San Diego to San Francisco in 15 days

Hi all, We are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 kids 7 & 11 years old.

We are planning a 2 week trip from San Diego to San Francisco. We fly into San Diego, and we will be renting a car and doing the coastal road trip upto San Francisco all in a 2 week duration. We fly out of San Francisco on day 16 of our trip. I have been reading a lot of helpful tips on this forum and am hoping you guys can guide me on a detailed itinerary on how to get the most out of our days on this trip. Where to go, what to see and how long each day/days? i am hoping to see all the possible highlights in this area!

So far this is my rough plan:

Day 1 to Day 4: San Diego (San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, Balboa Park, US Maritime Museum)

Day 5 to Day 8: LA (Disneyland only & Universal Studios)

Day 9 to Day 12: Drive up the coast to San Francisco. Plan to stay 1 night in Santa Barbara & 2 nights in Monteray/Carmel. (Big Sur, Pismo Beach, Monterey, Carmel, San Simeon, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara)

Day 13 to Day 16: San Francisco (Golden Gate, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Shopping)

Please let me know what attractions and places are a must see specially on the coastal road trip. Our interests are museums, theme parks, beaches, good food and nature. I would appreciate any and every help that i can get at this point! Thanks in advance...

When is the trip -- that makes a BIG difference. Both weather-wise and whether Hwy 1 through Big Sur will be open.

But in general -- IF you actually mean in LA you are only visiting Disneyland and Universal then you don't need 4 days there. 2 days for Disneyland and California Adventure and 1 day for Universal. So you can add one day on the coast. Two nights is not enough for Pismo Beach, San Simeon, Big Sur, Monterey, and Carmel. On night SB, one night Pismo Beach or Cambria, and two nights Monterey. 3 nights Monterey is even better so you could see the Aquarium, Mission, Point Lobos, the northern half of Big Sur, maybe kayaking.

Be advised..Highway 0ne--has a 30 mile stretch closed due to a massive mud slide and a collapsed bridge...Not expected to be cleared for travel up to a year..
therefore you cannot get from San Simeon to Monterey.
www.dot.ca.gov › Travel › Highway Conditions..will give you info.
