san diego zoo for couple in 20s

we're in our twenties, celebrating our 5th anniversary date - would like to check out the san diego zoo. how much time should we allocate for it if we just want to do a quick browse of the major attractions there? planning to take the tram ride tour in the park which does a round trip in 45 min.
is the park doable in 3 hours lets say? would like to plan to do other activities during the day.. thanks!

You could do it in three hours if you move fast; however I don't think you will be very happy doing it so quickly. Three hours will just skim the surface. I'd give it at LEAST half a day.

We got to the zoo when it opened and took the sky ride to the opposite end (putting us arond the polar bears). Although it wasn't too crowded early in the day, we still avoided a lot of crowds. The zoo is huge and I agree with Pat, three hours might be a bit rushed. I think we were there for 6 or 7 hours and still missed some. The tram ride tour is very nice. Especially to save some time. If I remember correctly, you can get off and on as you please throughout the zoo.

It all depends on how much you want to see. Do the tram, amd at least try and get in a half day. Sounds as though you have other ideas on your agenda for the day that you are looking forward to doing. Have fun.

Three hours is enough if you don't expect to see the whole zoo. It's worth deciding together ahead of time what animals you most want to see, then take your time at a few select exhibits.

Are you doing the bus tour at the zoo or the tram, which is at the Wild Animal Park? Big difference as far as exhibits. I'd do the Zoo as a first timer.
