San Francisco: *Affordable* Hotel
I'm looking for a hotel in a 'prime' location that allows us to walk most places for less than $150 (close to $120 would be even better). Of course, I would like something nice, clean and safe as we usually stay in very nice places but since this is an extension to a work trip (sneaking in a quick weekend in SF following a conference) we don't want to spend hundreds. Interesting and somewhat nice or offbeat works too. Thank you!

Well I was going to suggest Columbus Motor Inn where I stayed when I wanted free parking and 2 bedrooms. The one bedrooms run $90 to $135. The location is good but not Union Square. It's a 5-10 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf in one direction and North Beach in the other. When we stayed there we actually walked all the way through Chinatown into Union Square. A bus line runs right in front of the hotel and one block over is a turn around for one of the cable cars. Although it's a motel, there are indoor corridors.
I was looking on tripadvisor, though, for a places in Union Square. The Chancellor Hotel gets good rewiews and has an average price of around $150 but putting in an Oct weekend, the rooms are more like $200. Another hotel that gets a decent review in that area is The Stratford. Maybe someone here knows about this hotel.
If you don't need to stay in the Union Square area, then look at Columbus Motor Inn and their sister properties. I personally enjoyed my stay there and I usually stay at more upscale hotels since I travel alot for business.

"No one knows what 'affordable' may be to you anyway."
Ummm. Did we bother to read the post? I think the statement "for less than $150 (close to $120 would be even better)" pretty well defines the poster's idea of affordable, doesn't it?
I agree that Columbus Motor Inn (also Cow Hollow Motor Inn and Chelsea Motor Inn) are good bets. Columbus Motor Inn is within "walking distance" to more things. I tend to think, in fact, that it is closer to more tourist "things" than the hotels on Union Square might be.

Hi Patrick. One of these days I am going to stay at the Cow Hollow Suites. Everytime I try to stay there, they are booked. Although I just got back from SF, will probably go again in the 5-6 weeks. I put in a few dates and they seem to sold out. This is for the end of Oct. The location is great and since I need a car for work, it is so much more convenient than driving in and out of Union Square. Ugh!!

Well, the Cow Hollow Suites and Cow Hollow Motor Inn are two different places (although related and connected by their underground parking garage). The Motor Inn would fit ritterbride's budget. The Suites would be a bit beyond it -- but of course they are full apartments, not just a motel.
And yes, Paula, it seems to take some advance planning to get the Suites.

Boy I just read my last paragragh. I really need to learn how to type.
BTW Patrick just got tickets for A Catered Affair at the La Jolla Playhouse with Harvey Fierstein, Tom Wopat, Matt Cavenaugh, Faith Prince and Leslie Kritzer. It's in previews for about a month although it doesn't open on Broadway until March 2008.

Patrick-Yes I know the Cow Hollow Motor Inn fits ritterbride's budget. But it made me think of the Suites. Not that I really need a suite for just myself but the price fits my expense budget and it would be cool to stay there at least once. I could have the SF fodorites over for a little GTG!!

Oh, Paula, if one more person posts a "great theatre" message I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Those Young Frankenstein reviews have me so itchy to see it, too bad I can't get good tickets in New York.
By the way, how's your lovely daughter doing?
