San Diego Sunset or La Jolla

Hi Fodor's travelers!

Finally managed to get this tagged in California

I arrive next Monday at 11:00 a.m. only have the afternoon and evening free and evenings the rest of the week.

Suggestion for must sees or tours after 5

Monday Sunset Sailboat Tour or Find a way to La Jolla. I am from the East Coast. Last trip I did go to Coronado via taxi for dinner. I will not have a car.

Thanks so much!

I dont know what your interested in. Are you a sailor and enjoy sailing or boat tours? Then that might be nice.

I dont know what you mean by Find a way to La Jolla. Is this a tour company? Or do you want to drive to La Jolla and walk around in the evening?

I'm sure sailing would be great, but we loved La Jolla. It's gorgeous, lots of good restaurants, and you can stroll by La Jolla Cove and the Children's Pool to see seals and sea lions. Try to eat at George's at the Cove if you can; the upper deck has pretty views. Also liked Brockton Villa and Cody's; check their hours to make sure they're open. Bobboi has great gelato - nice to get it to go so you can walk around. nanabee helped us plan our trip and did a great job! We enjoyed taking in a Padres game too, as well as the zoo, touring the Midway, and going up to Mt. Soledad for pretty views. There are also nice trolley tours you can take.

Thank you both, I am sorry I was vague. Yes, I like to sail, but not a sailor per se I just wanted views and moments not common on this side of the country. I have been to SF, LA etc., but something about San Diego is special. I was thinking to get in some exercise. Volcanogirl, I just changed my flight so I can grab the trolley and hit some of the spots you mentioned. Will pack a backpack and hit the beach areas. I will only have Monday on my own and free. The Midway has much history so that may be a "right after work" thing. One of my goals is to see the sun set over the pacific. Therefore, I may just take an uber to Coronado or something and watch it sink Not sure.

Sailing is not cheap, but am considering it... Thank you all for the help.

I am staying at the Renaissance in Downtown, West B Steet. I stayed in the Gas Lamp area last time. Clueless of distances. Any places worth eating and even visiting nearby?

Thanks again!

You can take the ferry over to Coronado from the dock right by the Midway, or from the other dock near the convention center. It takes just 10 minutes and is a very pleasant ride with nice views of the bridge. There are a few restaurants at the ferry landing in Coronado that will give you good views, or else you can Uber over from the ferry landing to the area near the Hotel Del Coronado if you wanted to walk around there by the beach. I think the ferry is a little more fun to take over to Coronado than an Uber or a taxi from downtown.

If you want to get in some exercise, you could take a taxi or Uber from downtown up here to La Jolla Shores and take a kayak tour of the La Jolla caves. I'm not sure what time the last tour leaves, but I just saw from my office window a group leave a little past 5:00, so you should go online and check the times for the various kayak tour companies. I've done it - it is fun and I think it lasted a bit over an hour. Check online for Groupons.

I recently ate at Juniper & Ivy, a restaurant in Little Italy run by Richard Blais, one of the Top Chef winners. I really liked it. It would be a short taxi or Uber ride from where you are staying. Right next door is his (a little more casual) restaurant called the Crack Shack that focuses on chicken.

Another fun place to eat would be Carnitas Snack Shack. It just opened on the Embarcadero right near the Midway. I haven't eaten there yet but it gets good reviews and looks like a fun place.

Not sure about taking the trolley - it doesn't seem like it would be very convenient for some of the places where you want to go, but do check the maps online. I've lived here over 9 years and have never taken it, as it isn't very convenient for where I go or where I take visitors.

We stayed at the Hotel Del and watched the sunset at the beach; that's a gorgeous place to do it if you want to see a pretty sunset.

Thank you both, Auntie, where would you suggest a person to go? One, I have canoed and kayaked for years but never the ocean and I am deathly afraid of going under... so I assume the caves etc., are calm water? I heard Uber was about 40 one way but I am going to check on that for sure. Off the wall question,
Is there a place for changing at La Jolla...?

It also looks like I will have Thursday afternoon free as well .. Yay!

Something I am noticing, when I put in google maps various places to visit from my hotel, like 2-3 miles, it makes the time to get there unreal? Like walking to the Midway from Downtown should be doable?

Thanks again!
