May book a repositioning cruise to San Diego and looking for return ideas to Portland, Oregon. Not into flying, and car rental or train are amazingly expensive. What else might I try? Cruise ends in San Diego mid October 2011. Ideally, someone wants some for of auto, even motor home, brought up to Portland around then. Thanks for any thoughts!

If you can find a ship that will take you from San Diego to Portland in less than 35 hours for less than $222 book it.
Amtrak coach using the Pacific Surfliner to LAX and the Coast Starlight LAX to Portland can be booked in coach for that price.
Sleeping in coach can be uncomfortable but I have done it for thousands of miles on Amtrak and ViaRail.

If you need a bed to sleep in from Emeryville to Klamath Falls it will cost quite a bit more.
