San Diego beaches using public transportation
Will be in San Diego (staying in the Gaslamp Quarter) in a few weeks and, weather permitting, would like to spend some time on a beach. Which beach do you recommend that I can reach using public transportation (won't have a vehicle). I mainly want a place to lay out, read or people watch on a nice beach where I can spend the majority of a day. Where should I go? And please tell me about the amenities close to/on the beach (i.e. restaurants, chair availability, etc.)

If you can easily get over to the Santa Fe Depot there is train Service to Solana Beach in north county, takes 40 minutes.

It has been awhile since I have been in S.D. but I was unaware there was public transportation tot he beach from downtown? I guess things have changed since I was there or else I had not need to get there from downtown. If being on a beach is a priority I would choose someplace close to the beach. There are so many places to allow for this option.

Go to www.sdmts.com, the web site of San Diego transit. They have an easy-to-use trip planner.

I know it isn't that far to Solana Beach, but I can't imagine going all that way when there is Coronado right across the bay.
Take the bus to Coronado, or walk down near the Star of India and take the foot ferry over. Once there, you can rent a bike or just walk. There are lots of restaurants and snack places nearby.
There are some great parks if you need some shade during the day. Spreckles Park (and the public library across the street) at 6th and Orange has lots going on, Star Park on Loma (11th) off Orange, and Sunset Park at the North Island end of Ocean Blvd (the opposite end from the Hotel Del) are all fun people watching spots.
If you rent a bike on first and Orange, follow the bike path east/south from there so you can ride under the bridge, then cut back through the golf course. Coronado is a perfect town for cycling. Just make sure you lock you bike to a rack when you leave it.

a good full day...i'd take the ferry from downtown to coronado. then as mentioned, you can rent bikes, use a taxi or walk to get around (it's not too large). can relax on the beach (no chair rentals), waunder through the hotel, plenty of restaurants in the area or there are a couple by the ferry landing. if i'm going for people watching, i like going to pacific beach. fun beach area. there is a boardwalk that runs between pacific and mission beach. lots of restaurants in the area. taxi or there would be buses that go there from downtown.

I like N. County beaches too, but Fletcher cove in Solana Beach is not that great. Coronado would be much better and using the trip planner I posted, you can get to Mission Beach in about 45 mins.

Dougies Honey, Coronado has a beautiful beach with lovely white sand and the Coronado Hotel has lovely happy hours viewing the beach (casual) and Sunday Brunch is a Special Event. My fav beach in San Diego! take the ferry near Seaport Village which is a nice stroll as well.

I agree with gong to Coronado. As said, the 901 bus will take you there. If you want to make a more leisurely trip take the 15 mins Ferry to the Coronado Ferry Landing. Have a look around there and then take the #904 to the beach / village.

We were in downtown San Diego in 2009 without a car. Easily enjoyed the city with public transportation. We spent a wonderful day biking around Coronado as recommended and the beach there was lovely.
We also took the bus to La Jolla and had a gorgeous day there. That was a bus ride that involved a change over at the main bus station but it was very easy to navigate (and I say this as a person who generally has a small amount of anxiety around managing bus routes and stops unless I am very familiar with them).
Have a wonderful trip.
