Romantic weekend in Minneapolis?

I am looking for a hotel recco for a romantic weekend in Minneapolis in May. I am surprising my boyfriend with a trip to Minneapolis for his birthday. Also, would love a restaurant recco. We live in New York. He went to school at the U. Many thanks in adavance.

The Graves 601 Hotel is a rather swank place with a good location at the edge of the Warehouse District. May will be a good time to visit -- downtown is compact enough to easily get from anywhere to anywhere without freezing. What kind of restaurant suggestions are you looking for?

Le Meridien in Minneapolis..... beautiful hotel and many great restaurants within a walk... I'd recommend Zelo.

All 3 of the recommendations you got are excellent. The Nicollet Island Inn is an old fashioned brick building on an island in the Mississippi; the other two are more urban and contemporary but lovely. I adore the bar on the 2nd floor of Le Meridien, so even if you choose another hotel, go there for a drink. My daughter is at the U right now; the campus has a good restaurant called Kafe 421 in Dinkytown that we really like. It is small and owned by a greek family but they don't just offer greek food. It has a nice ambiance and good homemade desserts. If you visit the U that would be a good lunch or dinner choice. There is a contemporary art museum on campus, the Wiesman, that has a fun gift shop too...and the U bookstore and Commons would be a fun stop. Levain was recently chose as the best restaurant in Mpls. I also like Chino Latino in Uptown; young crowd & spicy food. 20.21 is the restaurant at the new Walker Art museum in Mpls...the view is great and so is the food. (I like the Walker's new digs very much, but prefer the art at the Mpls. Art Institute!) There is a new light rail system in the city that just opened last year, so it might be fun to stay near that. Have a great time!
