Road trip fron San Francisco to Seattle

Hi everyone,
My husband and I are planning a road trip from San Francisco to Seattle. Dates probably early August. We are from South Africa so we are quite accustomed to long distances. We are spending a week or so in New York first, the flying to either San Diago or San Francisco where we plan to start our trip to visit our son in Seattle. The duration of the trip - no longer than a week or so. We would like to rent a car (even though you drive on the "wrong" side of the road!) and experience some "non-touristy" destinations. Anyones advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Let me suggest that you skip San Diego if you want to stop and see/do/experience some things on your way to Seattle. With just a week for the drive, you may want to drive the scenic route part of the time, and move inland to drive on I-5 when you need to cover more ground.

In addition to the coast - don't miss the Oregon coast! - there are mountain national parks to be visited, including Crater Lake and Mt. Hood in Oregon, Mt. Rainer and Olympic National Parks in Washington.

I'm assuming you will do some sightseeing with your son once you get to Seattle.

The highlights from Los Angeles driving north include Highway 1 from Malibu to Monterey, San Francisco, the redwoods of northern California, the Oregon coast from Brookings to Cannon Beach, the Columbia River Gorge, and Mt. Rainier,.

Significant detours include Yosemite and Crater Lake National Parks.

August will be in the middle of tourist season so I think most places will be touristy or too far off the beaten path to be practical in your time frame.

I think one of the prettiest parts of the Oregon coast is between Florence and Lincoln City- many small, scenic places to stay- and things to see. I would plan a couple of days at least in that area.

Looks like your first post on Fodor's - welcome!

From San Diego to Seattle, a week is not very much time, particularly if you want to spend any time in the cities - San Diego, LA, San Francisco or Portland - en route. Even a week from SF is not very much time, but far more achievable.

SF to Seattle is a very popular route, and many posters on travel sites - Fodor's, TripAdvisor etc. - have suggested various itineraries. Mine is fairly straightforward - https://goo.gl/maps/iLoSkEDTzT32

From San Francisco you cross the Golden Gate then head north on Calif. Hwy 1 along the beautiful Sonoma and Mendocino County coasts, then connect with US 101 at the south end of the redwoods. You continue through the redwoods (stunning, not to be missed) to the southern and central Oregon coast.

You then head inland to visit Mount Hood, the Hood River Valley, and the Columbia River Gorge before visiting Portland and continuing north to Seattle.

This gives you a terrific sampling of the many landscapes in this part of the country - rocky coastline, the amazing redwoods, a glaciated volcano and valleys filled with orchards and vineyards, then the many waterfalls and vista points along the Gorge.

If this appeals, we can help on timing, or on alternatives that might better suit your timing and aims.
