No idea if there are any hostels along the way. But there are campgrounds.
Check out the area just north of Monterrey (a few miles) as they have some good bargains. From there - if you left early - you could drive through Big Sur - maybe stopping for coffee/a snack at Nepenthene- http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/ (you might even check the rates there and other places in Big Sur).
Then suggest you at least stop at the Visitor's center at Hearst Castle (San Simeon)- after having pulled over to see the Elephant Seals a couple miles north of there.
A couple miles south of there is lovely Cambria and from there - it's a fairly straight forward shot into LA, about 350 miles - doable in 7 hours or so. http://www.mapquest.com/
It would be a long but very scenic day.
So, for the first day i can stay near Carmel, and get up early and drive during the day to SF.
I would stay near Cambria the first night, not Carmel. Carmel is only a couple hours from SF.
You would probably find cheaper lodging in San Luis Obispo. You are driving from SF to LA right?
Cambria, Morro Bay, and San Luis Obispo are good candidates for a one night stay about half way on your trip. All three have Hostels. See: http://www.hostelhandbook.com/usa/cacc.htm
It's only about 4 hours from lovely Cambria to incredible and astonishing LA, per both Google Maps and Mapquest.
i will drive, depart arrive 6 or 7 a.m from SF and get Route 1.
Now its time to look for places to visit in first and second day.
Is Monterey region a good to stop and visit some places?
Is there some place that i can dive?
tnks my friendss
There are a number of dive shops in the Monterrey area, and a couple are along Cannery Row. Just google away. I got certified in the bay. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17utqkJIfj8
You can also dive in the Pt. Lobos reserve/park - but not sure about what areas are open to scuba - or what permits you might need? http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=571
And yes, I think Monterrey is a good place to stop and visit - including the Aquarium and if you want to spring for the $10? - taking the 17 mile drive to Carmel.
Diving definitely complicates things. SF to say San Luis Obispo down the scenic coastal route is a nearly 6 hour drive - and that's w/o any stops or sightseeing.
Fitting in 3 or 4 hours for diving, plus meals, and stops at any of the amazing sites along the way and you are talking about a minimum 12 or 13 hours on the road. If you want to dive you really need to add another day/night.
Baloney. You can leave early from SF - be diving well before noon - and then on the way to somewhere in Big Sur or around San Simeon/Cambria in a couple more hours.

BTW - great Hostel list by dbdurand. Never knew about those inexpensive options.
Many tnks, i wont dive this time.
see ya.
Hey...
Is there good night life in Cambria, Morro Bay or San Luis Obispo? like some pubs or restaurants.
I really wanna stay in cheap places but i wanna visit different places around route 1.
tnks,
Juliano.
San Luis Obispo is a university town and has more night life, bars and variety of restaurants. Very fun!
So Juliano - you have received plenty of advice.

Any better idea of how your Western adventure is going to unfold?
Yeahh.. i´m going to sleep in San Luis, during the day pass the time in the coast.. loll
see ya...
