Im going to San Francisco and wont have access to any automobile. How would I get from Union Square to Hendrik Point (on Marin Headlands adjacent to Golden Gate Bridge, on Marin County side) and how would I get back to Union Square? Im guessing that I could use public transportation getting to the Golden Gate and back to Union Square, ..from there, would I walk the rest of the way from the SF side of the bridge, walking across the bridge to the Marin County side, and then walking to Hendrik Point? The biggest question: how exactly do you access Hendrik Point on foot from the Marin County side of the Golden Gate bridge? Is there a pedestrian accessway or is it a road shared with automobiles?
San Francisco: from Union Square to Hendrik Point using Muni?

What is Hendrik Point? It doesn't come up in a Google search?
Cavallo Point is on the east side of the bridge. Bonita Point is to the west.
It is 1.5 miles from the south end of the GG bridge to the vista point on the east side.
I can't find Hendrick Point on any map.
I thought I was spacing out reading the two responses -- we used to hike up there but it has been years and I didn't remember the details. So I googled -- of course there is a Hendrik point.

As of last weekend, you could not walk totally across the GG Bridge as they were doing work about mid-span and it was blocked.
Well, maybe you can, but this is pretty hard to figure out:

Oh, to clarify -- my post wasn't really about walking across the bridge, or even really about the walk I linked. But more to show it describes Hendrik Point . . .
i found hendrik point using google maps and zooming in alot on the marin headlands. i was assuming hendrik point was the point most people go to for that "iconic photo shot" that shows the GG bridge, the SF skyline, as well as the Pacific Coastline of Ocean Beach. ...thats basically what Im looking for, is wherever THAT specific spot on the Headlands is it.
So weird - I googled it again, and there's tons of listings!
Is this what you are looking for? http://www.everytrail.com/guide/walking-the-golden-gate-bridge
yes tom -- same link I posted above . . . .
TomFuller I've been meaning to thank you!
A couple of months ago you were helping a poster who was inquiring about cabin/tent camping in Santa Barbara County. You suggested Lake Cachuma and via that suggestion I discovered Jalama Beach recently installed cabins. I wanted to check them out when we were in the area to see if it's something we'd enjoy doing with the pups on another trip. I thought I had never been there; turns out I had in my high school years.
Anyway, it was fun to flashback and the cabins looked nice. The Verde breakfast burrito at the Jalama Cafe was to die for! Seriously, fresh flavors were bursting everywhere. I wasn't expecting that at all. I'd probably make a side trip just for the breakfast burrito again!
Thanks for the discovery!
The bus goes over the bridge. Route 2.

I'm not sure the specific route that gets you to the bridge from Union Square but here is some MUNI maps.

Basically hop on a bus and ask the driver if all else fails.
I'm also not sure what point the famous pictures are snapped but from the link Janis provided I would say Hendrik is the one. Please post a trip report when you get done as I would really like to know.
