San Diego Marriott Coronado Island or Marriott Marquis downtown?

Hello - looking to book a 5 night trip to San Diego in January and we are looking at booking either the Marriott Coronado Island Resort and the Marriott Marquis (Harbor Drive). Does anyone have input that may help us? We have the costs just about equal (within $10 per night), and both would include a room with a balcony and view of the bay. We are traveling with a family of four, including a 10 and 12 year old. Thank you!

In the past I have read complaints of noise related to nearby railroad activity at the Marriott on Harbor Drive. Personally having stayed there we never experienced any such problems.

I wasn't terribly impressed with some of the service staff at that hotel but that inattention was quickly rectified with a few choice words.

The hotel is within walking distance to some areas.

The hotels are across from each other separated by the San Diego Bay. But they are worlds apart.

Coronado is a small residential town and the downtown Marriott on Harbor Dr is part of a busy part of the downtown San Diego area.

Just depends in what type of location you want. Even in Coronado you are literally just 5 to 10 min drive across the bridge into downtown.

With a family of 2 kids I think they would enjoy Coronado which they could bicycle around, go to the beach, play in the parks and still have quick access as a family to the S D Zoo, Balboa Park, and other areas.

Nanabee, you are such a card. FIVE minutes to downtown over THAT bridge? In the middle of the night maybe LOL.

Well maybe 15 minutes across the bridge, but with kids that age, I feel Coronado a better environment; the walking path along bay is great for rollerblading too, and the shuttle takes you across to the marvelous Del and its fabulous beaches. They'd enjoy Mission Bay for activities too and Sea World (bring $$$) for a day outing and of course the zoo and Old Town; and a ride on a clear day to Pt. Loma for sure.

I've stayed at the Coronado property and would always chose it over staying in downtown! It's not fancy but it has a wonderful pool area, a beach like no other, a charming, walkable downtown and it's clean and feels like you're a world away from everything else. It's just a few minutes over the bridge and it's part of the fun! Don't miss the fish tacos at the Brigantine and getting ice cream cones at the Hotel Del!

Just don't forget that the "beach like no other" is right at the opposite end of the "island", as are the Hotel Del and the Brigantine (whose fish tacos are not nearly as good as they used to be).

If those fish tacos are going downhill then I am going to be one sad lady next month! Thanks for the warning Barbara!

Dukey, to drive over the Coronado bridge and take the downtown (B Street) exit takes me 5-10 minutes around 9:30 on the mornings I do that drive.

Have stayed at both...very different experiences. You get the best of all worlds on Coronado. It has much flavor. But need to be prepared to take a very long high bridge back into San Diego

The Coronado Bridge takes exactly one minute to cross if no traffic. I've timed it many times!
