Salt Lake City to Tahoe to Yosemite or San Fran
I am planning a road trip (end of June) with my family of teenagers from the Salt Lake City Utah area to Tahoe (2 nights) and then on to San Fran or Yosemite. We want to spend a couple of days/nights in both San Francisco and Yosemite (or a day in Yosemite). My question is this: Is it better to go to Yosemite from Tahoe then to San Fran or San Fran then Yosemite?
We will then be traveling down PCH to Monterey/Carmel, Santa Barbara, and eventually Newport. We will be doing this in a little over a week and then will stay in Newport 5 days. Not big into sightseeing as much as adventure. We like hiking, biking, beaching, surfing, eating, and picture taking. We like to stay in very clean accomodations. Lodges, cabins okay as long as they're clean. Thoughts/suggestions?

Go from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite via the backside, driving down to Bridgeport. Your family might also be interested in the Bodie Historical State Parkon the eastern side of the Sierra: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=509

Assuming Tioga pass is open, then I'd do Tahoe to Yosemite to SF and down the coast from there.
But we can't know right now if the road will be open or not. It usually is before late June but we are not having a typical winter.
The problem is you must book your Yosemite accommodations ASAP. So to be on the safe side, I'd do Tahoe to SF to Yosemite then across to the Monterey area and down the coast. That way you will have dates certain.

Is this your own car or a one way rental?
When it's on time, the westbound California Zephyr leaves SLC at 11:30PM MT (never earlier) and gets to Reno about 10 hours later (8:30AM PT). Rent a car in Reno and return it there and either fly home or take the train overnight back to SLC.
If you wanted to go further on the train, get off in Sacramento (mid afternoon).

It saves the long boring trip on I-80 from SLC to Reno and gets you to Reno in the morning with enough time to rent a car and go to Tahoe or to Yosemite.
My next trip is from Winnemucca to Chicago (roomette) and the Lake Shore Limited to Erie PA (Business Class) in May.
Sleeping on the train when I would otherwise be sleeping in a hotel room is my specialty.
