Road trip from So. California to Charlotte, NC

Planning a road trip from Southern California to NC to look at possible future homes. Will be on the road with a friend, camping most of the way to and from, and perhaps once we get there, to cut down on costs. Recommendations for cheeeep but safe motels around Charlotte or outlying areas. Would also need to meet up with a realtor to show us some homes while there.
