Royal Lahaina?

I'm booking some reservations for friends and was thinking about the Royal Lahaina. I've stayed next door at the Kaanapali Villas and loved it, but they want to be near the beach and the oceanside rooms are out of their price range, while the RL has more reasonable rooms in the main tower, near the beach. The RL is gets positive reviews in many guides, yet I keep seeing forum messages inferring that the place has problems. i'd like some comments on what's wrong (or right) with the place. Thanks!

I stayed at the Royal Lahina and I thought it was great. The staff was wonderful, the rooms were very nice and the breakfast buffet they put out every morning is the best I have ever seen. Plus they have a great beach and it was never crowded. I will definitely stay there the next time I am in Maui. We also attended the Royal Lahina Luau and it was very good.

When did you stay there? We stayed there on our honeymoon 25.5 years ago and loved it. When we went back last summer for our 25th anniversery I wanted to stay there but did not because of all the stuff written about how nasty it had become. We are going back in Jan. and still don't have a place to stay and would stay there if it's been fixed up.

Aloha

We were in Maui 5-6 yrs ago. Did not stay at the Royal Lahaina but visited there to see the Banyan Tree which is awesome as it covers an entire block! When planning our trip, we had thought of staying there but did not and once we saw the location we were sorry. The location is wonderful. I walked into the lobby and it was very nice.

I am a past poster as I stayed at the Royal Lahaina in June 2001 and wanted to warn folks. It is run down, bugs in rooms, very average pool, expensive breakfast buffet. The location is good for snorkeling at Black Rock, but we were much happier when we moved to the Kaanapali Beach Hotel on the other side of Black Rock. It is the most inexpensive place to stay in that area and has been recently renovated.
