Road trip NYC to Dallas
My 25-year-old son and I are taking an 8 day road trip to move him (and all of his things) from NYC to Dallas. We want to experience things that we can't find anywhere else. We will have time to take a hike one day (we appreciate beautiful scenery) so a specific trail suggestion (around 6 miles round trip) would be great. Some places to stop may include: Luray Caverns, Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville (NC), Nashville, Memphis (should we visit Graceland?) and Little Rock or Hot Springs (Ark). Someone suggested that we should skip the Skyline Drive and just get on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Do you agree? I want to make this a really fun trip filled with awesome memories for us. All suggestions as to where we should visit would be appreciated. Thanks for your input and help!

The Parkway is beautiful==for a limited number of miles. It is 45MPH, and you cannot pull a trailer, if that is part of this move. And you could hike off of it.
The area around Asheville, north or south, is lovely. A warning would be that if it is a cloudy day, the parkway can be above the cloud cover.
Get a map and take a look. If you want to go to Graceland, do so. You might also enjoy Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
there is much to see and you have a nice length of time. You will have to say what is your interest and connect those dots on the map to hit them.

I've driven both and both are well worth it. I do prefer the southern end of Skyline Drive though. I'd skip Luray Caverns, have been there in the past and just did not find it all that interesting. I did love Charlottesville but that would be a detour for you.

On Little Rock vs. Hot Springs: Little Rock offers the Clinton Presidential Library and the Civil Rights Museum (both can be done in one day).
Hot Springs offers hiking and other outdoor activities. The maps for Ouachita National Forest are here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/ouachita/maps-pubs. You want the trails near Jessieville or Mt. Ida (preferably Jessieville).
You could also go to Lake Ouachita State Park, about 8 miles north of Hot Springs, where you can rent a boat or walk the trails.

Hot Springs is a popular vacation spot for people from Dallas, so it's likely that your son would want to come back for the ambiance and activites in the town (it's a great town for artists and musicians). He probably would be less likely to make a visit to Little Rock, so LR would be my choice on this trip.

btw, I love Dallas (aside from the freeways!) and Texas. I hope your son does as well!! The American Airlines Magazine recently had a great article called "Dallas Reborn" describing the increased focus on local neighborhoods. I was there last October in the Bishops Arts District and there are many additional new/old wonderful areas. Looking forward t a return visit.
