Road Trip from Miami, Fl to El Pso Txas

Hi, I am moving from Miami to El Paso to do one year of internship. I have decided to drive with my husband and take this opportunity to see other cities we haven't visit. I have to be at El Paso by the 1rst of August and we are planning to start the trip Saturday 27. We are not planning to spend to much time on each place, we just want to drive, stretch, eat, sleep and if time allows visit one or two popular places/cities.

I thought about visiting Georgia (only if there is anything really interesting to visit), Alabama, Missouri and Louisiana, we also want to pass by Austin Texas.

Any suggestions?

You might want to post your question on the Road Trip forum on Trip Advisor. But you need to inlcude some ideas of your interests. It's a waste of everyone's time to suggest places to visit if we don't know what interests you.

And, yes, Austin is definitely worth a visit, but I would not attempt to suggest what you should see there without know what would interest you about Austin.

Georgia is out of your way. You should just cut across Florida to the Redneck Riviera and stick to I-10. New Orleans, San Antonio are both on the way to The Pass.

Georgia and Missouri are out of your way.
If you could start out Friday evening and stay in northern Florida It would make the following days easier.
The most direct route would be to stay a night in Biloxi MS.
The newish casino rooms there should be cheap and right on the Gulf. I like San Antonio better than Austin. State Capitol or the Alamo and Riverwalk?
West Texas is nothing but miles and miles of miles and miles.
I feel sorry for anyone who willingly moves to El Paso in August.

Not far from El Paso is Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe National Parks. Visit Guadalupe about the last week in October or the first two weeks in November. I have backpacked there and also hiked to Guadalupe Peak, which is the tallest peak in Texas. Strange, but really good fall colors right in this area. I would see the bats at Carlsbad in the summer. Then visit the actual cave whenever(summer or winter)(do the wild cave tours and slaughter cave there too-must have reservations well in advance).

Doesn't help you for your trip out there, but might give you a 4 or 5 long weekends. Be sure and see the bats exit the cave and enter in the morning as well, both are spectacular.

If you happen to like Waterparks, What I consider as the best one anywhere is The Schlitterbahn. Since most places will be blazing hot, it is somewhere you might consider if you like that type of thing.

longhorn55, sorry if I didn't put my question in the right place, this is my first time using this page... However, I am very thankful with all your responses.

BigRuss, we have decided to visit Georgia any other time and stick to I-10 as you recommended.

tomfuller, we will start Friday afternoon (my husband works that day) and stay in Tampa (we have family there). The second day we are planning to drive to New Orleans and stay there, we want to visit Bourbon street. The 3rd day to San Antonio (we also have family there.) We have decided to visit River walk! And the last and fourth day we will drive to El Paso.

spirobulldog, thanks a lot for your recommendations for my stay in El Paso, I/ll need them

Wow, memories! PRM (can I call you that?) - we made this trip last year, from El Paso to Orlando - bringing our son's truck back while he went to Afghanistan.

You'll do this in reverse, but -

El Paso to San Antonio - this was our first day, and we got into San Antonio right at hotel check-in time - 3ish. If you have time, this would be a nice full day stop (2 nights) so you could enjoy the Riverwalk, Alamo, the historic Market Square (good place for tex-mex restaurant). http://www.sanantonio.gov/marketsquare/ If you only have the night, you'll need to choose, even though they are all pretty close. If you DO have the 2nd night, don't miss the Hall of Horns (Buckhorn Museum) for a mind-boggling horn museum; have a Lone Star beer too - http://www.buckhornmuseum.com/pages/buckhornmuseum.html

From San Antonio, we went to Mobile and stopped for the night. That was a full day. Now, New Orleans was on the way but required a southbound exit; sorry I cannot comment on that timeframe. I can say that I have traveled from Orlando to Biloxi (not as far as New Orleans) for work and that is a day's dreary drive.

We were greatly (and pleasantly) surprised by the beautiful scenery (with mountains on the Mexico side) toward El Paso. After you've passed San Antonio, the farther west you go, the more scenic you may find it.

I think, with your time frame, you have time for 2 nights in New Orleans and 2 nights in San Antonio - ?
