mrschops, the Zoo is wonderful there and I suggest that you do not miss it. It is adjacent/part of Balboa Park, and we had a wonderful time there as well (lots of different museums). That is very walkable, and there are shuttles as well once your feet wear out. Between those, that would be 2 or 3 days anyway. Link: http://www.balboapark.org/
For another day, spend at Old Town: http://www.oldtownsandiegoguide.com/
Some will suggest Coronado Island, perhaps La Jolla, or other areas. Depends on your interests, of course.

Thanks everyone. Sorry I was so vague, new to the site!
We fly to LA, pick up a car drive straight to SD for 4 nights, then 3 in Palm Springs, then on to Las Vegas to meet up with pals for a 60th Birthday.
We chose SD to extend the LV trip. We did a month last year in an RV from SanFransisco, down the coast then inland, covering many National Parks. We spent time at Lake Powell, LAke Mead, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion Park, Monument Valley, Yosemite, Death Valley. We went as far as The Four Corners, then back towards LV for just 4 days.
I have bought guide books and have many maps and spent two solid days last week online and with the books and maps, then highlighted possibilities on the maps. We cannot do it all in 4 days, so was asking advice on the best options to do/ not.
We enjoy local history but not necessarily Museums, love the coast, scenery, exploring local events, markets, car events, we have done baseball. I am not sure if my hubby will do Seaworld, would need to persuade him.
I hope that helps?

Just a start: Balboa Park including museums, zoo, Cabrillo National Monument, USS Midway Museum, San Diego Padres at Petco Park, Point Loma, Catalina Island with a visit to the Hotel Del Coronado, walk on Pacific Beach, eat in Little Italy with it's many excellent dining choices. Have fish tacos too.

Just a few things to consider:
The Mission http://www.missionsandiego.org
Gas Lamp quarter,
Little Italy
The zoo,
Lunch or brunch at the Del Coronado http://hoteldel.com/about-our-san-di...-del-coronado/
A Padres game (I think they are back home on the 31st)
Balboa Park http://www.balboapark.org
Tour the Midway http://www.midway.org

If you enjoy water or beach activities I would recommend La Jolla Cove and or the La Jolla Shores. The ocean temps have been in the mid 70's which is very warm for ocean water here.
Both are underwater preserves and you can swim, snorkle, kayak, look at tidepools, etc.
