We are planning a trip to myrtle beach in August. Traveling with 2 children ages 5 and 8 as well as my parents who are 73 and 67. Wondering if anyone has any advice to avoid rush hour in the am in the major cities along the way. We will be spending 1 night somewhere along the way there as well as the way back home. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Depending on where you are in NH, you will have to time your trip to miss rush hour in NYC. For me in central CT that means leaving at about 4AM. Going on a Saturday or Sunday will make life easier.
I would also think you might consider taking the Tappan Zee Bridge and going down the Garden State. at least until it crosses 95. If the trip down is part of the fun, go down Garden State to Cape May and take the ferry to Lewes DE, then go down the Delmarva to Chincoteague for the night and let the kids see the ponies. Continue south to the Bay Bridge/Tunnel and decide if you want to wander down the coast or head back to the hwy.
Also look at the sports schedules as an event in NY or NJ can cause tie ups when you might not expect them.
A longer but usually less stressfull way is to take 91 to 84 to 81 and head south then cross back east when you are in VA.
Plan your trip through Scranton PA and take I-81 to spend the night near Harrisburg PA.
US 15 is not too bad to get to Frederick MD and I-270 to hook into the Beltway west of Washington DC to get back to I-95.
It is a bit farther but if you are planning on 2 days anyway, it may be worth it to avoid driving a lot of miles in NJ traffic
