Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe to Riverside, CA
Late September to early October we are driving from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe where we will spend 6 nights, then to Riverside, CA. We want to spend a night along 395 on our way to Riverside.
I very much enjoy photo opts and would like a suggestion of possible routes from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe as well as suggestions of where to stop for a night on our way to Riverside, CA. Is there a more interesting part of 395? Should we leave more time for photo opts on the first half or last half of the trip from Lake Tahoe to Riverside?

Oh and . . . I know you said you are going to SLT -- most of my trips are based at North Shore, but sometimes even when going to the south end I head up I-80 and drive around the lake. It is very scenic whether you drive around the east or west sides. If you mainly want to get to South Shore then Hwy 50 or 88 would be your routes.

I'd probably stop over in Lone Pine -- not 'interesting' as such but it is just over the half way point, has a visitors center and is near Death Valley if you have time for a detour the next morning.
On your drive between SLT and Lone Pine you can take the detour in to Bodie (HIGHLY recommended)
