Road Trip I40

My kids are moving home from Tennessee in February or March 2007. They are planning on taking I40 all the way to California. I am interested in the road conditions and weather during this time of year. Any help at all will be appreciated. Will they hit any severe weather---snow---should they take a different route.???Thanks Mom Shell

It does snow occasionally in Tn and Ark in Feb/March, but not too likely. Even when it does, the interstates are usually only affected for a day or so. Not sure about farther west.

Can't attest to the entire stretch but...in NM it can close down due to weather [snow, ice and even sometimes fog]. More chance of that in Feb than in March.

Hope this helps...

Stay tuned to the weather channel at night and do what has to be done. No way to tell. I got caught on I70 in February one time.

I-40 was closed last week through eastern New Mexico because of the big snow storm.

Road conditions will probably be fine in February or March, but they will want to check when the time gets closer.

We stayed on I-10 for our TX trip, which we just returned from today. Our decision not to take I-40 in December was definitely weather related.

No one can predict the WX. This site will give current weather/road conditions.

The stretch of I-40 that passes through Northern Arizona can become icy and snow packed during winter storms, particularly the area around Flagstaff. Tire chain requirements or road closures do occur, though they are rare. Though March is notorious for those late season snowstorms, so it definitely bears watching. For road conditions in Arizona, a helpful site is www.az511.com. I'd tell the kids not to schedule themselves too tightly in case they are delayed or detoured by the weather.
