Road trip next summes...Suggestions ?

Hi !

We are a family of four: 2 adults and 2 kids (7 and 3). We are slowly planning our next vacations. At first we thought about going oversea, but maybe money won't be ther to realy enjoy it. The idea of making a road trip in Usa now came as a viable option. I'm looking to get some suggestions or advice about it. here,s wahat I think you should know about us !

1) we have 6 weeks of vacation (july 6 to august 16)
20 we Live in Montreal
2) Budget can be has much as 7000$
3) We have a minivan so we can bring our camping gear with us
4) we have cross canada from East to west , so we are looking to go elsewhere.
5) in Usa we've already been to New-York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington. We also have travel the northern part (from Seattle to Buffalo)

Thanks in advance !

Consider doing some of the great US National parks. I would guess the kids would get a kick out of Yellowstone, especially the baby bison and elk as well as some of the thermal features, maybe a ride on a river or on the lake. Get them hiking a bit.

Another would be Dinosaur NP on the northern Utah/Colorado border, good museum in nearby Price.

Well, the first suggestion made is one you've done but didn't have in your list.

I went to Yellowstone several years ago with a friend. Then this past summer I took my daughter and granddaughter there.

I never get tired of wildlife and scenery. Even if I've been there before.

I'm originally from Montreal as well although I've been living in South Florida for over 20 years.

With the time you have I might consider Yellowstone NP and Grand Tetons NP (WY), Glacier NP (MT) and Banff & Jasper in Alberta.

They're not that far apart and are quite different. Loads of different types of hikes as well as wildlife.

On one of my trips to Banff I came across a French speaking family from Montreal (I think). They took their kids out of school for a year and home schooled them while they travelled. Their web site was written on the back of their camper so I started to follow them.

While their trip is over, their web site is still there. Why not check it out to get ideas. They ended up in South America.

Well that time of year I woudn;t head for the south - in most places it will just be TOO hot and humid )or incedibly hot in most places in the SW).

What about CA and the western parks in the more northern area?

You say you've done Canada east to west - but have you done the Maritimes? That with Maine and New England would be a great summer vacation.

What about flying out to California and renting a small motor home for a few weeks to explore the national parks and coastline. Can even add in bordering states if time permits. You will save considerably on your meals and not have to have a separate car rental and hotel costs. The kids will be able to stretch out or rest and play while you drive from one place to the next. And having a bathroom with you will be invaluable. You won't have to have a strict itinerary so can take your time and see what you want. My husband and I traveled often like this with our kids when they were little and we thought it worked out great.

Myer: thanks for the link and idea, i'll take a good look at this ! You are right about not getting bored about wildlife, and it,s true that we can enjoy going back to Yellowstone. the same goes for Jasper and Banff I guess. Of course we could try to do untravelled place on the way.

Nytraveler: We have done the Maritimes for 1 month 3 years ago,so we are looking to go elsewhere. You are right about the South being too hot. Also we think that our kids would probably enjoy Disney a bit more ine 2 or 3 years.

Michel_d: that sound like a gnice vacantion planning but that would cost as much as going europe : plane ticket (2500$) renting the rv (3500$) add food, gaz and we are easily over 10K. If we got such a budget we would rather go in Europe than roadtrippin USA.
