Hello All-
We are leaving this Thursday to drive from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Duck North Carolina in the Outer Banks. We are stopping in DC on the way out and trying to decide which wayto go on the way back...through williamsburg (hear there is a terrific water park), cumberland, pittsburgh, or through West Virginia.
We have young kids who are 5,4,3 and while the history is certainly interesting to us, we need to combine it with fun stuff for the kids. We won't be camping, don't mind paying for accomodatins (although the greenbrier seems to pricey for our situation) does anyone have any helpful insight for our trip back? Thanks in advance.
Nancy.

Williamsburg is fine for the young folks-plenty of open space to walk but from DC, it would involve a good drive back down south.Consider the Cacapon State Park in Berkeley Springs,WV.There are affordable, modern cabins or lodge/motel rooms with tons of deer, kids activities, campfires, tremendous golf, etc. Check your map but I think it's an easy ride back towards Pittsburgh on Rte. 70?Probably too late but Williamsburg could still be a great, few hour stop on the way to the Outer Banks.
If you are able to stop in Williamsburg you may want to look at Jamestown Settlement and the Living Museum in Newport News. Water Country is great but your children may be a little young to justify the visit. Most of the rides are for adults and older children. There is a nice children's area but it is only a small part of the park. Jamestown Settlement is a re-creation of the Jamestown fort and Indian Village. Easy to walk around and a lot of fun for young children. The VA Living Museum is 1/2 hr away from Wmsbg and not far off the route to the Outer Banks. It has great animal exhibits, activities, and presentations for young kids. You shouldn't have any problem finding a hotel in Williamsburg. Drive down Richmond Rd. and you'll see every chain. There are suites hotels there and on Bypasss just off Richmond Rd. Have a great trip!
