Salt Lake City - Yellowstone - recommended route and things to see
Hi again everyone
Im after suggestions for the drive from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone.... which routes are recommended and how many driving hours should we allow? Are there any interesting places to stop and see on the way?
Is it relatively easy to find accomodation in the Yellowstone vicinity in early September?

I think the more scenic and interesting route is I-15 to US89 though Logan, UT and past Bear Lake to Montpelier and then Smoot, Afton and Alpine to Jackson, WY. From though Grand Teton NP to Yellowstone. When I drive this route I'm in no hurry and stop to enjoy the scenery, etc and it takes me about 8 hours.
The quicker alternative I use is to stay on 15 until Idaho Falls and the 20 to West Yellowstone.
In West Yellowstone you shouldn't have a problem finding rooms in early Sept. In the Park itself, likely to be more difficult.

West Yellowstone is the only town at the west entrance of the park. It takes about 6 hours to go the second way boomboom suggested. There isn't that much to visit along the way--and I grew up in that area!! The Herriman Railroad Ranch near Island Park is really interesting and is right off the main road.
The great thing about September is that the elk are in rut--gorgeous to listen to the males bugle. But be warned--DO NOT get near a bull elk at this time and under no circumstances get anywhere near a bull moose--including in your car!!
West has plenty of hotel and dining options. It means more driving but more eating/sleeping options. Not to mention, you very well may not be able to get a room in the park at this date--but its worth a look!
