My husband and I are seeking suggestions for a 12 day camping trip we are taking late Sept. We'll be driving from MN to NE national parks. We are both very active, athletic, experienced campers. Would like to spend most of our time in up-state NY, Vermont and Maine.
Seeking Advice:
1. Best driving route - Canada around Great Lakes?
2. Suggested must see National Parks and campgrounds
3. Interested in Lake Placid and the Adirondack Mtns, Acadia N. Park. Is 12 days realistic? 4-5 days driving and 6 days in the NE. Can we squeeze in a day or 2 in Canada?
Much thanks.

Can't give you too much help but I've always wanted to do the trip around Lake Superior. If it were me I'd drive through Canada on the way out there - the leaves should be near peak color in late September and there are some great provincial parks along Lake Superior. You're probably best off posting a topic about that on the Canada forum.
You might get some useful ideas of places to see on the way at www.drivecrosscountry.net which will give you ideas re Canada as well as northern New England. Check routes E, J (outer loop) and the beginning of route M.
Is 12 days realistic? That's up to you and many times the weather affects travel time. Our approach is to set a general itineray and then take our time to enjoy our travels -- if we see that time is running short we know that our next trip can start where this one leaves off. You can be flexible as you probably will not need reservations in late September unless you're in northern NE on weekends when the fall colors peak.
This is my favorite time of year in Northern Mn but be sure you have reservations because everyone else loves it too. I'm not sure if you are renting a car at the the MPls airport or what but the North Shore drive around Superior is fantastic and I could help you with a list of great campgrounds and sites to see on that portion of the trip. We drove around the Northern shore of Lake Superior about 30 years ago and the beauty there is fantastic as well. I would go through Canada, having done both. i'm sure you know to pack warm clothes.
