Trip Report Ruidoso Trip Report

Let me first say and make this very clear to everyone .. do not, I repeat, DO NOT book anything for the weekend of Aspenfest as is known the motorcycle festival .. think 22,000 loud and I mean LOUD motorcycles roaring all day and late into the night .. you can't get anywhere without running into traffic and basically not being able to enjoy anything with out the crowds everywhere .. now if your a motorcycle fan, this may be up your alley and worth checking out .. this is my opinion with respect to all the motorcycle riders but I just dont get the un muffled wide open pipes ...

Arrived on a Friday and stayed at the Pinecliff resort for a week .. located west of Ruidoso on the main highway 70, so if you are looking for a central located place near the casinos. Super Walmart and downtown, great location .. you will be able to hear highway traffic, it is not a quiet cabin secluded in the surrounding hills .. nice place, nice people and clean ..

Saturday we attempted to visit Cloudcroft but the over whelming motorcycle crowds prohibited any parking or shopping .. ventured down the highway to the Sunspot and Apache solar observatories and that was very interesting to see and learn something .. the drive and lookouts were very beautiful to stop at .. drove back to Ruidoso with a long snake of cycles ahead and behind us ..

Sunday woke up, lazed around till 11 to watch the Cowboys and then head to the beautiful Inn of the Mountain Gods casino and resort for brunch at the buffet.. beautiful place to visit .. brunch was excellent, they have all sorts of food from green chili southwest dishes, oriental, Italian and more to huge salad and dessert bar .. visited the main lobby and one could become immersed in the native flute music and huge fountain and majestic view of the mountains and lake .. saw several people whom had nodded off it was so peaceful .. went to the casino .. wife played while I sat in the sports bar and watched the Cowboys lose ..

Monday we traveled to Smokey Bear's grave and visitor center .. interesting to see and learn of this feller .. ventured on down to Lincoln and visited the town of Billy the Kid fame .. lot of history there but not much to it .. not really built up as a tourist town which is good .. visited Ft Stockton and there is not much there but its history .. then drove 12 mile up to Ski Apache which took about an hour due to really winding road .. beautiful drive but for the weak at heart of heights, could be scary ..

Tuesday we left early and ventured out to Three Rivers Petoglyphs to see the rock art .. this is a really neat place to visit .. hundreds of art carving abound for one to find and ponder about its meanings .. it is a tough climb around the rocks and you can slip and fall as I did but there is a laid out walk way that stair steps up the hill .. they say it is a half mile but it seemed longer .. really wore our selves out on this hike but it was well worth the effort and fall .. please take time to visit here, plenty of picnic tables, shade trees and bathrooms ..

Next up we headed south to White Sands .. all I can say is WOW .. very unusual place to be in .. there is a paved road that turns into a carved out roadway in the dunes themselves .. it is such a wonderful experience but hot even when it is cool .. lots of places to sled down the dunes, picnic and bathrooms .. you can rent the sleds at the visitors center .. funny thing is there is a sign as you enter the park that tells you not to take the sand ..

Rested Wednesday cause of rain .. heated pool and hot tub at the condo to use .. Thursday walked Ruidoso downtown area and hit the Billy the Kid casino at the horse track .. decent cheese burger with green chilies on top and wife got a huge chicken fried steak .. casino small but ok ..

All in all a nice place to visit and will be going back again someday to visit other places around Ruidoso... we felt we got jipped out of 2 beautiful days cause of the motorcycle fest .. didn't really eat out at all, cooked on the grills at the condo mostly .. friendly people there that seem to value each visitor cause they know you are their life blood in spending your hard earned money there ..
