders instead of a poncho, yellow hammer and sickle flying on the back!

who are we talking about, Cat's better half? oh, I met him, can picture him on a horse with a flag
I am not tracking the first part of your post, faina, I must have missed something.
But yes, he is easy to picture on a horse, not in cowboys boots, though. Never! Think polo boots!
Red Polo boots? Is there such a thing? I would think any one wearing those might catch a hammer up his a$$.
thereyet
No, not red. That is my thing. I should have clarified!
Honestly, I think he might have been a cavalry rider in another life.
Giddyup:-"
That's what he said!
Are we planning the next GTG yet?
