san diego/santa barbara

I don't know where my 1st posting went. Which would be better in Oct. for hubby 60th b'day. SB, SD, or Palm Desert for 3 days? Shopping so-so, laying on beach 1/2 day, seeing sights (although we are going to Sedona in March is this too much like that area?) like old town stuff and missions, a little hiking, romantic areas and hotels?

As someone who has lived in San Diego and Santa Barbara, I would say "either". A lot depends on you, the weather in October will typically be sunny in both places, but San Diego has better beaches to hang for a day. San Diego may leave you wishing you had more time as it's very large where as Santa Barbara can be easily explored in 3 days, including a 1/2 day to Santa Ynez valley for some very good wine tasting.

I would choose SB for a "long weekend".

My vote is for San Diego.

I would vote for Santa Barbara. I think it's more romantic whereas San Diego strikes me more as being family friendly. Santa Barbara has a mission that I've never seen, but I've read that it's worth a visit. If you're in Santa Barbara over a weekend, they have a nice art fair along the beach. We once rented a multi-person bike in Santa Barbara and had fun peddling around, up and down the coast.

either san diego or santa barbara. san diego's water may be slightly warmer if that's an issue for you. but, it's usually still too cold for most people's liking.

Ditch the Sedona portion of the trip. Both Santa Barbara and san Diego beat it hand's down in my book. Sedona is a glorified tourist trap, filled with t-short shops, tacky nick-knacks and overrated restaurants.

Santa Barbara has beautiful ocean vistas, great art galleries, and pretty good restaurants. San diego has perfect weather and much to do outside.

We had an anniversary trip to SB in December and fell in love with the place. We had lunch in Montecito at the Biltmore which was fabulous.

We stayed at the Harbor View Inn, www.harborviewinnsb.com and it was very nice, right across the street from Stearn's Wharf where we had lobster every day.

Shopping on State Street and meals at the Wine Cask, Olie e Limone and the Los Olivos Cafe were all excellent. We saw Sideways at the Riviera Theater there one rainy afternoon. ***kim***
