Hi all...I am traveling to San Antonio in September for a few days. Is it worth the extra money to stay on/near the Riverwalk? If so or not, any recommendations for hotels that are not overly pricey? Thanks!

Well, it was "worth it" to me, but I don't know your standards!
Yes, it's worth it for most people, including us. What's your budget?
not extremely high! =) Just want's sure if all the hype was for real or a disappointment...thanks for the input
Probably trying for something under 150....
We stayed at the Marriot Rivercenter and were very happy with our room. It's in a great location, right on the riverwalk.
Marriot Riverwalk
Westin Riverwalk
Hyatt Riverwalk
Watermark (the nicest - frankly don't know if they have rates under $150 but worth a check)
Menger - historic updated hotel about 1 block away
Emily Morgan - historic updated hotel about 1 block away
Just to name a few
thanks!
Drury Inn and the Holiday Inn on the Riverwalk are also good options.
It really depends on your preference. Are you coming for work? Is the Riverwalk a major reason you're coming? It is nice to do (we live here but stayed there for husband's 40th) but the Riverwalk is not the only thing to do in SA. Personally, I would probably eat a meal or two there and also try out some other terrific restaurants in town.
is the riverwalk area more crowded on the weekend? we have a choice of visiting during the week or weekend. would prefer less crowds. this wouldn't be till april
Follow_your_bliss....I am going for vacation....the riverwalk is not a major reason I am going, but I'd like to be centrally located...if you have other recommendations, I'd love to hear them...thanks!
You will definitely find it less crowded during the week.
I'm a new resident of San Antonio, so there are other people who know more about the city than I do. But if it were me, I'd stay on the riverwalk. It's centrally located, close to lots of restaurants, and it's a very pleasant place to walk in the evenings. I assume you're renting a car, so you'll be able to go eat and see the sights in other areas of town as well.
In my limited experience, the riverwalk is more crowded on the weekends, but it isn't unreasonabe.
The only place other than downtown I would consider staying for vacation is the Hyatt Hill Country Resort otherwise I would stay downtown for access to better restaurants, museums, the Mission Trail, the architecture and feel of downtown which I think is quite special and unique.
There are a lot of great discounts available through the San Antonio Convention and Visitor's Bureau's website (http://save.visitsanantonio.com/).

Hope you enjoy your stay!
My sister got us a great rate through priceline at the Emily Morgan. It's right next door to the Alamo and within walking distance to the RiverWalk. We also enjoyed taking the trolley to the Mexican Market/Mi Tierra and also the Guenther House and walking around the King William district. The trolley stop is close to the Emily Morgan. The only heads up is that parking is pricey.
I highly recommend the Guenther House for breakfast. Pleasant setting and very good food.
As far as the riverwalk. I think everyone should see it once and the Alamo. I agree with the marriott suggestion. I have also stayed at the Hyatt. 1 night is enough unless you are going to an event. Then go out to the Hyatt Hill Country. WORTH the money. hands down! I have a hard time staying any place else.
